Nope, not gonna explain what it is I believe or how you are disagreeing, nor will I provide any backup for my non-assertions.  That would just start up the PR machine, and I'm way too smart for you guys.  The data to support my assertions, whatever they might be, is out there.  Study it out.

spongeboob: MJMaloney187: brantgoose: Dumbass.

John Galt was a super-rich facist superman who went on strike against the tax man in the wet-dream fantasy of a White Russian harlot.

Not that you would know because you obviously didn't read the book, but John Galt was a laborer for the Taggart Transcontinental railroad company. He invented an engine that ran on atmospheric static electricity, then abandoned it. He was not a billionaire and he certainly wasn't a "facist-superman".

In the end, it was the looter class that captured him and were getting ready to torture him for the engine. He escaped. (spoiler alert).

Sure you read the book
The novel unfolds in a progressive retrospective, with Galt, the son of an Ohio garage mechanic, leaving home at age twelve and beginning college at the fictional Patrick Henry University at age sixteen. There he meets Francisco d'Anconia and Ragnar Danneskjöld, who become his two closest friends. Galt takes a double major in physics and philosophy, and after graduating, he becomes an engineer at the Twentieth Century Motor Company, where he designs a revolutionary new motor powered by ambient static electricity. When the company owners decide to run the factory by the collectivist maxim, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need", Galt refuses to work there any longer and abandons his motor.

Just to be clear, there's nothing that MJMaloney187 said that was technically wrong, although he didn't word it correctly. John Galt WAS working for Taggart Transcontinent in the book, under a psuedonym (He had many close conversations in the cafeteria with Eddie Willers). He did it to stay close to Dagny, whom he had a crush on and was stalking throughout the entire novel. And they of course fall in love because Ayn Rand doesn't understand human psychology at all.

And yes, he invented a fantasy engine (while working for the 20th Century Motor Company) that uses science fiction physics to work and is so far advanced beyond anything anyone has ever done before that no one on the entire planet has the intelligence or the skill to duplicate or reverse-engineer his genius, even when they have a working copy of the engine and the motherfarking blueprints for its construction that just happened to be lying around in an abandoned factory. Because he's just that super brilliant, gosh darnit.

John Galt was a warm and gentle voice of reason in a time of great madness.  He coined the phrase "Make love, not war."  While other people were chanting "Burn baby burn," he was talking about love and peace and understanding.  I cherish each and every one of his books and I wish he'd written more.  And I think that if you had experienced even a little bit of the sixties, you might feel the same way too.

Who would have thought that over 30 years of policies designed to decrease workers wages and benefits and maximize investor and executive profits would have a negative effect on the workforce?

For many years growing up, I remember hearing comments like "Of course everything is made in (Japan/China/Taiwan), those people work for rice and fish heads!" . If the GOP can successfully destroy all of the social safety nets, eventually Americans will take any job at any wage. Then cheap manufacturing will come back here and people in Asia will say it's because Americans will work for pork rinds and fries.

Because Melville and Hugo aren't terrible writers for one thing, and none of their works simplified a complex network of economic theories, ideas, practices and human motives and constructed a mono-dimensional faux-reality as a vehicle to push their pulp then filled it full of cardboard cutout characters and mary sue ubermensches who don't talk but lecture for tedious pages about why the rich and powerful have divine right to being rich and powerful, and then have things play out exactly the way their philosophy says it will because they're the authors and they control the farking outcome. The unemployed who have stopped looking for work aren't exactly John Galt. John Galt was a super-rich facist superman who went on strike against the tax man in the wet-dream fantasy of a White Russian harlot.

Also, where does that 92 million figure come from? Did he find it between his buttocks?

4% of the population of the USA is 0.04 x 316=12.64 million, about the number of undocumented workers according to Conservative sources. That's roughly the gap that the chart shows. 92 million? That must be every adult who isn't looking for work including retirees and stay-at-home moms, and yes, John Galt.

What a dumbass.

My guess is that if a real-life John Galt went on strike, nobody would notice him not doing whatever the hell it is he does. One, it is not billionaires who make jobs. Jobs are made by small and medum sized businesses--real entrepreneurs, not bankers, hedge funders, speculators, kleptocrats, vultures, etc.

The big money does not make jobs. The big money destroys jobs to pump up their bottom lines, to pay a dividend, and to make themselves look good with shareholders who don't know or care about the real world or Main Street, but only dividends or share prices.

This guy has less of a grip on reality than Ayn Rand's most pizza-faced teenage acolyte.

Bugger John Galt and the ass he rode in on. Which in his case is named Roger L. Simon.

John Galt wasn't super rich. He was an assistant when he started the strike. Some of the other strikers were super rich, but many weren't. I am sure that if men like Bill Gates and other industrialists said fine, I will quit doing what you say I do that is evil, it wouldn't mess anything up. Rand was right, the world needs these people. If you actually read the book, these men knew they needed the best and brightest employees as well. That was the whole point. Acheivement and hard work are a reward of their own.

Simon.
