Punk made its way through the iron curtain (underground, obviously) before its downfall. It's playing a more public role there now (pussy riot, obviously). Whether overtly political in content or not, punk has been playing this kind of role before it had a definition and its more modern, narrower connotation.

Well...beats the whole Killing Fields scene from the 80's.  That was a real downer and you never hear any of that music anywhere.

I grew up loving Dead Kennedys, but now whenever I hear the phrase Holiday In Cambodia I think of:

Is it hardcore, or is it punk, Subposeur?

2014-01-13 12:45:18 PM
This is surprising in the slightest? Punk's mainstream popularity may come and go but the bands and the scene haven't gone anywhere over the past 40+ years since the first protopunk bands hit the stages in the UK/US. It is global and every urban center around the world has pile of angry misfits rallying around the "punk" banner. The shiattier the country/area the more hardcore the scenes will be. The reason? Because youthful angst and anger at the systems that control us all will always be there and although there are some epic musical talents within the movement no talent is required to be accepted. Also due to the DIY methods of promotion, production and distribution the entire genre has been forced to develop since the early days the web that has been created amongst these global communities would make the most intuitive and influential record execs and club promoters seem like rank amateurs at their "jobs"... AND it is almost ALL done by young kids who's only experience is knowing how to work a photocopy machine/tape deck/and more recently computers.

You can go to almost any medium sized town (not even city) in the world and find punks.

Love 'em or hate 'em they just aren't going anywhere and at this point are probably the most enduring musical scene the modern world has ever witnessed.

Nah I think he just likes "kathooeys". NTTAWWT.

I'm pretty sure any country where it's legal to be in a punk or metal band... has punk and metal bands. Some where it's illegal too.

I've been watching a lot of great docs on the youtubes about the early days (many created while it was all happening) and personally much of it is extremely frightening to me but those kids sure as f*ck weren't boring. It isn't surprising many of the pioneers didn't survive but damned if their legacy hasn't.

Some people say the young kids today are pussies by comparison but I personally think they learned the lessons of those early dudes which has kept the scene from burning out like others before and after have. Punks are crazy and sometimes self destructive but overall they seem to be far more intelligent than the average schlub and through natural selection survived where others have failed miserably.
