SquiggsIN: FTA: "Besides, its pretty hard to be upset when FOX is investing heavily in a primetime documentary series about space, time and the nature of the universe. "

So long as the Fox News staff has no input this might be a good thing.  "Science according to the average Fox News viewer" could be a comedy show.

Whereas Fox News is very conservative, the other Fox is pretty liberal.  There are a lot of jabs at Fox News from the writers of the Simpsons and other sources.  Plus, look at how ground breaking some Fox shows have been.  Married...With Children was completely crazy by 80s sitcom standards and other shows like it.

The ratings for this show will be atrocious. If I were a betting man I'd say that it won't get past half its episodes before getting cancelled. At least it'll be out on DVD/Bluray quickly enough.

PS: I am actually looking forward to this show.

Oh hells no.  Michio Kaku eclipses Neil DeGrasse Tyson in the self-important, smarmy dick department. I love Bill Nye but he doesn't have enough razzle dazzle for the Fox demographic. Neil suits the project and the demographic perfectly. I am looking forward to it immensely.

While I really LIKE Neal deGrasse Tyson (he's visited my work a number of times and everyone who has encountered him found him polite, funny, and even a little goofy) and enjoy a lot of his talks.... I'm also a huge fan of Cosmos, and it's what got me started in astronomy and my love and passion for cosmology. Sure, some sort of reboot. But when I read "FOX" and "Seth MacFarlane " I can't help but think the show is going to suck. Part of what made Cosmos brilliant was Sagan's absolute and clear love of the topics, which I think Tyson could do as well. But MacFarlane has the brains of a turnip, and if, IF he tries to add a lot of humor to the show, it's going to completely take away from the wonder and beauty.

Also, the original Cosmos wasn't "just" about physics and the stars. It gave history to the subjects and gave a perspective about how we got to where we are with science and understanding. I mean, until Cosmos, I was one of those kids who had been taught Christopher Columbus "discovered" that the world was round (not joking). When I called a teacher on it, she lost her ever loving mind! And this was the early 80s, so it wasn't like I could whip out a cell phone and Google and say "Look, biatch, Eratosthenes in the motherfarkin' house!"

So yeah, some of the people originally responsible for Cosmos were on hand. Yeah, NDT also grew up on Cosmos and also loved the show, so maybe his respect for it will keep it from being "Family Guy In Space".

But I don't hold out a lot of hope. FOX dumbs shiat down. Cosmos didn't dumb down anything, they just explained it well.

So much THIS. I find Kaku to be condescending as well. I really wanted to watch Futurscape until I learned he was a regular "guest". I made it through two episodes.

I didn't grow up with Bill Nye, he was after my generation, I grew up with Mr. Wizard. As an adult, I respect Bill Nye for his accomplishments but as a host he doesn't have the charisma that Neil deGrasse Tyson does to a wide swath of different demographics.

Fox and Fox News tend to keep their content separated. Cosmos on Fox is, as the headline states, for having its viewers counting billions and billions, not to potato.

I was fortunate to hit the sweet spot (born 1983) and grew up with both Mr. Wizard and Bill Nye. As much as I love Bill Nye, he might have the chops and the enthusiasm, but yeah...I don't think he has the stage presence/charisma/whathaveyou to pull off something like the Cosmos reboot. Neil's got it in spades.

He also doesnt have the required technical expertise to be believable. He's a scientist, not a cosmologist. It makes a difference.

As a guy who regularly listens to Star Talk Radio, I can confirm that NDT is pretty damn full of himself, though. A host? What about that Brian Green guy? Or Brian Cox. He seems completely fascinated by that stuff. I kind of want to punch him for being so mealy though.

Justa reminder, Brian Cox has merely figured out how to get the BBC to fund his world jaunting but rather narcissitic vacations.

And the problem with Michio Kaku is his voice. Trust me, his books are better than his TV presence because his voice isn't there.

Except he's an astronaut, not a scientist. Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson at least have a science background and Neil Degrasse Tyson is actually an  astrophysicists like Sagan. So self important dick or not, he's qualified. Chris Hadfield's tenure for science educator is limited to explaining science on ISS. Most of which wasn't that much different from what astronauts in general have been educating the public about from space since Skylab.

The only thing Chris Hadfield was able to do that his fellow astronauts haven't been as successful at is to reach beyond the usual audience of space nerds like me. To be fair to NASA though, Chris Hadfield was more successful for two reasons. 1: His son, which has a better grasp of social media promoted the hell out of him. He even promoted him on Fark. Chris Hadfield has even said explicitly that he didn't see the value of social media before his son made it apparent. 2: The CSA is a smaller organization in general than NASA, MUCH smaller. So when they send an astronaut into space its more noticed than when NASA does it.

In 2011, NASA sent 14 astronauts into space. Canada has sent 9 astronauts into space during its entire history.
