I suppose that you could actually make an argument for that, although liar and greatest mass murderer in Asia since Pol Pot....those are still apt.

Any way to avoid the politics and/or offensiveness thing altogether and just think it's lazy, boring excuse for "art"?

Uh... yes you are. You ARE a dork. Get used to it.

Eventually, you'll get out of high school and being a dork won't be quite so big an issue. You'll even find girls who like you despite (or maybe even because of) being a dork. You'll gradually find ways to be a bit less awkward, but you're always going to feel like a dork. It's who you are.

Hopefully the artist was also a bit of a prankster and gave these people permanent magic markers. Then again, if the old lady got beat up for being a Nazi sympathizer that would be really bad . Ok, washable marker for the old lady, perm marker for everyone else (especially the dork).

Ant: I am not my thoughts?
I am not my character?

If you're not either one of those things, WTF are you?

I think the character one is a reffernce to video game avatars, at least that's how I took it.

But yeah the thought one makes no sense to me. If we are not out thoughts, then we would be mindless drones that suffering schizophrenia, as we seem to have other people's thoughts in our heads. I understand the concept of having thoughts that will never be actualized, but it doesn't change the fact that they are still ours and that those thoughts are a defining feature of our personalities.

That was my take on it. If that's the case, then she'd have been tattooed with a number; the "my number" that the picture's title refers to.

BunkyBrewman: Not sure how it would offend anyone.  It's all about people's own insecurities and coming to terms with them.

Some people might read into this group of pictures an implication that the issues being dealt with are somehow equal. If one assumes this reading, then it makes sense why some might take umbrage at lumping the Vietnam veteran with the transwoman, or the Muslim (Sikh-mistaken-for-Muslim?) with the suicidal person, or the Holocaust survivor with the eating disorder sufferer, or the RPG player with any of the others.

Truth be told, I don't accept that reading as reasonable. But it's still useful to empathize with, for the sake of argument.

Thank you for the explanation of the character one, though it was a poor word choice since using the word avatar instead of character would have cleared up the ambiguity.

In the I am not my thoughts one, I can only guess that the poor man has many suicidal thoughts, hence the goodbye letters written on his head, and doesn't want to be limited to or by those thoughts alone.

At least I'm kind of hoping that is what it is, because otherwise you most definitely ARE your thoughts and character.

I guess it is good art since it has made us think about this.

On phone, but yes. I'd like to see the essays the photographed people wrote to accompany the images. Especially the depressed person, the amputee, the Holocaust survivor, and the veteran. These were the most poignant images in the grouping in the vignette

xanadian: "What I Be" is only offending my inner Grammar Nazi.  Everything else is copacetic.

If we assume that the author meant this in the AAVE sense, it actually has a distinct meaning. The construct is called the "habitual be," and is usually explained as expressing consistent habits. For example, if I showed you a picture of Elmo eating cookies and Cookie Monster sleeping, Elmo is eating cookies, but Cookie Monster be eating cookies (even though he isn't eating anything in that picture).

But the actual meaning can be a little broader than that. To some extent, it can also be used to designate the essential nature of something. I think that's the intended sentiment here. The mentally ill person apparently wrote a "goodbye letter" at some point, but you shouldn't say "he be trying to kill himself." "She be purging" does not describe the eating disorder sufferer. The RPG player has a character, but it's not right to say "he be in character." And so on, and so forth.

i'd go with the guy using "what i be" specifically because the point is saying the pictures represent "what i am" IS incorrect.  as far as your comment, given that this was a sampling, the "portraying situations as equal" is rather unfair...  it sounded like the unifying theme was simply people opening up about their deepest secrets, deepest pain, deepest frustrations, things people feel ashamed of, things people feel judged for, inadequacies, etc... maybe pointing out things like "even though YOU are pretty sure the thunder-thighs girl doesn't have anything of the sort, SHE doesn't believe you"

it's definitely an interesting concept, and i'd agree that as it does convey a very strong message about the human condition, and (should) make you think more about the people around you every day, it can qualify as "art", or at least somewhere in the "art&literature" spectrum if you include the essays.

Buddy Cianci found this out the hard way on September 12, 2001.

Stuff like that happens a lot, actually.  Hell, my friend saw the inside of a barrel of an FBI rifle the day they caught Dzhokhar Tsarnaev because someone thought he looked like him during that time when they thought he was on the run.
