Great news for those of us who only drink coffee and water.  Now, if they could only do something about the tooth staining.

diuretic?   The L Ron Hubbard book?

I'm not following.

People were actually thinking that drinking coffee would cause you to expel more water than what was in the coffee? How strange...

So I can still mainline espresso on an IV drip? cool

Damn right it is. I can't accomplish the morning massive without a cup.

Although, for Christmas, I bought Mrs. PCoC a five-pound bag of Deathwish coffee. Just the smell of the grounds sends me off to start laying cable. I don't even need to drink the stuff.

So why do I feel dried out after drinking nothing but coffee all day long?

2014-01-11 01:39:01 PM
Not new.  Caffeine is a general stimulant.  Just makes things go faster.  Urine production, gastric motility, etc...

This explains why I'm not dead.

Moderate coffee consumption. Doesn't apply to me.

So how do they explain when I drink 2 cups of coffee I piss three cups when that's all I've injested in the past 12 hours?

No pissshiat?

"There is no evidence to suggest that there is a link between moderate coffee consumption and ... pure caffeine."

Imagine that.

On that day I was making fermented trucker bombs for a particularly nasty individual.  So I figured I'd also test the diuretic effect of coffee as well.

I hate when that happens.  At least let me get the pot brewing before I sprint off to the john.

The "how" is that he's reusing the same cup.
The "why" is that it's sterile and he likes the taste.

All I do is fart in the morning until I get that first two sips of coffee. I sit comfortably on the john, grab something to read and it is blissful after that point.

What is 'moderate' consumption? 2 cups/day? 6 cups/day? A whole pot in the morning and nothing after noon?

meat0918: 4 cups is moderate consumption?????

A liquid measured cup isn't really that much coffee. I basically drink two in the morning because I have large mugs; some days it's 3-4, but not usually. I discovered during BCT that straight water actually does wake you up. Obviously it also increases your bathroom use, but it's worth it not to be all sleepy during a meeting or class. My Nalgene always came with me, even to the computer labs, because screw The Man and his lab rules.

Might be were the idea that coffee is a diuretic comes in.  That much liquid will have most visiting the restroom fairly frequently.

Paid for by Starbucks.

While a normal cup of coffee won't be that bad, once you dip into espresso-land, you get diminishing returns on your hydration.

From everything I've read, the average coffee drinker consumes 3 cups a day.

I've always understood coffee not to be a diuretic in lower amounts, but over a certain threshold is becomes one.

Over a certain threshold you've just drank a shiatton of fluid and need to pee.

The magic in coffee isn't that it makes to you pee, it's that it makes you POOP!

If you have diarrhea problems, get rid of all the caffeine in your diet.  Even tea and decaf can be enough to set me off.  A cup every other day is fine, but 2 cups == mud-butt.  The more you know...
