Do you know what I heard from the Tokyo embassy after the big 2011 earthquake?

Nothing. I'm sure statements were released, but it's not like the embassy actually calls you or anything. They release these statements in the US media, only.

That or they wanted me irradiated for some kind of weird international Illuminati style experiment.

The embassy in Bangkok seems to do most of its communication via Twitter and their website.  Its not like they go door to door looking for Americans to warn them.

That said, these protests have been going on since November with little real impact, outside a few small areas in Bangkok.  This isn't the first time they've shut down streets, and the turn out hasn't been as big as expected (they had to delay the shutdown by one week and reduced the number of locations being shut down from 20 to 7).  That said, if the protests lead to another coup, their is a small chance a civil war breaks out.

Yeah, but if it's a CIVIL war, then it will be okay.

A bunch of gents in suits and bowler cups arguing quietly over a few cups of tea in the street? Quickly, shore up the flank with some coffee and tables. The enemy's here and he's got CRULLERS. Oh no, it's Auntie Em and she wants her Tupperware back. Fall back, fall back, excuse me sir, we're falling back. Thank you so much.

Not true, I was in Bangkok two weeks ago. I got several emails from the embassy advising me to take precautions up to and including leaving.

Now I'm almost disappointed.

There is also a email list you can join when you're going to be in foreign countries and the embassy will send stuff directly to you. So there is a way to get notices of weather, civil disturbances, wars, and other major concerns (embassy closed X day for instance).

The french embassy was moar helpfull...

Basically, the message was "get yer ass up to Seoul, we be sending dem rescue planes there, also, bring some books and cushions, the C130 don't have any inboard movie showing, and not much for seats"

Lucky it's not a too long swim from Japan to Worst Korea... Of the South...

You have to sign up for the alerts. I received plenty of them, even "defer travel" notices for areas in Japan where crimes targetting foreigners were escalating.

I live in Bangkok, so I'm really getting a kick...

Yeah, no need to hoard food and stuff. Most of the city is relatively unaffected (the worst effect I've felt from the Shutdown so far is bus traffic was a bit wonky yesterday as many of the buses I use either originate in or have routes through the affected roads) and it's pretty much business as usual. Unless you happen to live in a protest area and have the IQ of a school administrator, getting food is not going to be a problem.

I wonder if they issued similar warnings when the city was flooding a couple years ago. That was a situation where getting supplies in certain areas could be extremely difficult.

This, so far, has been mostly calm.

/don't actually know too many details about the protests, but if you want up to date info, follow @RichardBarrow on Twitter
//get the feeling these are just like the last protests in the sense of many many people knowing that they don't want the current government, but don't really seem to have any idea what they do want or any real plan to solve things
///I may very well be wrong though

Aboard the Thailand Express

Perfumed by a Nepal night

One of my coworkers just left to visit last week and disappeared, no kidding. We are worried about him; he hasn't checked in and no one (not even his family) have heard from him. It was all Hangover 2 jokes the first day, but now 3 days later all the joking has stopped. I had no idea this was happening. I think I probably won't share this link with anyone.

We are a 100% remote outfit. We all work from home or on the road, so this type of travel is typical and expected. He was scheduled as on the clock all three days, and it really isn't like him not to check in. Would be like a your boss no-call/no-showing for 3 days straight; you would start to wonder. We are in the middle of a huge project as well, one that he was instrumental on. Something isn't right.

/guess who got assigned all his tasks
