BMFPitt: rebelyell2006: America does not have socialized medicine.

We have one of the most expensive socialized healthcare systems in the world.  Two, actually.  Is just that ours only cover a small fraction of the population.

How is it silly?  Our culture looks more and like feudalism every day with "corporate executives" taking the place of royalty.

That hasn't changed since the founding of the country. Our first president came from landed Virginian aristocracy.

You need to go back and read your history again (or maybe a more objective book).  The last thing that the founding fathers wanted was rule by who is richest.  They were scared shiatless that someone with more money than them was going to come in and tell them what to do.

Blaming "libs" doesn't cut it here.  "Liberals" are kissing corporate ass, but the conservatives are doing the same thing and are proud of it.  Our lobbyist and corporate campaign systems are drowning out any normal person's voice no matter what party you are talking about.

Nope, not gonna explain what it is I believe or how you are disagreeing, nor will I provide any backup for my non-assertions.  That would just start up the PR machine, and I'm way too smart for you guys.  The data to support my assertions, whatever they might be, is out there.  Study it out.

I'm not sure that I would agree with that. They weren't scared of the wealthy landowners/merchants/patrician families controling local, state and federal governments, because they were the wealthiest. And they did control it all. They were afraid of foreign wealth being injected into politics, but the same families running local politics in the late 1600s continued in the 1800s.

Convo? You've basically just said that America is 'sinking', used the term 'libtards', and called the ACA socialized medicine. That's not a conversation, that's a bunch of right-wing nonsense... but you claim not to hate the ACA and that you want Fark libs to be better libs... again without explaining what that is supposed to mean.

Goddamn sleeper trolls.

Once again, an old account not seen in years suddenly pops up and starts posting all over the joint, making inflammatory right wing comments.  Again.  It's almost like it's a pattern often seen here on Fark.

A paranoid feller might think Fark admins and mods were using dormant accounts to flame up arguments and boost post counts and pageviews, but a rational feller would know that Fark admins and mods would never stoop to such a thing, no sir.

Yes. They're everywhere and you'd see them if you weren't so blind. But don't look toward the author or any of his friends and family; they're all successful entrepreneurs who don't need anyone's help.

brantgoose: My guess is that if a real-life John Galt went on strike, nobody would notice him not doing whatever the hell it is he does. One, it is not billionaires who make jobs. Jobs are made by small and medum sized businesses--real entrepreneurs, not bankers, hedge funders, speculators, kleptocrats, vultures, etc.

Interestingly, Galt was supposed to be an engineer ("and philosopher" *eyeroll*) so his inventions *would* create things and be missed, but no one would notice him "not doing anything" because technological advancement doesn't have a dependable or plottable "track" like production on an assembly line does.  But the bigger problem is he was Superman.  John Galt and his merry band of inventors weren't just smart techs, the things they were creating were the trappings of a post-scarcity society, a world where supply is infinite and traditional supply and demand cannot exist.  And he did this on his lonesome, which doesn't work in the real world, because he was just better in every possible way.

John Galt was inherently an inhuman being, and the ethical positions regarding him were likewise outside of humanity.

The big money does not make jobs. The big money destroys jobs to pump up their bottom lines, to pay a dividend, and to make themselves look good with shareholders who don't know or care about the real world or Main Street, but only dividends or share prices.

An oversimplification, but still mostly accurate.  Here:

i75.photobucket.com

Now think for a minute, Human behavior is economic behavior, ALL human behavior.  Think back to the time before we had the word "economics", we still had property, we still had power, we still had money even if it was measured in beaver pelts.  And just because something is illegal or without laws does not mean it is not "economic" in nature.  When someone exploits the Wide-screen television resource that is available in your living room and trades it to a drug dealer for a desired commodity which he may choose to consume or re-sell, he is actually just practicing TRULY free-market economics.

He's also stealing your TV and selling it for smack, but that doesn't sound very pseudoscientific.

And when someone swore allegiance to his chief, to fight and die at his command, or when someone trades their physical labor for the spiritual currency of whatever religion they believe in that too can be described in economic terms.

And to bring it around, the kings and warlords and slavemasters of old, who owned monopolies on land, military force, and even people did not descend from on high by the will of the gods, they were just successful, better-than-average Galtic Alphas who rose above the common masses, gained ownership of everything they could by whatever means they could, and passed their properties on to their descendants.

And the only difference between the law that says the king owns you as a serf and the law that says the CEO owns everything EXCEPT you is that the king was more likely to care about your health and well-being.  Either way they still decide if you have dinner or starve.

Except they are not, the source has already been discredited, the U6 is well-known to be going down, and the folk not covered by the U6 are either retired or dead, so their involvement or lack thereof needs some brand of explanation as to why it counts.

Are you saying all those retirees are going to be a problem in the country?

Libs are engaging the dichotomy

This term is too vague to have any meaning, since you are labeling the "libtards" and telling us what "they" think why don't you explain what "The Dichotomy" is instead of just saying those words?  What dichotomy?
rather than fixing or discussing the issue

"
The issue" being...unemployment?  Well "The Libs" have already engaged that problem with limited success, the Republicans are countering by repeatedly sabotaging recovery efforts and lying about any successes.

Lol, you just introduced socialized health care, 60 years after every other 1st world country...and I'm behind the times?! .... Nice

America does not have socialized medicine. But you did not address my post.

Too address your post, yes, America is a sinking ship

Explain yourself.

Huh? So you can start the PR machine? ...can read the data, bro?

No. I just want to know what makes your head tick, why you hold such a silly belief.

You don't even know my belief...

You said it yourself, "America is a sinking ship". Why do you hold such a silly belief?

To be as sincere as possible; I'm looking at the data, people are dropping out; Libs are engaging the dichotomy rather than fixing or discussing the issue

So you have silly beliefs and you are making nonsensical statements. Did you have a stroke? I am fairly certain we are discussing an issue in this thread, but perhaps not the issue that you are wanting to discuss. What issue are you specifically talking about?

you are repeating yourself

Well, I have to ask the same questions multiple times because you won't answer them. Why are you avoiding the conversation?

I answered the question sincerely; I was reprimanded for speaking gobbley-gook; I'm telling you that unless I'm a libertarian or a right-wing nutjob, you are at a loss for an answer

Only because you won't provide one. Stop avoiding the conversation.

spongeboob: MJMaloney187: brantgoose: Dumbass.

John Galt was a super-rich facist superman who went on strike against the tax man in the wet-dream fantasy of a White Russian harlot.

Not that you would know because you obviously didn't read the book, but John Galt was a laborer for the Taggart Transcontinental railroad company. He invented an engine that ran on atmospheric static electricity, then abandoned it. He was not a billionaire and he certainly wasn't a "facist-superman".

In the end, it was the looter class that captured him and were getting ready to torture him for the engine. He escaped. (spoiler alert).

Sure you read the book
The novel unfolds in a progressive retrospective, with Galt, the son of an Ohio garage mechanic, leaving home at age twelve and beginning college at the fictional Patrick Henry University at age sixteen. There he meets Francisco d'Anconia and Ragnar Danneskjöld, who become his two closest friends. Galt takes a double major in physics and philosophy, and after graduating, he becomes an engineer at the Twentieth Century Motor Company, where he designs a revolutionary new motor powered by ambient static electricity. When the company owners decide to run the factory by the collectivist maxim, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need", Galt refuses to work there any longer and abandons his motor.

Just to be clear, there's nothing that MJMaloney187 said that was technically wrong, although he didn't word it correctly. John Galt WAS working for Taggart Transcontinent in the book, under a psuedonym (He had many close conversations in the cafeteria with Eddie Willers). He did it to stay close to Dagny, whom he had a crush on and was stalking throughout the entire novel. And they of course fall in love because Ayn Rand doesn't understand human psychology at all.

And yes, he invented a fantasy engine (while working for the 20th Century Motor Company) that uses science fiction physics to work and is so far advanced beyond anything anyone has ever done before that no one on the entire planet has the intelligence or the skill to duplicate or reverse-engineer his genius, even when they have a working copy of the engine and the motherfarking blueprints for its construction that just happened to be lying around in an abandoned factory. Because he's just that super brilliant, gosh darnit.

/read the whole book while sitting on the can

Are you saying all those retirees are going to be a problem in the country?

Libs are engaging the dichotomy

This term is too vague to have any meaning, since you are labeling the "libtards" and telling us what "they" think why don't you explain what "The Dichotomy" is instead of just saying those words?  What dichotomy?

John Galt was a warm and gentle voice of reason in a time of great madness.  He coined the phrase "Make love, not war."  While other people were chanting "Burn baby burn," he was talking about love and peace and understanding.  I cherish each and every one of his books and I wish he'd written more.  And I think that if you had experienced even a little bit of the sixties, you might feel the same way too.
