Double standards.

Man has 3/4 of a foot, women line up around the block.

Ah.  Someone has never been so drunk that just arriving at home is good enough.  Even if you are still outside and it's 10 below. I'm home.  I'll just sit down for a moment and...  zzzzzzzz.

Had a friend who drove back to his apartment quite drunk, opened the car door, put one foot on the ground and went to sleep.  He woke up eight or nine hours later with one foot on the ground and a dead car battery.

You know, reading the Fark headline I was assuming it was about someone self-amputating. This is just sorta "passed out drunk," which isn't really all that incredible. It just happened to be cold weather.
Sucks for the girl, but at least she's still alive.

I love the original Grimms.  Especially the ending of Snow White.

Indeed! Have you read Gaiman's "Snow, Glass, Apples?"

As to TFA, I am shocked this girl survived in that weather for nine hours with what seems like fairly minimal damage. I guess it is proably because she was fairly warmly dressed and dry (in the sense of not being immersed in cold water, not in the sense of sobriety, obviously)?

I have not read that...I'll add it to my list of books to get to immediately.  I'm embarrassingly behind on my reading, so many books, only so much time....I've always enjoyed the original "fairy tales" rather than the saccharine sanitized things that pass for them today.

But back on topic, the girl is incredibly lucky, despite her injuries.  I'm glad she survived with no more extensive damage than she has since she really wasn't dressed all that well for it.  (see my link above to an earlier article if you'd like)

"Snow, Glass" is a short story. I hear you about being behind on reading. I adore Grimm's.

I not too up on hypothermia lethality as I'm from New Orleans but I would've thought 9 hours would do it. She is lucky.

Lommel, a sophomore from St. Cloud, had been out with friends on the night of Dec. 6. They dropped her off about midnight at the driveway of the house on Woodland Avenue where she lives. That was next door to the house where passers-by discovered her about 9:30 the next morning, wearing boots, jeans and a sweatshirt, with nothing on her hands. The temperature had dropped to 17 below zero that night.

I was raised to wait until my passenger got the front door open/into the house, especially at night. It is simple  courtesy, shows that you are looking out for the person and would have prevented an incident such as this

Almost right: Drunk at a party, stupid (also drink friends) drove her to her house (actually the neighbors' house) and neither walked her to the door nor even bothered to make sure she got inside. They just dropped her and pulled away.  (From here, been reading about this for weeks.)
