eeesh. If you want to live in a bubble, stay in there.

Answer the fu*king question.

We have come way too far as a society to accommodate this kind of backwards bullsh*t.

Exactly.  If he wants to avoid any interaction with women he should just do what thousands of college students before him have done and major in engineering.

Let me guess... Evangelical Christian, right?

I would have guessed Orthodox Jew.  But whatevs.

What I don't understand is how this didn't come up sooner.  What made this class different?  Shouldn't this kid's special needs have been addressed much earlier?  On the flip side, why did the kid agree to attend a school where this might be an issue?

I'm part of an international technical community which hosts free training conferences on weekends all over the world.  I was surprised to see pictures from one of the events held in Saudi Arabia where there was a tall temporary wall down the middle of the room, with the men on one side and the women on the other side, each with view of the speaker and the projection screen.  Apparently this is common practice in business there.

Yup. Very common with a lot of strict religions; Saudi just takes it to the governmental level.

At the masjid I attended in Edmonton, there was a balcony with a half wall for the women to sit, so they would be separate from the men. The half wall was so the men below could not see them. When there aren't separate floors, there are dividers, or the women stand in the back.

In a back-ass way, I kind of understand why. The idea is for the one sex to not be distracted by the other. Also, keep in mind the way they pray; when you are packed like sardines and you are kneeling and leaning towards the butt in front of you?? Yeah, that could get distracting. That's also one of the reasons for the ritualistic bath you take before you pray; it helps cut down the smells.

It's an online university course, but he was told upfront there would be some group work.

He asked the prof for an exemption from working with women on a group assignment.

The prof said no, and the student said okay, and completed the work anyway.

The Dean heard about it, told the prof he had to accomodate the student, but asked the prof to keep it quiet from the rest of the class.

shiatstorm resulted.

No problem. All he has to do is produce a note from a recognized Rabbi or Imam to that effect, and he's free & clear.

Would any mainstream religious leader provide such a note and bring the wrath of mainstream society down upon them?

wouldn't it depend on the class? if the women studies class was about human sexuality, those sorts of terms could come up. i guess you could use the more clinical name but i'd figure by the time you're a college kid, you've probably heard the term before.

I've taken women studies classes, and when discussing human sexuality in an educational setting, adults use terms like oral sex.

Interacting with many people of varied backgrounds is half of what going to college is all about.  If that offends your crazy religion then there are plenty of online colleges that cater to the socially awkward.

Heh. We hired a woman recently of a certain fundy persuasion (guess which!) and she won't shake hands with men (and this in a job that routinely requires client meetings) and during those meetings, she will sit as far away from the men as she can - often on the other side of the large conference room. You can tell that some of the clients are pretty confused.

But what if it was a woman requesting not to work with men?

Would the professor have accommodated the request?

Would the MPs that are barking like seals over this, be barking like seals over that request?

If yes.....hypocrisy  abounds!

I once asked for a similar accomodation in a logic course.  To get out of a project on paradoxes, I turned in a note explaining that my religion forbids me from claiming that it forbids anything.

What religion is that? I know none of the Abrahamic religion requires this, and Hindus don't require it either.

Buddhist? I don't know.

I can't think of any other religion. I think that guy just made it up to not have to do lab work that he was probably failing.

FTA "You have to nip this in the bud, because what you're dealing with here is a basic hornet's nest," Dr. Grayson said in an interview. "What if ... I said, well, my religion really frowns upon my interacting with blacks? I'm a Mormon"

Fixed that for him.  I while I support the freedom of people to follow any religion (or none at all) that they choose, I see absolutely no reason that they should expect others to bend over backwards to accommodate their beliefs.  That is just not reasonable.

BWAHAHAHA!!

Seriously though ... this cat should just go to a Saudi Arabian college. I'm fine with the fact that he doesn't want to interact with women (good, more for me), but the Western world isn't set up that way. That cowardly dean should be sacked, then fired.

I'd laugh this guy out of my office* if he tried it in my class.

"Tell me why you don't want to work with women."
"My religion says I can't."
"That doesn't answer the question.  I asked why you don't want to."
"My religion says I can't."
"That's not a reason, that's an excuse.  You're an adult, right?  Surely you can make your own decisions."
"My religion says I can't."
"OK, fine, show me the passage in your holy book where you're forbidden to do class projects with people with boobs."

This sketch has been brought to you by Internet Tough Guy Theatre (a Strawman co-production).
If I tried this in real life, I'd probably get fired - not that that really matters to an academic hobo like myself, but I'd kinda like to walk out the door with a good reference letter.
