If this guy honestly thinks he has a chance in Hell of being President in 2016, he should stop talking. Now. But of course, he can't do that, so yet another Derpist will fall by the wayside, once the GOP Primaries get going.

Why do people equate freedom with the idea of being able to act without facing consequence from the government?

The Death cult problem eventually solves itself because the cultists eventually commit suicide.

I'll settle for political suicide.  Still might happen.

I just can't imagine someone really playing the long con like that. It's not like he could just show up one day spewing words of "freedom" and be believed. It takes years and years of reputation building and networking, so why would you do that with positions you don't believe?

He probably doesn't mean half the things he says (like most politicians) but even smart, well educated people can have really dumb ideas. I think he really does think the IRS is theft.

I am curious, though, how would abolishing the IRS help income inequality? The right is all about pointing out the 47% freeloaders who don't pay federal income tax, and how redistributing the wealth is class warfare and evil. So by what logic could abolishing the IRS possibly reduce income inequality?

I think he'd sincerely like to set himself up as Supreme Leader. Then the Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern. The Emperor will dissolve the council permanently and the last remnants of the Old Republic will be swept away forever.

More "trickle-down" nonsense, I suspect.  If it weren't for regulations and the IRS, the wealthy would just be handing out cash.

I'll tell you a quick story about how Ted got elected in the first place.

David Dewhurst was the clear frontrunner for the race to replace Hutchison as Senator. He was doing well in the polls and had everything gone as it was supposed to, he would have been a shoo-in. Cruz was a candidate, but he was pretty much unknown and performing dismally in the polls.

Unfortunately, the Texas redistricting lawsuit happened. Because they couldn't agree on interim maps to use while that lawsuit was going on, the Texas GOP primary got pushed back a few months, to May. This gave Cruz the shot he needed. He doubled down on derp and went into full-on Tea Party mode. When the primary rolled around, he trounced Dewhurst and took the GOP candidacy on to face a Democratic challenger who's name no one could remember.

That's why Cruz was elected.

Give me your take on "Promise Zones". Compare and contrast to "Empowerment Zones", "Enterprise Zones" and the  "National Revitalization Initiative".

Trivia Jockey: Abolish the IRS, huh?  How do you think you'll collect taxes without the IRS?

In the case of the Fair Tax the answer is:

Retail businesses collect the tax from the consumer, just as state sales tax systems already do in 45 states; the FairTax is simply an additional line on the current sales tax reporting form. Retailers simply collect the tax and send it to the state taxing authority. All businesses serving as collection agents receive a fee for collection, and the states also receive a collection fee. The tax revenues from the states are then sent to the U.S. Treasury.

Let's find out by asking him to no longer take a paycheck from the government.

Which, in and of itself, is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. The specific things reinforced or punished may be good or bad, depending, but the act of using some form of authority to encourage/discourage behavior is what everyone does, from governments and the citizens to employers and employees to parents and children.

Can't help but note that while your observation contains a kernel of truth, it appears not to answer the core question posed by Trivia Jockey, namely:

How do you think you'll collect taxes without the IRS?

A government does need income to function after all.

We could make individual Congressmen do it. Starting with Ted Cruz. He can collect taxes from all 150 million or so taxpayers.

Well, I think a Cruz would "argue" that if we reduced government, it wouldn't cost as much to operate and would therefore require less (or maybe no) IRS at all.

But, you reach a certain limit.  We can't eliminate all of government nor its operating costs.  To argue we should eliminate the IRS is as stupid, extreme, and naive as saying the government should control and/or own everything.

In short, Cruz is an extreme wingnut.

Work for what, exactly? They don't reduce the deficit and they don't stimulate the economy unless they are targeted to the middle class.

Ted Cruz is a lunatic. People that support Cruz are either crazy or stupid or, possibly, both. The fact that anyone thinks this asshole is a potential contender for the Presidency is farking creepy.
