Police and fire officials in San Jose, California, are asking for the public's help to find the person responsible for setting roughly a dozen fires in the downtown area.

Should be easy to find.

LA is a great big freewaaaay, put a hundred down and buy a car!  In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star! Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass.  And all the stars that never were, are parking cars and pumping gas.

As a victim of a serial arsonist, I'm not really getting a kick.  Cops didn't give a crap about me (I was victim #1 out of 10+) until about the 5th or 6th fire.  THEN, they came knocking and asking me a bunch of questions and acting all sympathetic.

Yea - and it's O-town, yo, not Oakland.  You just take 880 south from O-town, past the Dumbarton bridge - or, as we locals call it - the Dumbarty-Diddley-Deedlerooney.

My husband is a firefighter with San Jose and this arsonist is getting on their last nerve. In addition to all of the regular calls that SJFD has to respond to (medicals, car accidents, smoke checks) and all of the daily work they need to get done on shift (engine/truck maintenance, refilling/restocking supplies, visiting businesses to ensure they are current with fire codes), they are now being taxed with the addition of this idiot's pyrotechnic tendencies. My husband worked a 48-hour shift (8am Friday to 8am Sunday) and got four hours of sleep in two days. Believe me, the public agencies in San Jose are up in arms over this guy.

In addition, California is coming close to drought conditions thanks to the lack of rain in the past six months, and the fire department is streaming hundreds of thousands of gallons of fresh water onto the fires that are being set. At the warehouse fire--I think it was one of the first ones that was set--my husband's engine was one of six that was on scene and trying to bring the fire under control. Their engine gauges showed that they were streaming 1200 gal/minute--and there were five other engines there doing the same thing, fighting the fire for almost three hours.

Do the math--this guy's not only messing with people's sense of safety, but also with property, exhausted public service workers and the water supply to San Jose and the surrounding areas. If and when there is an injury or death resulting from his actions, I hope he's prosecuted from here until Christmas.

Decades ago, where I grew up, we had a serial arsonist*. She set fires in the glove compartments of cars.

The punchline? It turned out she was the fire chief's daughter.

* Actually, all things considered, we had lots of them. Devil's Night started around here. The city used to burn every year on the night before Halloween, but this chick did her thing year round.

Makes sense.  The preacher's daughter is usually the biggest slut in town.

There were a bunch of arson fires set in the town I grew up in. In every case I remember (three total), the fire destroyed an old dilapidated building which was then sold promptly to real estate developers who put extremely pricey homes in. True fact.

I thought that the massive warehouse fire was not believed to be connected?

That seems kind of low.  The apartments across the way are going for $5K for a 1 BR and $8K for a 2 BR.

/Seriously, double the housing stock, fix some of the really screwed-up highway off-ramps, get serious about mass transit from East Bay to SJ and the Valley, and you won't have these crazy prices.
