(Do You Remember)   Say what you will about Tammy Faye Bakker, but back in the 80s while Jim Bakker was interviewing Colonel Sanders, she was one of the lone voices of AIDS activism and extremely tolerant of homosexuality   (doyouremember.com) divider line 79

I met her once in Gatlinburg, Tn. It surprised me how nice she was. I was laughing at a t-shirt that that a street vendor was selling that had a real mess of colors on the front that said "I ran into Tammy Faye at the mall". She tapped me on the shoulder and said that if I bought it she would sign it. I was at a loss for words for a moment. I declined saying the shirt was in poor taste and nothing I would ever wear. She smiled, thanked me, and walked off with the couple of other people she was with.

exvaxman: It surprised me how nice she was

I met her in the mid 90s (after her empire fell apart) and was impressed by the same thing.  I was working at a conference center as a waiter, there was this large Christian Conference of some sort there and she was speaking, for the most part the attendees were jerks, she on the other hand took the time to speak with every staff member she met and seemed to really care for the rest of humanity,  She really seemed to be a true "Love Thy Neighbor" Christian.

my uncle used to own a trucking company and was transporting a load of really expensive furniture for them when the shiat hit the fan. Bakker's people called him and had him stop delivery on the load and hang onto it until they notified him otherwise. Word never came so he sold the load to pay for storage. it had a really expensive conference room table, really nice chairs and other office stuff. He made quite a bit on it iirc.

It did

"On March 19, 1987, following the revelation of a payoff to Hahn to keep secret her allegation that Bakker and another minister had raped her, Bakker resigned from PTL."

We were talking about the Bakers/PTL downfall over the holidays and our young adult children asked 'who?' 'what?'. It occurred to me that we're primed for another generation to be fall victim of these mega-church scammers. The young adults maybe aren't as diligent and the elderly don't remember. It maybe the younger generation is more skeptical and aware than I give them credit.

I didn't care enough about her to know she was dead or RTFA but I noticed enough about the FarkLine to be reminded that we piss far to much money away on AIDS research.

My father passed away nine years ago.   He lived alone and it was my job to go through his things and get the house ready to sell.  One of the last things I went through was his brief case.  He had already been retired for five years at this point.  Anyway, I had to break into it.  There were stubs from his old paychecks.  Clippings from the paper from Billy Graham columns and a copy of the Jessica Hahn playboy issue.   creepy.

Regardless, I'd pay to see a PTL version of American Hustle. I realize there were some made-for-tv versions back in the day, but folks need to see how people are scammed outside of Wall Street.

FTFA: Whether they were a symbol of '80s excess or the hidden dark side of American evangelism, the Bakkers provided a window onto the times, when a decaying nation desperately clung to a fraudulent moral facade.

Wow, now that's some dark shiat there.

I will always remember her on that series that her son had for a while "One Punk Under God" on Sundance.  She seemed like a very nice, slightly wacky, lady.  And, she seemed sincere in her beliefs.  Too bad that she was married to Jim Bakker who seemed to be all about making that dollar.

See, you have to remember that KFC started when Col. Sanders was owner of a roadside rest stop. Basically, the Colonel was providing glory holes and a nice chicken dinner to recharge yourself after a thorough reaming.

Jim's still on TV, from Branson, Missouri. Hawking survival food and stuff on a show that runs like the old one did.

Highly offensive. All stories I heard first hand about him were what a great person he was. Including from where he developed the recipe in Shelbyville and scared the newlywed who lived upstairs by asking constantly if she liked the chicken. She thought she could not cook as well. From the realty agent that sold the couple that house with him remaining in the lower level. I dislike the KFC chicken but really enjoyed Claudia's stories.

How can you dislike KFC chicken? I mean, it's not the best chicken in the world, but what's to dislike?

Also you earned a very interesting farky "white knight re: Col. Harland Sanders" which I'm sure will amuse me greatly in a couple of years when I've totally forgotten all of this

My (Wife, I know, yelled at by farkers for calling her my better two thirds) is from that day/age for KFC. Our son was tasked to do a scientific investigation. We bought a fried chicken from every available chain/available. Based on a blind taste test the Popeyes mild won by everyone including the cats, but not the wife.

Kudos for having enough respect for her to do that.  I've actually not ever heard a bad thing about Tammy Faye (other than the cracks about her admittedly over-the-top makeup). She struck me as a genuinely good (although somewhat naïve) person while Jim was a hustler out for the money and someone not to be trusted.  The season of "The Surreal Life" that she was on was the only one I watched all the way through, and I found it interesting how well she got along with everyone, and Ron Jeremy in particular.  There were a couple of moments where she refused to participate with the group because it wasn't compatible with her moral compass, but she always did so graciously and without being judgmental.  It was kind of heartbreaking watching the Larry King interview she did not even a day before she died - she was so frail, but completely and totally without fear.
