Brady didn't even need to throw a TD.

2014-01-12 12:28:52 AM
There was a small window where Shaughnessy could have been wrong. I think it was 29-22 and I was happy that Luck had spotted the Pats an early TD off an interception.

2014-01-12 12:29:12 AM
It was a good and close game until Luck started throwing those interceptions.  The worst part of all this is the Pats fans saying they're going to the Super Bowl when they still have to take care of the Broncos.  Granted my sampling size is pretty small.  I know we Hawks fans can be pretty insufferable sometimes, but while again the sampling size of my immediate circle of friends is comparatively small, we're at least still suspiciously optimistic of playing the Panthers or 9ers.

Thanks to playing in the worst division in football, the Patriots again enjoy the benefits of a first round bye and home field advantage.

Troy McClure: Thanks to playing in the worst division in football, the Patriots again enjoy the benefits of a first round bye and home field advantage.

Well, there was a team from the worst division in the AFC in that game, but it wasn't the Patriots.  The AFC as a whole is pretty weak, and the AFC East might have been the second best division in the AFC this year.

The Jets and Dolphins are not worse than the Texans, Titans and Jaguars.

And also the Patriots have to play the first place team in every AFC division every year.

The AFC West was definitely the best division this year.

That's an interesting proposal, but I'd contend the Cardinals are better than the Chargers and the Rams are better than the Raiders.

As a Broncos fan, I want them to win. As a football fans you and I have both seen big upsets and surprise turns. As stated in the playoff thread, the Eagles do have that weird curse going. Who knows, the Broncos could be the next since last year we had a bye week and lost in a shoot out to the Ravens of all teams, at home.

/I want to see Brady come to Denver.
//What is it now? Like 10 of the 13 games now have been in Brady's back yard?

Which is why I floated the idea that the Pats may play the Chargers.  The Chargers are as inconsistent as the Colts, but their "inconsistency" is to consistently play well against the really good teams and flub against so-so ones.  I'd like to see Brady v. Manning again too as it's given some Pats' fan buddies some false sense of security since the last one was a really close game, but honestly, I'm pulling for the Chargers.

At least a handful are, but they're massive Brady fans and were sick of the play up of Luck all week.  And I mentioned Chargers in my slashies, it's just from my friends who are Pats fans, which is again relatively small, they don't really see the Chargers as a threat.  They should, but they don't.

To add on to this, as a Hawks fan, I legitimately see all the remaining teams this weekend as Super Bowl contenders including the Saints and Colts until they were knocked out.  Then again, the only team I didn't really see advancing all the way from the original 12 was the Packers and maybe the Chiefs.  Stranger things have happened though.

An AFC matchup between Brady and Manning would be nice, but I think the Chargers are going to give the Broncos a run for their money tomorrow. If there's going to be an upset this weekend, the Broncos will be the upset game. As good as Kapernick and the 49ers are, I think Newton is the better QB and the Panthers have the superior D. It'll be a helluva game tomorrow, but I'm giving the Panthers the win.

That said, I think if given the choice of SD or Denver to face in the AFC championship, the Pats probably have an easier time facing SD at home than they do Denver away, assuming Peyton doesn't choke in the playoffs.

Miami was a contender for the wild card for a while this season. and New England has suffered a bunch of injuries to key players this season. Hell, the Bills even looked kinda decent this year. Eh Luck made plenty of bad plays. The INT that shouldn't have happened (FB route) was offset by McCourty and Dennard (?) collided. The overly conservative coaching and a few blatant missed calls around 29-22 (tripping, hold on Pats 3rd down conversion), definitely did not help.

I will say I was sweating until the Pats finally made it an insurmountable lead.

When Indy was within a TD, I couldn't stop myself from thinking: "oh Christ, here we go again".

I don't think the Pats are beyond being beat by anyone, I'm assured your Pats pals don't remember the Grogan and Tippett days.

However, the fact that Blount sucker punched the Colts D on the way to a win makes me hold out a slim glimmer of hope that this new found ground domination can take them all the way.

If it was a lineman it was Ricky Jean Francois. If it was a linebacker, it was Walden. Don't recall much pissing off, but it could have been either. Walden was suspended a game for a helmetless headbutt, and RJF has a tendency to "sack dance" when losing by 20 or more.

There was one of the INT's on Luck where a LB picked him off then started going down field until he was eventually taken down by an O-Lineman. When he was getting up he walked across the O-Lineman (didn't step on him, just over him) and it looked like the O-Lineman tried to punch him in the nuts as he was going over the top. They didn't show it on the replay and I was kind of tied up watching the game and feeding my daughter so wasn't able to rewind, but did anyone else see it?

Gotcha, thanks for the confirmation. Wasn't sure if I saw what I thought I had seen. Should of been a flag on that one and if I recall correctly one of the Pat's players O-Line (Logan I think, was years ago) did it to a Broncos D-Line and was flagged for unsportsman like conduct and immediately ejected from the game.

I don't know why any Patriots fan would feel that getting to and winning the Superbowl is a sure thing. They won't be favored over any team remaining unless by some miracle of Yahweh the Chargers win tomorrow.

SearchN: There was one of the INT's on Luck where a LB picked him off then started going down field until he was eventually taken down by an O-Lineman.

Yeah on the Jamie Collins pick. I just saw the replay on the NFL network, the O-line guy took a swipe at him but he didn't connect and it didn't look overly awful but a swing none the less. Definitely nothing along the lines of Suh stomping someone.

Yes.

It didn't shock me. With all of the questionable crap that went on between the whistles, it was like the Colts were channeling the Montreal Canadiens.

And all of fark and the word is convinced that the Pats get away with everything. Thanks for reminding me of that gem.

NE is screwed if the Seahawks win the NFC. Denver is too

I think Brees showed too late that passers can be successful against the Hawks. Maybe it was because they set it up with three quarters of running and screen failing, but there was a glimmer of hope for the long ball once Brees finally got together.

Summoner101: redmid17: jaylectricity: Summoner101: jaylectricity: The AFC West was definitely the best division this year.

That's an interesting proposal, but I'd contend the Cardinals are better than the Chargers and the Rams are better than the Raiders.

Or maybe you meant the AFC West was the best in the AFC which I'd agree with.

Yeah, I meant the AFC. Not sure any team in the AFC could beat the best NFC team. But then again, I don't know as much about the NFC as I do the NFC.

Luck's willingness to throw it deep is a high risk/high reward style.
You get some breaks and your the 2013 Flacco but you risk the multi pick meltdown.

Colts are setting up tee times. Or helping out underage girls in the sticks...one or the other.

True but also kinda dismantles your AFC is hopeless narrative.

Oh gosh, you think I have a narrative? I've always wanted one of those.

No, but seriously, I don't think it really counts that one team beat another during the regular season.  You never know who was hurt during certain weeks or why one team just has the bead on another.

Yeah I think they set the FO record for variance. There were games I wanted to quit football and games I still don't believe happened.

Discount the Chargers at your own peril, grasshopper

/Seriously, they're a fun team to watch

Colts had a few more people not on IR during those games, but the 49ers and Seahawks were pretty healthy, minus Harvin (who might be done for the playoffs). You are right though, regular season results are no guarantee. If Russell plays against the 49ers or Broncos/Pats like he's done the last few weeks, well that won't be pretty.

Which is why I'm glad the Hawks got Wilson. He seems to have a better decision making ability and prep ethic.
