Considering that he studio behind the movie got involved, I'd say that it is, everyone knows it is, and nobody has a legal ground to complain about it being so.

A friend of mine owns a bakery in Chicago. About twenty-some years ago, he was commissioned by WGN in Chicago to make a Bozo the Clown cake to celebrate one of their anniversaries. He baked the cake, delivered it, and then received a letter from WGN's lawyers telling him that if he ever baked another one, he'd be sued for copyright infringement.

Ugh, couldn't someone have just run out to Target and bought her this instead?

Seriously, it's less than $30 and way the hell more durable than the ABS plastic they likely used for that knockoff; plus I think the wings flap or something. This little girl got shafted.

I thought so too, a plastic dragon?  Geez thats going to last a week before it gets stepped on and broken or....
FTFA:"The CSIRO has created a blue 3D titanium dragon and sent it to Sophie's home in Brisbane."
...Nevermind.  Gonna need a tractor to break that thing.

Just because some lawyer sends a letter doesn't mean that the letter sender would win in court.

They wanted to make sure that my friend didn't take their request to make a Bozo cake as implied permission to start making Bozo cakes for other people. Bozo was a very popular character back then and WGN wanted to ensure that they protected their trademarks.

The thing that I think is cool is that they are doing 3D printing with Titanium now.

I hadn't heard of it before this article and it is definitely interesting.

The tech has been around for a while.  It's not much different than using plastic in SLS.  Sprinkle a layer of material, hit with laser, repeat, blow out all the stuff you don't need (that didn't get the lazorbeams).  It just takes a higher powered laser to melt titanium, and the cost of those has decreased.

Rapid prototyping is freaking awesome.

I thought the most important part of that article was this:   "She's saying Australian scientists can do anything."

This girls has been given the gift of wonder in regards to science as well as pride in her country.  I think she can be a future great mind of Australia and can really make a difference.  I hope she is encouraged to keep her views like this.  It's awesome and how we get better.

You go, Australia!
