Thank you for not picking one of the bazillion stories with a NewsFlash tag.

CSB following:

Went to see a movie one Friday night (Cloverfield). A fight broke out near where I was sitting over a text message apparently (this was before the movie started). These 2 guys get into it and they're rolling over rows of seats (stadium seating) till they get to the bottom level of seats. They're not hurt, and one chases another out of the theater.

What is it about texts anyway?

If the movie hasn't started, it's fair game. Besides, some of the "lights on" previews encourage people to complete a survey to get concession coupons, etc.

It's not the text per se, probably.  It's the damn backlighting on the phone distracting you from the movie.  There's a reason they drop the house lights.

It's still distracting to people near you.

CSB,
Last movie I went to see in a theatre some kid in the seat in front of me was playing with his phone.  He wasn't texting or anything actually useful he was just sitting there swiping his thumb back and forth on the screen so his homescreen was just going back and forth.  Farking ADHD kids can't even sit and watch a movie for 5 minutes without having to play with their damn phones.

Hollywood wants to get people back to the theaters?  Try building a theater where I can see and hear the movie but I can't see or hear the morons around me.  Then you'll start getting my money again.

FTFA:  Everybody is paranoid, scared, because a movie theater should be a safe place where people should be able to go out and enjoy themselves. But what America has seen over the last couple of years is that movie theaters have become dangerous places where injuries occur

The owner of this quote probably wasn't alive when New Jack City, Boyz N The Hood, Juice, and Menace II Society came out.  For the record, I thought I was going to die during Boyz N The Hood, but that was part of the fun.  Stupid Millenials and their "no accountability" and "no random violence" and "don't judge me" bullshiat.

I still remember when cell phones first came about...  Right before the feature started they would always show some really awesome, action packed sequence, that SO looked like a real movie - then interupted by that annoying cell phone ring.

Not for nothing, but that really made a point.  Nowadays, they just skip right over that and tell you to just turn the damned thing off!!!

I can see the theater previews already..

1. Friends don't let friends text in theaters.
2. Make it a movie night to remember - not a texting night to forget.
3. Think of your future, Think of your date, Then think before making that fatal mistake, Don't Text and Watch.
4. Live to enjoy the memory. Don't Text and Watch.
5. Create great memories, have lots of fun, and do your best to make your date safe for everyone.
6. Give your story a happy ending that you can remember, Don't Text and Watch!
7. It's choice, not chance, that determines your destiny.
8. U TXT, U WATCH, U LOSE

Holy crap and I frequent that theater to see movies.. Maybe it will serve as a warning for people who love to pull out there phones and text during the film.. The main rule it should be is.. If the lights go down in the theater put your phones away.. I don't have a gun but I will have a large soda that can be thrown at a velocity to mess up peoples clothing and phone devices

Maybe I'm cold hearted.. but I don't pay 20$ to go see a film and text throughout the entire movie

Until 'the right to keep and bear arms' is treated JUST as equally as 'the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness', it appears that the right to shoot will retain supremacy. The Constitution is the foundation of American law. It's the rules and regulations of the USA. The Declaration of Independence is just that; it's a document announcing that the 13 colonies were no longer a part of British rule. It has no legal standing at all though.

Ehh... if the retired cop had brought out a baton and smashed the phone, I'd agree with you. If he had smashed his hand, I'd still agree with you. If the retired cop had brought back pepper spray or mace or a taser, I'd say that he's getting close to crossing the line.

But when it comes to pulling a gun on someone over texting in a movie theatre, that's three degrees of magnitude above Pure Insanity. It's at a point where you have to be insane to give any sort of justification for it, even in a joking way.

Texting in a theatre is aggravating at worst. In no way, shape or form does it deserve any sort of deadly violence, and even non-deadly violence is an overreaction.

he didn't shoot him because he was texting. He shot him because he was a jerk. He got reported to management about the texting and obviously said something to the nice, retired officer and then got shot for that. Perhaps he should have texted 911 while he still had the chance...

That theater does seem to uniquely choke the pole. Every time I go there numerous people seem to have a fixation with updating their Facebook account or some crap throughout the movie. Usually a bunch of bored, pathetic soccer moms lamenting the growth of their arse and their terrible suburban kids.

Hardly anyone ever seems to be working there to complain to. Quoting Chris Rock is indeed appropriate in this case.

I'm pretty sure the guy would be just as dead if he'd had his throat cut with a knife, stabbed with a stiletto, or head bashed in with a billy club.

The weapon is meaningless in this case. One guy killed another guy and he's going to prison for a long time.

No it's not. The victim was 43 and the shooter was 71. I'm pretty sure if the old man was coming at him with the weapons you described, the younger guy would be alive today. The gun is the only reason he's dead. Well that and the crazy old man.

The problem is that people don't know how to talk to each other anymore.

CSB:  Went to see a movie quite a while ago and some dumb kid a couple rows in front was texting or browsing on his phone during previews.  I went up to him and asked if he could do me a favor and turn down the brightness on his phone. and maybe hold it a little lower.  And he did exactly that, through the entire movie and it didn't bother me.

A different time, way before that, there was some guy with a Bluetooth headset in his ear and it had a really annoying flashing blue light.  Before the movie started, I went up to him, made sure he wasn't on the phone talking with someone, then pointed out the light was distracting.  He apologized and put it in his pocket.

I think the issue with people now-a-days is that the build up in their head that is someone else annoys them, that it must be personal; that the person knows that their actions are annoying others around them, and they are doing it on purpose.  I'm not saying that there aren't people out there that annoy others on purpose like some real life internet troll.

Point being, even tho the texter is being painted as the provokie lol it could've been the old fart who was the being the A-hole..

We know exactly enough to know who was being an a-hole.  Texter for texting (and I don't care if it was during the previews, some people like to watch them) and the shooter for shooting after being assaulted with the all so deadly weapon of...popcorn.  One dead and hopefully one to jail...the rest of the world can take a lesson from this (not that I'll be holding my breath).

Here's what I think really happened. No joke. The old man hadn't been to the movies in over a decade. He's also an extreme right-winger who listens to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh on the radio all day, so he's typically in a bad mood about society as a regular part of his normal thinking process.

This morning, Glenn Beck tells him on the radio to go see this particular movie, because it is about our patriot soldiers. So he decides to go for it, then draws an unfortunate seat behind the texter. Drawing on both his history as a retired police officer, and his anger for society, he loses it for a split second, and here we are.

France knows how to do this right. Every movie is posted with two times - one for the previews, and one for the *actual* movie. They bring the house lights up for 90 seconds in between so latecomers can find their seats, and then the show starts.

To answer your questions:
Followup articles indicate that shooter is 70 years old and white. Retired from the police department 20 years ago.
And shootees are 30/40-something married white couple. He did accounting/finance for an ATV/JetSki dealership, she works for an insurance company.

But what it really boils down to is that they were all US citizens, and there is no evidence that they were non compos mentis.

/you could offer me $200k to manage a movie theater, and I'd turn it down

2014-01-14 10:30:08 AM
This altercation started during the previews, probably just after the announcement came on to silence your phones. Dad see's the announcement and decides to text? The old guy says something and instead of apologizing and turning the phone off dad decides to fight the issue, and continues fighting after management was informed?

If this stops just one person from picking up their phone during a movie, the dad did not die in vain. Now, instead of the long "silence your phone" clips before the previews, they can just remind the audience people have been killed texting.

Or, they can just include a movie mode in every phone that shows white on black at reduced brightness. This could be used during movies or the bus, anyplace that annoying white glow from these stupid phones gets on people's nerves. Could save the lives of many boorish, ignorant people.

2014-01-14 10:37:53 AM
This past weekend I ran into the weirdest complaint at a theater. The Hobbit just finished up, and during the credits I stood up and was waiting for my wife to gather up her bag and jacket, because I really needed to stretch out my legs after sitting for three and a half hours. Suddenly, the lady behind me was berating me for being rude and blocking her view of the credits, like it was a terrible thing to stand up after a long movie during a credits sequence that has no extra scenes or any other Easter eggs. I didn't really hear her when she first started complaining, but my wife was about ready to hop over the seats and get into it with her.

The whole thing just seemed weird? Since when was it rude to stand up after a movie if there is nothing in the credits that you can't read on IMDB? It just was so weird it broke my brain a bit to the point where I would have said something if I wasn't totally having a "If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college" type moment.

Does it matter? Dad was still being a prick after a short cool down period. Not saying he deserved to die for being a jerk, but I kind assume he had a history of poor battle picking choices. I noticed his wife didn't step in front of him to protect, but had her hand on his chest - more likely to hold him back.  If she was holding him back, maybe he was the aggressive one. He didn't die from texting, arrogance killed him.

They were both wrong. When a gun is pointed at your chest it's a good idea to back down. I mean, giving your life for your beliefs is commendable, but in 20 years the kid will only know her father from the pictures and the shooter will be dead. Dad could have walked away or at least had the sensibility to be shot in the back to show he was trying, at least. Then again, he could of just turned his phone off and texted the 3 year old after nap time.

"Cummings said the man in the back row - later identified as Reeves - got up and left the auditorium, presumably to get a manager. But he came back after a few minutes, without a manager and appearing upset. Moments later, the argument between the two men resumed, and the man in the front row stood up. "

So the douche left to get the manager, manager probably said that it's the previews and he won't do anything about it.  Douche comes back and starts up the fight again, then pulls his gun to and shot the guy because somebody threw popcorn at him.  Death penalty is in order, no life in prison since that wouldn't be long enough.

Mad_Radhu: This past weekend I ran into the weirdest complaint at a theater.

Her grandson was 2nd unit assistant doughnut delivery team and she was trying to see his name in lights, you insensitive ass......

Well, could mad have taken a step or two to the right or left? I mean, if Iron Man and all other Avengers movies have taught us we better stick around for that last bit of trailer for the new movie or easter egg.

I am not saying that the lady couldn;t handle it better. It IS reasonable to want to make sure you don;t miss anything meant to be seen.

Ficoce: I noticed his wife didn't step in front of him to protect, but had her hand on his chest - more likely to hold him back. If she was holding him back, maybe he was the aggressive one. He didn't die from texting, arrogance killed him.

Or maybe she was trying to pull him out of the way of the gun.  It's amazing the streching you are doing to protect a crazy person with a gun.  He shot a guy for no reason other than because he could.

To all the people saying "good"...this happened before the movie even started.

Also, a perfect example of why concealed carry is a stupid idea. No, this would not have happened had a gun not been involved. The gun nut would not have stabbed the man to death with a Twizzler.

Get your wallet out, the shooter was a retired cop. Sorry to shoot a hole in your gang banger theory...

Just another piece of evidence showing that the carrying of firearms should be restricted to law enforcement, active and retired.

He was retired LE

Techhell: IRQ12: dascott: At first I was like "well, finally" but then I was like "wait, during the PREVIEWS?"  Florida, sigh.

The movie has started when the previews are showing.  Some people are interested in them and they run after the showtime starts.

While what happened in the article is pure insanity it could have been avoided with the slightest amount of common courtesy for those around you.  Especially if you continue you text after someone has expressed it bothers them.

Ehh... if the retired cop had brought out a baton and smashed the phone, I'd agree with you.

The douchebag was not shot because he was texting. He was shot because he assaulted the former officer, and caused him to fear for his safety. The officer was just standing his ground. Should be an easy acquittal.

Jeez, it's kinda hard to enjoy a movie while people with a flashlight are milling around. A movie is supposed to be an immersive experience, and something like this completely ruins that experience.

And, in fact, I no longer go to theaters for just this reason. There are just too many inconsiderate douchebags out there.

I am saying that if you think it is easy getting 3 "Frozen" age kids (much less 6) ANYWHERE on time, then you're incorrect. Now I can certainly hear the idea of "why take the 6 kids if you can;t handle them?" argument. It's legit. I just know that every time people complain about folks who have phones on EVER in the theatre come off as that middle aged busy body who is constantly looking out her window just LOOKING for something to be annoyed with in their neighborhood. "THE GRASS IS TO HIGH! YOU BLIND ME WITH YOUR CELL PHONE LIGHT EVILDOER! HAVEATCHU!"

I am not saying it couldn;t be annoying. I am saying that people give WAAAAAAY to much of a shiat nowadays.

You sound like you hate people. Which, actually, I can totally relate to. Sounds to me like your best bet is to invest in an awesome home theatre setup and watch the movies in piece. Or at the very least, go to the theatre on a day showing 6 weeks into it's run.

Let me guess it took them maybe 20sec to get seated.... OMG THE OUTRAGE!!  Even if it took 1 minute to get seated then that movie is 108 minutes so it's less than 1% of the movie.  Deal with it.

Why are you staring at people instead of the screen.
Pick a better theater and this won't happen
OMG how can you cope they have the nerve to ::gasp:: talk I bet it wasn't more than a few sec.
Kids are stupid go during the school day
We are talking about a kids movie...... guess what toddlers will be there and sometimes they don't want to watch but I'll be damned if I didn't pay $30+ to walk out

The shooter left, then came back.  There is an assumption that he went to complain to management, but as far as I can tell, it's just an assumption.  It's also possible that he went out to his car and got his gun.

I'm also curious is he was legally carrying.  Did he have a concealed weapons permit, or did he just figure "I'm an ex-cop, I can do what I want."?

They were both wrong. When a gun is pointed at your chest it's a good idea to back down. I mean, giving your life for your beliefs is commendable, but in 20 years the kid will only know her father from the pictures and the shooter will be dead. Dad could have walked away or at least had the sensibility to be shot in the back to show he was trying, at least. Then again, he could of just turned his phone off and texted the 3 year old after nap time.

Once the gun was pulled it was too late.

The trivia stuff is the worst. Especially the 'quizzes'. Either hopelessly obscure or obvious to an 8-year-old.

The one I hate now is the ad before the ad that shows you all the top notch talent that was brought together and all the hard work that went into the shiatty ad you are about to watch. Microsoft is the WORST about this, with the Surface and Xbox One ads as two from recent memory. I don't care about the credentials of your choreographer, all kinds of cool people dancing around doesn't make me want to buy your tablet, you need a more personal story about what the actual device does like what Google does with their short, simple, and sweet Nexus ad about the kid trying to get home because of a family emergency or something like that.

Nope, sorry, don't feel sorry for him.

I feel sorry for the retired cop. What he did was incredibly stupid, but I do understand.
At a certain point, enough is enough. Reminds me of the movie Falling Down.

(By the way, some reports say the texting continued into the movie. I don't see the huge
distinction, really. Some people do like to watch the previews, and just because you
don't doesn't mean you get to spoil it for everyone else.)

Well, let's see...
- dude was described by those nearby as 'noisily' texting (probably talking to wife)
- dude refused to stop
- dude was verbally abusive after the former officer returned from the lobby
- dude threw his bag of popcorn at the older gentleman

Nope, sorry, don't feel sorry for him.

You're a dick, and even the police have said he was shot during the previews. And if you think Falling Down is some sort of hero's story, you missed the point of that movie entirely.
