WTFDYW: RottenEggs: It's almost noon and I haven't left the house yet . But I'm sure when  I leave I will see that the Post Office ,McDonalds , etc. will once again be flying our flag at half staff . Shiats getting old .....

Why would any flags be half staff? He's not an American hero. I couldn't understand it when all federal buildings were ordered to fly their flags half staff when Mandela passed away. Our post office didn't follow orders though.

Yeah but somebodys  always looking for a way for our nation to be downtrodden and humbled  . It's very popular these days .

Not to mention he has family - they didn't do anything wrong and they are dealing with the loss of a father, grandfather, etc.

I just watched The Little Mermaid with the audio off, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. I was actually amazed at how lousy the animation was in that film. In the 5 short years between The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, animation techniques (at least at the movie level) improved significantly with stronger emphasis on shading and realistic rendering of environment.

Because diplomacy, under which such gestures fall, required it, and diplomacy is preferable to lots of other things. Notice that South Africa didn't immediately scramble its fighter jets to bomb your renegade post office, either, because the point of the gesture is to say, "hey, South Africa, we're sufficiently on your side in the general scheme of things that we're not going to take advantage of the opportunity to be assholes by  not making a token gesture."

Besides which, as I read the rules, Obama can order it lowered for whatever reason he likes: "In addition to [basically anyone, anywhere, American or not, dying], the president may order half-staff display of the flag after other tragic events." They're canceling  The Mentalist? Lower that goddamn flag.

DRTFA so I don't know if Sharon will get the flag treatment--probably not, since for ceremonial and diplomatic purposes he's been dead for a long time. But there'll be reams and reams of nice flowery eulogies printed out by our diplomats, notwithstanding the fact that Sharon wasn't a plaster saint, because we're not actively at war with Israel and Sharon wasn't literally the worst person ever to walk the earth, and that's what you do under those circumstances.

Yeah, that's Fark for you.

What's respectful about that headline? It's not necessarily mean, but it's clearly a joke.

It's not a mean-spirited joke. Nelson Mandela's headline made him the punchline for an Al Sharpton joke. I mean, shiat, Nelson Mandela couldn't even get top billing in his own death announcement on Fark. I'd say there's a difference there.

He couldnt get top billing at his funeral!

NK wants to destroy the US.  It makes a great big deal out of that desire, stating it all the time and in ALL CAPS SOMETIMES.

That said, it has no power to do so.  It's a small yapping dog with minimal ability to do anything more than hurt people now and again.

I see the Palestinians in much the same light in regards to Israel and its existence.  A small yapping dog that won't shut up even when shutting up in its best interest.

That said, the Israelis lost any and all moral high ground when they went out of their way to sabotage and dismantle the 'Nonviolent' Palestinian resistance.

If you don't know that the Palestinians 'did' nonviolent resistance, you're not alone.  Go research it and then tell me how sympathetic you feel toward Israel afterward.

The prophecy of his death bringing about the apocalypse was made by an Israeli rabbi.

Truly apocalyptic predictions are not generally part of contemporary mainstream Judaism, come to think of it. Its clear Sharon wasn't the Mashiach, and apocalyptic readings of the Book of Daniel were said to be fulfilled long ago. Which Israeli rabbi is saying this? Was it a Messianic "Jews for Jesus" type guy?

Nope, I'm talking about the nonviolent protests that were broken up with water cannons and rubber bullets and tear gas.  I'm talking about the early efforts to use nonviolence and were brutally broken up and whose failures were used as excuse by extremists to push the notion that violent protest was the only answer for the Palestinians.
