(The Atlantic Cities)   Long after Pizza Hut abandoned their iconic red-hut restaurants, one blogger makes it his life's mission to document all buildings that used to be a Pizza Hut. "They can't really hide from their past"   (theatlanticcities.com) divider line 176

I remember being terribly hungover and driving up and down Mass Ave all mother licking day trying to find the KFC that google insisted was there.  I finally stopped to turnaround in a bank parking lot and noticed the striking resemblance in architecture the bank had to a KFC.  That was the day I realized there was no god.

Just sent that blogger a few google maps links of some of the restaurants that were lost in the great pizza purge of Quebec City.
Well not that great, but basically franchisee who owned them all went under, only one or two were bought by managers.

emersonbiggins: Nickerson Farms, anyone?  You've all seen one somewhere.

My grandfather used to own an old Nickerson Farms.  My mom worked there when she was a kid.  My aunt eventually bought it and tried to run it as a museum/gas station but it was in a weird place that no one ever really stopped at.  Its now a vinyard and winery front and it seems to do pretty well in that roll.

Strip malls deprive us of this timeless experience. Last year I went to a Smashburger and went back recently to the exact same spot to see that it's a Pepperjax now. The only external visual change was the sign.

Also, now that Quizno's is going under, a lot of former franchises are now vacant. Our's was taken over by a local start-up called Mad Ox Bakery and there are still some signs of it's former tenant's presence, like the color schemes of the walls.

Common error you find Google street view making when it thinks it has encountered a license plate or a persons face.

I still see abandoned ones on the old highways next to the interstate, I always thought they were Stuckey's though, or were they called different things in different places?

Okay, I love that one.  Somebody had to make the decision on whether to take down the bucket, or just paint it white.  I can't believe taking it down would have been more costly or time consuming than painting it white, so why wasn't it taken down?  Maybe the dude wanted to slap a banner on it at some point?

Yes, the town. No good place to eat within the concentration camp. I just thought it was amusing that this was the first thing I saw getting off the train at Frauenhoferstrasse; those small pictures on the right are of the concentration camp, so I took this as a corporate endorsement.

So you can't get a pizza fresh from the oven?

/Yes, that is a tasteless joke..

Truly tasteless, now go wash your mouth out with soap.

That joke has also been rendered tasteless...

OMG!!!! Never been but the one located in Picacho Peak AZ had it's roof collapse a few weeks ago. Never made into anything else. When it closed it stayed that way. No one ever tried to do anything with it and time plus vandals took their toll.  It's a sad shadow of it's former self.

The only Pizza Hut within 40 miles that had a buffet closed and was turned into a coffee place. Still mourning it's passing.

And why is every old Taco Bell building in Tucson now a check cashing place????

seancdaug: For many years starting in the 1930s, the Baltimore/Washington area had its own local burger stand called Little Tavern. It was very similar in style to White Castle, with an emphasis on slider-sized burgers ("buy 'em by the bag," the motto went). By the early 1990s, they started to disappear, but old locations are ridiculously easy to spot due to the restaurants' small size (barely more than a shed) and iconic, green-roofed "Tudor house" styling.

Because of the unique architecture, there's really not many things you can repurpose an old "Club LT" into, and the majority have wound up as donut shops, or cheap Chinese restaurants. And a couple of Subways, I think, since apparently you can franchise a Subway into any building with at least two and a half walls.

http://agilitynut.com/eateries/lt.html

Yeah the one in Bethesda was turned into a Chinese place and they painted the roof yellow. The one in Wheaton lasted a while but they tore it down. On the wall next to it they found an ad for the company that had the building next to it before that had been painted on in the 50s. Looked pretty cool I think it was for a paint shop. But they ended up painting hte little tavern on a mural across the street at the metro station.

12349876: Shadow Blasko: Holiday Inn "Holidomes"

That would be a fun challenge now.  Holiday Inn quit branding 1 and 2 story hotels a little while back.

There's one in Lubbock TX. I'd never even heard of such a thing but they had a good deal on a room when I was there visiting family at Thanksgiving.

Pretty empty and old looking though. Doubt it will exist that way much longer.

The Pizza Hut that I can almost spit on from my house is still the "hut" style building.

There's one on interstate 35 in Texas near the Oklahoma border that is now a pr0n store with a huge "XXX" emblazoned on the roof.   It's for the truckers who like to get their jack off on while hauling garbage to put on the shelves of your local Wal Mart.

I've seen that one!  I need to go visit the place some time, just to see if the inside matches the promise of the outside.
