So now the ME 109 will have been built by American heroes?

How can it be the "American Heroes" network, when all it shows is non-stop shows about WW2-era Germany?

2014-01-11 08:09:50 AM
There's more than three of them.

2014-01-11 08:20:46 AM
In my father's declining years I was obligated to watch many of the WWII documentaries on cable. Most were awful. Like 99%.

I still DVR for my wife (the published WWII historian) any show that is more human interest (interviews, reading of letters) since she is on a frantic path to collect audio interviews on our remaining military from that era.

Ah good, a network about all of us. Because aren't we all really the greatest hero in American history?

They stole the design from us and used it to bomb Pearl Harbor.

You laugh, but I look back to the time when the History Channel showed history. Who'd have guessed that "Hitler and Rome Only" were HIGHPOINTS in the last 15 years?

Depends on the guy, have an uncle who was an island hopper, and my grand dad flew PBYs out of Gitmo, neither talks/talked about it

I remember the days before being a hero became a participation trophy.  Back when heroes were people who did something heroic.

This.

The use of the words 'hero' and 'patriot' and whatnot have become so widespread as to be meaningless. Really, they are just market branding now.

What was once known as "educational TV", which was never really all that good, morphed into the fetid, oozing cesspool of reality TV that it is today.  I guess I should have seen it coming, but it is morphing again, this time into the Ignorant White Redneck USA! USA! cesspool.  FAUX News should be concerned--hillbillies screaming "USA! USA y'all! F*ck yeah!" and footage of missiles 'splodin' stuff real good is even easier to digest than smirking bubbleheads in suits.

I can't imagine what is next, what can be lower.  But then I am a person of limited imagination, because I couldn't imagine anything lower than what it has been for the past ten years.  "Ow! My Balls" I guess.  Or maybe "Kickin' People in the Balls Fer Jesus n' Murca."

2014-01-11 11:53:07 AM
Great, is their new symbol going to be Stars and Stripes Zubaz pants with a rocket stuffed into the crotch?

Why don't you just play 24 hours of monster truck rallies and fake hillbillies shooting taxidermied wildlife?

Looks like Frank Luntz is doing the branding behind this one.

I think Seal Team 6 should do an incursion into his house.

Look, I would argue that most of those in the military ARE heroes, but just curious here, folks:

1) How does this work if that channel wants to talk about Lynndie England (see below)?

potomac9499.files.wordpress.com

2) American Heroes you say?  So, this will encompass teachers, doctors, inventors and other pioneers?

Oh, it won't?  So you're just a bunch of conservative asshole trolls who thinks the military has a monopoly on the word Hero.

Oh, ok. Well then.....

F*CK YOU

I honestly think the end result is a propaganda machine on par with North Korea. Romanticize the lowest common denominator as the paragons of true America. Fetishize the military at expense of history and context. Condemn those who speak out against said paragons of true America. Rinse and repeat over a few iterations. It's a closed feedback loop where business gives the people what they want, and it increasingly self-selects for comforting propaganda.

This is stupid. The superficial military worship is also stupid.

Fetishize the military at expense of history and context.

The Military is held in such high esteem because it's the last bastion of integrity left in America. They win by default. There are no admirable figures left in politics, business, entertainment, academia, you name it. The scarey part is if our democracy gets any more dysfunctional they'll be a rising chorus from certain segments of society for a military takeover to save the country.

Military personnel serve the country, sacrifice their personal comfort, family life, occasionally their health and lives, and generally behave like gentlemen doing it. With some notable exceptions that DO NOT invalidate everything good the military does.

Contrast that with the depravity in the entertainment world, the pathetic politicians on both sides of the fence, predatory businessmen, hypocritical academia, etc.

Still, it's a stupid channel name change. A channel with tons of Nazi pron on it can't accurately be described as an American Hero channel. Prolly the result of some pimply faced marketing weenies....

2014-01-11 12:25:58 PM
Without that restrictive old name holding them back, they can finally branch out into programming about real American Heroes: pawn shop owners, rednecks and hillbillies.

I actually know more about what my wife's grandfather did in the war than either of my grandparents. My grandfathers didn't want to discuss it at all, even though I enjoyed WWII history. My wife's grandfather wrote a book about his time in the army in the pacific. We received it as a typed manuscript. We scanned it, edited it and had it printed/published at Amazon. We gave him one of the paperbacks of his book for Christmas a couple years ago.

We ended up with a lot of his WWII stuff too. None of the boys in his family actually cared about it, so I ended up with much of it. No M1 Garand, but there is a Japanese infantry rifle, coming my way along with the Japanese Cavalry Sabre I already have from him.

mark12A: because it's the last bastion of integrity left in America.

It is? Where does your perspective of this high level of integrity come from? Sure, a lot of people serving have risked their lives and performed feats of amazing heroics, but in general, the military is neutral. Most people aren't risking their lives and most are just chugging through their service like any other job.

Sigh...scratch another one off the list.

I swear to God, if they fark with the Science Channel...

The perfect channel for the US.  It will allow all of the couch potatoes to watch real people in action and allow them to fantasize how it could be them.  Or to watch other people do things that they would crap themselves over.

Day to day life in the military is a burden, even when you're not getting shot at. Depending on the service branch. it's varying doses of non-stop manual labor, paperwork, boredom, uncomfortable work environment, getting ordered around by people you often don't like, having to swallow endless slights by equally cranky co-workers. No control over your movements, your downtime, the ultimate Nanny State.

Yet these people do it for an idealistic cause, i.e., protecting the country. Keeping a formidable war machine running and at the ready is enough to keep other countries from messing with us. Keeping our complex and expensive war machine in running order takes lots of work and entails LOTS of responsibility on the individuals doing it. And THEN after ALL this, they run into harms way on our behalf so the rest of us don't have to. That's a whole hellava lot more than entertainment, sports, political and business people do for us.

Because there's no ground between those extremes.

Maybe we could treat them like normal people and drop just a bit of the creepy jingoism.

i liked the military channel, but then i love world war 2 documentaries.  they had some other cool shows where they re-enacted specific battles with tanks to try to show all the strategy, which i found fascinating.  they also showed lee ermey's lock and load show, which was awesome.  the only show i wasn't big on was the modern weapons one, where the guy just talked about shooting the newest kind of gun but the show really didn't have any point.  i don't mind the name change, since they have always focused on american wars anyway.  but it would be cool to see some documentaries about more obscure wars that american played no part in, like the boer war or the russo-japan war, or even the soviet-afghanistan war.

If youread the article, it says the name change allows the channel to expand their offerings to policemen, firemen, and "those who don't wear a uniform."

So, there you go. It will become the "real american hero"/"real men of genius" channel that we all deserve, showing old reruns of Dirty Jobs. And Duck Dynasty.

Their first week promises a show called "Codes and Cospiracies". I look forward to the heroes within the Mason's ranks.
