Until the laws are updated to include Bieberisim then all they can do is use existing laws to protect the publics safety.

I believe it's Sweden(or Finland) that assesses financial penalties for breaking the law based on a 'proportional' scale according to your yearly income.

So, a speeding ticket that may cost most folk $200 or something would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200k or even $2mil if your wealth is great enough.

There's something to be said for making breaking the law and the requisite financial restitution something that even the rich fear.

Well yeah, that's pretty damn obvious, especially the Goth thing, but I don't necessarily think felony convictions should be tossed around like that. Young people are stupid and they make mistakes (this has nothing to do with Bieber, that dipshiat has had plenty of chances to come around), those felony convictions put you behind the eight ball in life.

Like I said, I have no idea what the situation is in California, all I've done is vacation there. Maybe the low dollar value came about from gang tagging activity, maybe they don't pursue the felony charges in most cases, I really don't know. I guess knowing the dollar value for a theft that would lead to a felony conviction would probably be good for comparison.

Ultimately, that's the law and that's life, that's what voting is for if you don't like it. If that fails, that's what moving is for.

I wonder when the amount was put at $400.  It seems like maybe time for a cost of felony adjustment.

It's really not that hard to rack up $400 in damages

They have the option to charge it as a felony, or not. Up to the prosecutor. Of course, they usually will, because dramatically overcharging is seen as helping one's negotiating position in the eventual plea bargain. It's an interesting system we have. Note that I didn't attach the term "justice" to "system", because it doesn't really seem to be about that.

He probably won't even get deported, even if they somehow stick him with the felony conviction. Of course, Lindsay Lohan's case turned out to be a source of years of entertainment, and did her a good bit of damage, despite never racking up more than a day in jail at any point. I can only hope for a similar outcome here.

It'll inconvenience him a bit and that's acceptable. Most rich people are immune to inconvenience, so we win.

Exactly. Lohan gets away with a shiatload more and despite what people seem to think, she's hardly rich.
