If the water froze instantly, killing them, then why are they all floating on the surface?

// more likely, they died, the bodies floated, and the water froze.

// stupid article tries to make you imagine fish freezing to death mid swim.

kyleaugustus: Here in NJ it was between -10c and -20c for a few days this past week and with plenty of wind.  It was damn cold, colder than the article cites, but our lakes were still only slowly freezing their surfaces.  Some short period of -7.8c isn't going to do this.

The wind helps immensely. With strong enough wind the actual effect of -7,8c can be -20 to -25. Off the coast of Norway wind speeds of 20m/s (about 45-55 mph) is common.

Ice floats
Flash freezes happen

The fish were clearly all floating at the surface before the water froze.
umm.. that 'surface' is possibly only 3 inches above the bottom.
/I'm not saying it was cormorants chasing the fish to the shallows to make preying on them easier (like they do), but...
//i guess it could be Obama's fault...

The norwegian article covering the event says that there is a cement wall in the water further out making the waters where the fish froze stand still. The fish probably got caught in the shallow waters when the tide went out.

The water is only a few inches deep where most of the fish were caught giving the impression of them floating.

More importantly, what the fark is that dog?

/Wait, we're supposed to assume a wind so strong it froze sea water instantly in 20 degree weather......?

Whenever these "fluff" pieces show up in the news, it's always an attempt to district you from what's really going on in the world.  So I implore you all, please ignore the red herring.
