Gates can shut up about Biden. At the very least he's one of the most humane people we have in higher office. He's an actual human being.

The eulogy he gave for Senator Claiborne Pell was something I'll never forget.

What's that you say? A Republican hired by a Democratic president as a show of bipartisanship turns around and bites his benefactor in the ass to drum up publicity for his new book? Color me surprised. Jon Huntsman has demonstrated that reaching across the aisle is the kiss of death in Republican politics (as Chris Christie will learn soon enough), so what choice does Gates have except to stab his former employer in the back in order to cash in?

Really, at this point, in order to remain Republican you have to be stupid, greedy, racist, religiously intolerant, misogynistic, homophobic, some combination, or all of the above. I will simply never vote for a Republican candidate again, ever, for any office (I must admit, in the last election I did write in Romney's name for animal control officer). Nobody worthy of my vote would register Republican in the first place. Time for that party to die.

The only thing that this does is demonstrate that Gates' opinion of Obama and Biden doesn't reflect the majority of the country's opinion of the two men.

It also demonstrates that Obama was all about getting out of Afghanistan...the only possible sane stance for anyone looking at the situation objectively.

This actually makes Obama look better?

Kibbler: I...sort of am OK with Gates on this.  I don't agree with him.  But really what he said was, "It turned out that Obama and Biden were opposed to the war in Afghanistan.  That they didn't trust the military-industrial complex to handle things.  That they were simply determined to get out."

Yes.  Yes.  Agreed.  Yes.  I'm perfectly OK with Gates making this case.  Those who trust the military-industrial complex to wage Endless War For Freedum are free to trust it.  Those of us who don't can acknowledge what Gates said.  He didn't lie, or whine, at least from what I can glean from the articles (haven't read the book).  He simply said that he was frustrated that Obama and Biden didn't feel comfortable turning the keys over to him and saying, "Lock up when you're done."

That's right, and that's one of the reasons we voted for them.

What I said already.  He got paid big $$$ to write a book that basically reaffirms what we all already knew: The Obama Administration's primary military goal was to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq ASAP.  Which is, again, the only sane stance a person can take after objectively looking at the situation.

A Terrible Human: [img.fark.net image 600x398]

I watched that debate.  Still fondly remember it.  Ryan made a big deal on interviews about "studying up" for the debate.  And he took a shellacking.

All that work and he still went down in flames that easily.

Biden- "That never happened!"
Ryan- "Yes, it did."
Biden- "That never happened.  Never."
Ryan- "I'm pretty sure it did."
Biden- "Nope.  Never.  Happened."
Ryan- "Well... I thought it did...."

From the book Gates is selling - 'I was put off by the way the president closed the meeting. To his very closest advisers, he said, "For the record, and for those of you writing your memoirs, I am not making any decisions about Israel or Iran. Joe, you be my witness." I was offended by his suspicion that any of us would ever write about such sensitive matters.' LINK

When you see political discourse, do you often visualize homosexual masturbation games?

Or is it only when you come to Fark?

Do you have a better term for this thread?

Political back-and-forth?  Trolls trolling trolls who are trolling?

I mean, if you're seeing something else in your mind's eye, that's all you, man, I'm just wondering why most conservatives seem to fixate on gay activity.

This thread is not political back and forth (with a few exceptions). It is mostly mindless love of Biden because he has a silly Onion meme and often has humorous photo-ops.

You think I am conservative? Oh, wait, this is Fark Politics. Anyone who ever doesn't like a Democrat for whatever reason is a conservative. I forgot.

I've never seen a rational person snark on Biden, only conservatives.  And it's a well-established conserva-trope that Biden is a 'buffoon.'

So are you an actual idiot, or are you just pretending?

Nonrepeating Rotating Binary: "Domestic political considerations would therefore be a factor, though I believe never a decisive one, in virtually every major national security problem we tackled," Gates wrote.

Damn fool if, for even a fraction of a second, 'domestic policy considerations' aren't at the top of the list for every farking issue ever considered by pretty much every government on Earth since the beginning of time.

It 'is' amusing how outraged Gates seems to be about the fact that the President weighs all factors of a situation, including its political impact abroad and at home.

Maybe he's used to Bush's way of 'screw it all, let's invade something' mentality.

I've been waiting for years now to see the "human gaffe machine" as people like this refer to him as, actually make these horrible, endless gaffes that he supposedly makes.

The man all but made Paul Ryan cry in the VP debates, and was smart enough to soundly beat Sarah Palin but held back enough to not look like he was "beating up a woman."  He's incredibly intelligent, seems to be kind, and I'd say most people generally don't have problems with him.

This. Gates backed McChyystal on the failed Afghanistan surge policy whereas Biden wanted a smaller, more focused force to train Afghans and only strike AQ targets directly, which we eventually shifted our policy to after the surge failed.

"The Rolling Stone article anonymously quoted McChrystal's aides as criticizing President Barack Obama's team, including Vice President Joe Biden. Biden had disagreed with McChrystal's strategy that called for more troops in Afghanistan. Biden preferred to send a smaller counterterrorism and training force -- a policy the White House is now considering as it transitions troops from the Afghan war."

Really? President Obama doesn't consider a war started in 2001 by President Bush to be his (guess he also denied having his time machine) and wants to get out of it? The guy CAMPAIGNED on ending these bullshiat wars.  This is not news. And most people are sick of this war and sick of paying for this war. My tax dollars have been funding this crap for almost half my adult life.  I'm glad he wants to end that war. I just wish it had been ended sooner.

"For too many people -- including defense 'experts,' members of Congress, executive branch officials and ordinary citizens -- war has become a kind of videogame or action movie: bloodless, painless and odorless," Gates wrote. "But my years at the Pentagon left me even more skeptical of systems analysis, computer models, game theories or doctrines that suggest that war is anything other than tragic, inefficient and uncertain."

Putting boots on the ground is tragic and inefficient.

Gates accused Biden of "poisoning the well" between the White House and military leaders and criticized the vice president's preferred strategy of relying on counterterrorist strikes from afar, writing that "'Whac-A-Mole' hits on Taliban leaders weren't a long-term strategy."

But not putting boots on the ground is worse.

Obama in 2011 began questioning his own strategy for the conflict in Afghanistan, which had been opposed by some of his advisers, Gates wrote. As a candidate, Obama supported the Afghanistan war as an appropriate and deployed an additional troops to the country as president.

So Obama put more boots on the ground.

"I never doubted Obama's support for the troops, only his support for their mission," Gates writes.

But that was bad too, because he didn't like-like the idea.
