Her has a really goofy and weird concept on paper, but it's an amazing modern sci-fi movie. The whole "I'm dating Siri" thing is just a jumping off point for bigger issues that the movie explores, and I hope it finds an audience on Blu-ray/streaming/whatever.

Lone Survivor was good, but it just didn't stick with me.

I believe that Her is being shown on a far smaller number of screens as they know it doesn't have the popcorn mass appeal that an uncomplicated war film does, thus it's only natural that a month after debuting it wouldn't take in $30+ million.

DamnYankees: Her?

Yup....A Spike Lee Jonze joint. Great word-of-mouth, though the box office numbers don't necessarily reflect that.

And BTW, if you're thinking about seeing Grudge Match before it finally departs from theaters, don't.

I saw August Osage County. It sucked. I don't care how well acted it is, the film is like a soap opera. Just one shocking revelation after another. It got tedious.

I also saw Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. It sucked.

Then I saw Hercules, to further torture myself. If sucked so bad that it was funny. The Cinema Snob was spot on when he said it's like an Asylum movie that somehow got a theatrical release.

Yes, friends, January is a bad time for movies.

Congrats. Looks like you either see movies you'd hate on purpose or seek out being pissed.
Maybe you should just stop going to movies. I mean, WTH sees a Meryl Streep movie then Paranormal Activity?
Did you have coupons?

That said, I know a couple that saw Her and walked out in the middle. They like Sci-fi but just didn't see it going anywhere.
I just want to get the audio so my phone can start talking with Scarlet's voice.

I finally saw 47 Ronin myself. It wasn't TERRIBLE, and it was entertaining. That's all I want from a movie.

I have to see everything that comes out for my job. I only saw Paranormal Activity a week late because of recent snow storms, and my boss let me off the hook for it.

Anyway, I was excited to see other movies that came out recently (American Hustle, and Wolf of Wall Street, for example), and enjoyed them. There have also been some pleasant surprises lately, as well (Saving Mr. Banks, The Hobbit 2). Hell, even 47 Ronin wasn't as bad as everyone's saying.

So, no. I don't see bad movies on purpose just so I can hate them. I see everything.

'Her' has a really great story in it.  It manages to touch upon our fixation with technology and how we're perpetually trying to humanize it, it touches upon our tendency to cling to misery and not let go of the past even when not doing so is insane...

It even touches upon the transitory nature of everything, both good and bad, and how that's what makes life worth living.

I'd recommend it over just about everything that came out in 2013.

I'd heard that it's garnered near-universal praise from moviegoers and critics, even drawing favorable comparisons to gems like Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line-which is, frankly, incredible for a Mark Wahlberg pic. I plan on catching it this week to see if it lives up to the hype.

It's okay.  Not near "the best war film since Saving Private Ryan" or whatever Simmons' gushing review was.  A hagiography in certain areas.

Yeah, Lone Survivor is surprisingly brutal and tragic but since it focuses on the individuals and their dedication to each other, it successfully avoids the stigma of being an "anti-war" movie. And it also dares to suggest that killing Americans isn't the goal of every Mooslim on the planet.    I'd much rather Berg spend his time directing movies like Lone Survivor and The Kingdom instead of tripe like Battleship.

As for Her - there's a special kind of sad I get from watching Spike Jonze movies.  He has a way of depicting loneliness and loss that no other director can match.  All his movies are great at that, and that's why I've never wanted to see any of them again.

Yeah, other guys have made comparisons to Gibson's movie, lol, like the guy on Ebert's site now.

I saw someone else say it's as much torture porn as the criticized Saw sequels were, but since it's wrapped in the flag, it's getting a pass. Can't find it now.

Hercules. Currently at 2% on RT.

Look, I'm not one for tearing creative people down, but how the fark has Renny Harlin managed to keep his career going ? Who keeps giving him money? Where is this meeting taking place where people agree to bankroll him?

Harlin is one of the most consistently bad/unprofitable directors out there. Frankly, I'm impressed with the guy's survival instincts because he's managed to weather storms in his career that would have sunk weaker people.

Cutthroat Island is still regarded as one of the greatest cinematic bombs of all time, yet here's Harlin still cranking out wide release films 20 years later. It's astonishing.

It's really not that brutal. A few cringeworthy scenes but nothing like the on-site artery clamp scene from Blackhawk Down.

It's an entertaining film, though.

They get shot up quite a bit, they have to throw themselves off of rocky mountains breaking bones on the way down. I was exaggerating a bit with the Passion comparison. No torture capture though.

Lone Survivor is a great story but it's a pretty ordinary movie. It's not even close to Saving Private Ryan.

There's some real head scratching scenes. It makes you wonder about if it really happened that way, and if it did, holy fark it's a miracle more soldiers didn't die.

I'm a fat bastard sitting at home and the closest military training I have is some Command and Conquer and CoD. But it seems to me that decisions of who goes out a Chinook first and what the assignments are are best discussed on the ride there at the latest and not standing in the hatch hovering over hostile terrain.

As for Her, the premise is so god damned pathetic, Guy falls in love with his phone? sure it sounds like Scarlett Johansson but it's not as if you can motorboat an iphone.
