How about leaking a copy of an awards contender online?

That movie is an awards contender?

Tens of times? That's LITERALLY hundreds of millions of lost profits.

That's okay, I'm good.

You'd never get a job writing hyperbole for the MPAA.

Yeah I saw previews for this turd a couple times in the last month and there's no chance I'm seeing it. Ben Stiller is a one trick pony. Hasn't done anything decent since Zoolander.

2014-01-11 10:01:09 PM
Well, Academy member screeners of most of the award-contender current releases are also around for easy obtaining. If you can handle the occasional "For Your Consideration" appearing on screen, they're amazing quality.

The marketing on Mitty seems way off base. Should have a sense of fun, not the usual growler-guy voice-over and serious feel.

2014-01-11 10:01:36 PM
I've seen the film twice and enjoyed it both times, as did all of the people who were with me. It's not on the same level as the other big awards contenders like American Hustle, Her, etc., but it's still a good flick.

considering it's a remake, it's even less of a not so secret.

Definitely for cinematography. Maybe best direction too, just because it was shot on film, not digital. Hollywood insiders will appreciate that.

I downloaded it by accident when I was looking for some German Scheiße porn and autocorrect changed the title on me.

A constant theme from viewing links on Fark has taught me that 'controversy yields attention'.

This movie was dead in the water, made only close to half back of its $90 million budget. Perhaps it was intentionally leaked to garner some ticket sales and/or future after-theater profit. What do they have to lose?

We're now talking about the movie..without this controversy, we wouldn't be. The text overlay/bootleg feel adds some mystique.

See the Google results/how deep you can go on the results to see how many sites are covering this story:

i did not watch the wolf of wall street screener last night.  nor did i watch the gravity one weeks and weeks ago.  and the girlfriend didnt make me get the frozen screener last weekend.  screener season is the worst time for downloading high quality rips of movies that are not out on blu ray yet.

2014-01-11 10:40:50 PM
Screener season started almost a month ago with Gravity. By now I'm willing to bet that every heavyweight awards contender (and many of the lightweight ones as well) have several of them floating around in the internet somewhere, in at least 3 different formats and in at least 3 different levels of quality per format. It happens every year starting in December. Hell, sometimes the movie hits the internet before the movie hits the theaters if it has already shown in some film festival. Her is supposed to be a contender that isn't in theaters yet but because it got rave reviews at Sundance I'll bet that one could find a "For your consideration" copy right now.

I saw at least 5 different previews for that movie and still have zero idea what the hell it's about.

I'm sure it's way more than 10. I just checked a site that links to pirate movie streams and it's listed on 32 different sites, and that's just streaming sites, no telling how may bit torrent sites it's on.

I checked in to see what Ebert had to say about it.

Let me be frank: to use the words of the august founder of this website, I hated, hated, hated this movie.

Apparently not too hot on it.

I assumed they just sent clips of these movies along when they do these talk show promotion tours, I didn't know they sent the whole damn movie. Do they think the hosts are going to actually watch the whole thing just to prepare for a 5 minute interview?

The previews for this movie look absolutely awful.  I can only imagine what it's like for the people tasked with assembling the trailer.

My bad. that was Glenn Kenny at Roger Ebert dot com.

Ebert would have reviewed it but he took the easy way out.

Okay, now that's funny.

To me this is one of those things where you hear about it and go... Really? What's the point?

Some stories don't translate well to film and some movies don't need to be "re-imagined".

This is about award screeners. So, Ellen is an academy voter (I guess) so they want her to see the movie and vote for it. Decades ago, they put on special screenings, but now they send them DVDs, each one marked.

2014-01-11 11:51:12 PM
Hypothetically, let's say that I watched this on one of those illegal sites yesterday when I was bored. Then I would hypothetically be able to confirm that a watermark reading: "ELLEN DEGENERES 11/26/13" kept popping up throughout the picture. Hypothetically, of course.
