(Huffington Post)   I know this is going to come as a major surprise, so you might want to sit down first. Okay, so it turns out that Michelle Bachmann apparently botched some key poverty stats. I know, amazing. Shocking, just shocking ... and so unexpected   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 64

She just unskewed your facts lubulardos

She's normally so thorough with the facts.

How out of character for her.

I'm going to enjoy watching the GOP try to own the poverty discussions these mid-terms and headed into '16.

2014-01-12 10:20:31 AM
Well, your first mistake was taking her word for anything.

"The poverty rate is lower now than it was in 1964... The HPV vaccine makes you retarded... My husband is a straight man..." See? She just can't be trusted.

yeah why bother to fact check her. a simple: "look who it is, she's nuts" would do just fine.

2014-01-12 10:24:08 AM
Well, someone told her numbers were Arabic in origin, so she's just trying to keep those shifty terroristy integers off balance. Jeeze, she's trying to protect us all and you folks attack her.

2014-01-12 10:26:09 AM
I'm shocked that she doesn't wear a tinfoil hat

I heard if you listen to Bachmann for longer than three seconds, it makes you retarded. That's what a lady I just met said, and she would never lie to me.

I heard that Michelle Bachmann got stopped for buzzed driving.......BENGHAZI and IRS tax scandal!

Easy solution to the war on poverty: Every adult American citizen gets $25k a year for life. In exchange, we can eliminate most forms of welfare. You want to make more than $25k a year? Get a job. Could even phase out social security with this system, if we wanted.

/Yes, it will never, ever happen in America because socialism is scary.

That's going to be the fun part. That and trying to explain how taking money out of the pockets of the poors by raising their taxes is helping keep them out of poverty.

Oh, much fun will be had.

She didn't botch them, she lied.

But that doesn't really matter, she only lies to us because she loves America so very much that she'll do anything to protect us from the libs who are trying to destroy us and turn this once great country into a socialist hell hole.

Bachmann is a huge idiot who shouldn't be running an elementary school PTA but I did not see a huge lie or huge idiocy.

Poverty rate was 19%, now it's 15%. She's characterized that as not much of a change. Well, that's more of a glass half full/half empty kind of argument. If the current rate were something like 5% then I'd be glad to laugh and point.

Her other argument was that the 4% change cost 90 trillion. The linked article gets all wonky on this in terms of what is supposedly "in" the definitions of poverty and anti-poverty program costs and what is "out." Again, this seems like more of a nuanced type of argument. The article says that experts are now toying with various other ways to define poverty and anti-poverty program costs. Again, I don't see a smoking gun here but more of a you say tomato, I say tomahto.

Note: not defending M.B. but this looks more like M.B. derangement syndrome.

There's still plenty of poverty and it costs money to fix it. I consider that money well spent and welcome evidenced based methods to improve outcomes for less cost.

Some kind of negative income tax or guaranteed minimum income would be so much more efficient than our present byzantine entitlement system at patching the holes in feudal America. I agree though it will never happen.

It doesn't have to be factually correct, it just needs to feel correct.

It is entirely wrong to use a dollar figure that includes many things not intended to have an impact on the poverty rate as it is calculated by the census bureau in an argument that what we have spent has had only a small impact on poverty.

I'll allow that maybe she didn't lie, per se, but the only other explanation is that she is far too stupid to understand the nuance.

Michelle Bachmann is part of the tea party fringe and is not seeking re-election so this is her final year in Congress.  So why does anyone care about what she has to say?

The GOP voters don't give a shiat about facts, especially when you just "feel" something is right.

Basically, she conflated two different arguments. She used a poverty measurement based on only certain programs, than included in the cost other programs that aren't specifically about poverty. Changing how we measure poverty so that the impact of those programs is included means we spent ~20 trillion dropping poverty from 25% to 16%. That's a ten percentage point drop.
