(Punk Rock Libertarians)   "That's where the magic of government math comes into play. By arbitrarily declaring unemployed people, the vast majority of whom are desperate for work, as no longer in the workforce it's easy to fudge the numbers and paint a rosy picture"   (punkrocklibertarians.com) divider line 121

the vast majority of whom are desperate for work

Let's see if I have this straight.

When the left is pushing to extend long-term UE benefits, the right declares we shouldn't because those receiving UE benefits are either lazy or stupid (or both), and of course it will make them dependent on government.

When the right wants to attack the administration over the UE rate, those receiving UE benefits are now desperate for work.

Neato.

Agreed.  And if we put the Republicans back in power, this will suddenly not be a big deal as cutting more taxes to the Rich and undermining capitalism because fark you got mine.

It's because jobs (which Republicans create) are healthful and wholesome, like shredded wheat.  Unemployment handouts (which Democrats create) are very bad for you, like sugared frosting.  Those two things simply can't exist together, as Republican scientists have shown.

It means the author is 19, and just learned about how the unemployment rate is derived in his Econ 102 class.

This is why the unemployment rate is only one many measures to consider such as the workforce participation rate, the rate of full time employment, etc...

Goimir: Tax cuts for the rich creating jobs is like lowering the liquor tax giving people more discretionary income.

Lowering the liquor tax is actually more beneficial since it gives an incentive to spend.  And even giving tax cuts to the rich on the condition of making jobs would make some sense (provided we had the demand in the first place).  That's not what's happening here.  What's  happening is we're giving blanket tax cuts to the rich without conditions and hoping that maybe this time they won't beat us up so badly.  Remember the tax holiday for repatriated funds?

I don't know how unemployment numbers are calculated. I am not an economist. However, I make the flying assumptions that:

1. They're calculated the same way every quarter
2. The algorithm that's used is well-known and publicly available
3. When people are assumed to have "dropped out of the workforce" - well, that's how we've always done it.

So this is really just spin. I assume.

I used to be a Republican until I read the brilliant Dr. Ron Paul and realized that much like The Good Doctor I too was a libertarian.  It's a pretty rebellious position and yet conversely it is truly conservative because it shows my dedication to The Constitution.  Everyone on my dorm floor knows that I am the go-to authority on all Constitutional issues and I am available to expound at length on my positions.

Have you read Ayn Rand?  You really need to read Ayn Rand.  She will change your life.

Dusk-You-n-Me: the vast majority of whom are desperate for work

Let's see if I have this straight.

When the left is pushing to extend long-term UE benefits, the right declares we shouldn't because those receiving UE benefits are either lazy or stupid (or both), and of course it will make them dependent on government.

When the right wants to attack the administration over the UE rate, those receiving UE benefits are now desperate for work.

Neato.

Totally agreed.

I've personally been saying all along that the very low labor participation rate is artificially making the unemployment figures look better than they are, but this has been a problem for a few years now. It's not because "Obama bad" it's because supply side economics are bullshiat and they've been slowly strangling our economy for decades. Now the economy is turning blue and starting to go limp. We've allowed the GOP to push policy so far to the right that even many of the democrats are too far right economically. Obama and the Dems are better than the republicans, but we do need even better than that.

The problem is that we're just not doing it enough.  The reason these policies are failing is because they are not conservative enough.  If they were TRULY conservative then they would work.
