From the ODT -

Great game, Seattle.  Well earned.  Anyone going in there's got a tall order ahead of them.

About the game, no complaints about the D.  Kept us alive through 3 quarters when the offense was so badly struggling.  Offense, well...fark, lol, sure wish they could've gotten started before the 4th quarter.  Wish we could've caught a couple calls on their D, but eh.  Certainly got a few breaks along the way - the fumble that wasn't, the onside kick banging off the Seahawks player's chest, the Bengals/Auburn catch.  Although we could've been even luckier on that last one, would've been nice had the defenders knocked each other down like in the two prior instances.  But oh well.  Just couldn't pull that insane comeback all the way off.

About the season, hey, it's great to be back on track.  Payton's got the rust off and the D, well.  I wish I could buy Rob Ryan a Rolling Rock or five the way he's brought that D to life.  All in all, future's bright and now there's the Devils and Bulls to devote full attention to.

*whisper in my ear*

What's that?  The Bulls turfed the year - or tried to, and they've been winning anyway since then?  Shiat.

32 days until A-Rod officially begins sitting his ass at home!

/one last time for the sweet souvenir - who dat, baby

Edit - yes, it would've been nice if Colston had remembered there were time left to step OOB, lol, oh well

2014-01-11 09:51:04 PM
That Colston brain fart at the end stank so bad I'm still choking on the stink all the way across the country. Not like I really liked their chances by that point, but still...

Karma? She called to remind you to shut up and take your adderall, hoss. I'd say it had more to do with Seattle's crazy good defense, but if you want to make little of that and put it all on karma, you knock yourself out.

I missed the play, and just saw a replay.

I can see a guy who is stupid and doesn't step OOB. What he did should be remembered as one of the most boneheaded plays in NFL history, because he apparently forgot which direction he was going and threw a pass a few yards downfield.

I'm kind of worried about the Hawks offense.  There were some good pass plays, but Wilson botched a couple passes that he generally would have made though he recovered from just as many plays he should've been down.  I'm just glad that the Hawks have so much else to rely on that if one piece of their game doesn't function at a high level, there's plenty left to make up for it.

I really hope Bevell gets hired elsewhere.  For the past few weeks, he seems to have only three plays: handoff to Lynch, throw it deep in one-on-one, or a quick slant.  Wilson has the ability to tear it up, but the playcalling has been shiatacular.  It seems like, with Harvin out, Bevell went back to the vanilla gameplan.

Looks like a draft pick will go to a kicker this year.

We wouldn't have made it out of Philly with Hartley.  No way does he make four 30+ yarders in one game.

Only because he's not having to take the heat for missing the same kicks himself. First one, the holder apparently didn't get the laces out for the kick. Second miss was pretty much a pipe dream attempt from that distance into that wind. Probably not actually smiling at all compared to say, every Seahawks fan and Saints hater on the planet.

Besides the obvious Colston screw-up, I can't figure how they screwed up their time management at the end so bad. Sure it's crazy loud there, but a delay of game and then still having to call a time-out before getting the play off?

The funny thing (to me at least) is that the 'hawks don't really need THAT diverse of a gameplan. Wilson is still an average pocket passer for now but is deadly when he moves the pocket and forces the secondary to cover that much longer. With as much as they run, play-action bootlegs should be used way more heavily than they are.

Plush_Cthulhu: I guess he thought the clock was at 0:00 instead of 0:02?

Hell, it was at 0:07 when he started the throw.

The ONLY thing that I can think of is that he saw Brees having to scramble around a little bit, and assumed that it had run a lot of time off the clock. It's not like he had a lot of time to look up at the scoreboard, find the game clock, and make a decision. He had to have been thinking, once the pass was made, that "I have to make us score now".

I expect it was a designed play that didn't work as planned.  Payton didn't seem that bothered by how it played out and I highly doubt Colston would decide to improvise like that.  It's one of those plays that, if it works, then everyone involved is a genius but when it falls on its face (like it will do 90% of the time), it looks like a clusterfark.

In all it was a good game.  The NFL's "let them play" attitude toward calling penalties in the playoffs will necessarily hamper a precision offense, but it is what it is.   I guess they figure it would be far worse to have games hinge on key penalties in nearly every playoff game, and I can't say I have a huge argument against that, but it does mean that teams like the Saints will suffer for that.

And keep in mind Bevell was Brad Childress' O coordinator and it was just as vanilla and lame.  They're talking about him being a finalist here for the Vikings, I really hope he doesn't get hired.  I've seen too many years of crap offense to live through another 3.

Everything went as scripted. Hawks are good at home, Saints are bad on the road (especially in a bit of weather), Seahawks can run the ball, Hawks have a good D.

The thing that surprised me was how well the Saints D played today. Rob Ryan did a good job of game planning against Wilson. There's only so much you can do against Lynch, power running eventually overcomes a tired D-line.

Brees missed far too many short screen passes, must have been the gloves (or the noise).
