Or maybe she was trying to pull him out of the way of the gun.  It's amazing the streching you are doing to protect a crazy person with a gun.  He shot a guy for no reason other than because he could.

The arrogance of a GUN NUT, that might makes right, yes.

They were both wrong. When a gun is pointed at your chest it's a good idea to back down. I mean, giving your life for your beliefs is commendable, but in 20 years the kid will only know her father from the pictures and the shooter will be dead. Dad could have walked away or at least had the sensibility to be shot in the back to show he was trying, at least. Then again, he could of just turned his phone off and texted the 3 year old after nap time.

Or you know, crazy ex-cop could not shoot people that text during the previews of a movie. Go ahead and blame the victim though if that makes you feel better.

CSB,
Last movie I went to see in a theatre some kid in the seat in front of me was playing with his phone.  He wasn't texting or anything actually useful he was just sitting there swiping his thumb back and forth on the screen so his homescreen was just going back and forth.  Farking ADHD kids can't even sit and watch a movie for 5 minutes without having to play with their damn phones.

Hollywood wants to get people back to the theaters?  Try building a theater where I can see and hear the movie but I can't see or hear the morons around me.  Then you'll start getting my money again.

CSB following:

Went to see a movie one Friday night (Cloverfield). A fight broke out near where I was sitting over a text message apparently (this was before the movie started). These 2 guys get into it and they're rolling over rows of seats (stadium seating) till they get to the bottom level of seats. They're not hurt, and one chases another out of the theater.

What is it about texts anyway?

At least you saw one good show that day.

The shooter left, then came back.  There is an assumption that he went to complain to management, but as far as I can tell, it's just an assumption.  It's also possible that he went out to his car and got his gun.

I'm also curious is he was legally carrying.  Did he have a concealed weapons permit, or did he just figure "I'm an ex-cop, I can do what I want."?
2014-01-14 12:30:22 PM

To all the people saying "good"...this happened before the movie even started.

Also, a perfect example of why concealed carry is a stupid idea. No, this would not have happened had a gun not been involved. The gun nut would not have stabbed the man to death with a Twizzler.

"Cummings said the man in the back row - later identified as Reeves - got up and left the auditorium, presumably to get a manager. But he came back after a few minutes, without a manager and appearing upset. Moments later, the argument between the two men resumed, and the man in the front row stood up. "

So the douche left to get the manager, manager probably said that it's the previews and he won't do anything about it.  Douche comes back and starts up the fight again, then pulls his gun to and shot the guy because somebody threw popcorn at him.  Death penalty is in order, no life in prison since that wouldn't be long enough.

This altercation started during the previews, probably just after the announcement came on to silence your phones. Dad see's the announcement and decides to text? The old guy says something and instead of apologizing and turning the phone off dad decides to fight the issue, and continues fighting after management was informed?

If this stops just one person from picking up their phone during a movie, the dad did not die in vain. Now, instead of the long "silence your phone" clips before the previews, they can just remind the audience people have been killed texting.

Or, they can just include a movie mode in every phone that shows white on black at reduced brightness. This could be used during movies or the bus, anyplace that annoying white glow from these stupid phones gets on people's nerves. Could save the lives of many boorish, ignorant people.

Here's what I think really happened. No joke. The old man hadn't been to the movies in over a decade. He's also an extreme right-winger who listens to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh on the radio all day, so he's typically in a bad mood about society as a regular part of his normal thinking process.

This morning, Glenn Beck tells him on the radio to go see this particular movie, because it is about our patriot soldiers. So he decides to go for it, then draws an unfortunate seat behind the texter. Drawing on both his history as a retired police officer, and his anger for society, he loses it for a split second, and here we are.

Fark you, Glenn Beck.

The problem is that people don't know how to talk to each other anymore.

CSB:  Went to see a movie quite a while ago and some dumb kid a couple rows in front was texting or browsing on his phone during previews.  I went up to him and asked if he could do me a favor and turn down the brightness on his phone. and maybe hold it a little lower.  And he did exactly that, through the entire movie and it didn't bother me.

A different time, way before that, there was some guy with a Bluetooth headset in his ear and it had a really annoying flashing blue light.  Before the movie started, I went up to him, made sure he wasn't on the phone talking with someone, then pointed out the light was distracting.  He apologized and put it in his pocket.

I think the issue with people now-a-days is that the build up in their head that is someone else annoys them, that it must be personal; that the person knows that their actions are annoying others around them, and they are doing it on purpose.  I'm not saying that there aren't people out there that annoy others on purpose like some real life internet troll.

No it's not. The victim was 43 and the shooter was 71. I'm pretty sure if the old man was coming at him with the weapons you described, the younger guy would be alive today. The gun is the only reason he's dead. Well that and the crazy old man.

- kids in the back who think it's funny to throw popcorn at someone they know who just happens to be sitting near you
- people who bring their noisy toddlers and even babies to the movie with them. Seriously, wtf? I can't believe this is even allowed.

dentalhilljack: Mad_Radhu: This past weekend I ran into the weirdest complaint at a theater. The Hobbit just finished up, and during the credits I stood up and was waiting for my wife to gather up her bag and jacket, because I really needed to stretch out my legs after sitting for three and a half hours. Suddenly, the lady behind me was berating me for being rude and blocking her view of the credits, like it was a terrible thing to stand up after a long movie during a credits sequence that has no extra scenes or any other Easter eggs. I didn't really hear her when she first started complaining, but my wife was about ready to hop over the seats and get into it with her.

The whole thing just seemed weird? Since when was it rude to stand up after a movie if there is nothing in the credits that you can't read on IMDB? It just was so weird it broke my brain a bit to the point where I would have said something if I wasn't totally having a "If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college" type moment.

Her grandson was 2nd unit assistant doughnut delivery team and she was trying to see his name in lights, you insensitive ass......

Well, could mad have taken a step or two to the right or left? I mean, if Iron Man and all other Avengers movies have taught us we better stick around for that last bit of trailer for the new movie or easter egg.

I am not saying that the lady couldn;t handle it better. It IS reasonable to want to make sure you don;t miss anything meant to be seen.

Ehh... if the retired cop had brought out a baton and smashed the phone, I'd agree with you. If he had smashed his hand, I'd still agree with you. If the retired cop had brought back pepper spray or mace or a taser, I'd say that he's getting close to crossing the line.

But when it comes to pulling a gun on someone over texting in a movie theatre, that's three degrees of magnitude above Pure Insanity. It's at a point where you have to be insane to give any sort of justification for it, even in a joking way.

Texting in a theatre is aggravating at worst. In no way, shape or form does it deserve any sort of deadly violence, and even non-deadly violence is an overreaction.

99.998er: Our 16th president died the same way.

Die Hard With a Vengeance taught me that the 21st president was Chester A. Arthur.

If you can't go more than 5 minutes without checking your phone, you really aren't meant to go to the movies. Stay at home and get a Netflix account.

Texting hasn't ever bugged me during movies. I don't know maybe it is because I can control where my eyes look.

Don't try it I'm special...

Do you know what really ruins a movie for me? Gunfire in the audience.

I read in another article that it happened during the previews. Who the hell gets that worked up over the previews...
So, who wants to guess how long until the shooter pulls the "Stand Your Ground" bs?

jaytkay: You gun nuts really need to calm down and stop this nonsense.

And if gun nuts you mean gang banger idiots I agree. We don't know anything about the guy who did this yet but I would bet you a whole $1 he was not carrying that gun legally.

DanZero: Thank you for not picking one of the bazillion stories with a NewsFlash tag.

It's not the text per se, probably.  It's the damn backlighting on the phone distracting you from the movie.  There's a reason they drop the house lights.

I need to know if the shooter or the victim was the texter before passing judgement.
