That seriously sucks. They have so many characters that they've developed and I'd like to see their stories of that era further told. Al, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Arnold Rothstein.

I could never get into it, which was a shame because I really liked Deadwood and Rome.  Now that Treme has ended (another one I really liked) and I've lost interest in True Blood, I'm not sure whether it's worth keeping HBO just for GoT.

Maybe one of their new series will click with me.  I'd like to see the, try their hand ad sci-fi.

I still appreciate the show, but I don't think it ever recovered from killing Jimmy. The first two seasons of that show... man, couldn't WAIT to see the next episode. Had to force myself to finish season 3, haven't even bothered with 4 yet.

Not sad at all. Killing off Jimmy pretty much killed that show for me. It would have been interesting if Nucky was someone who didn't get his hands dirty but Winter obviously didn't have confidence in that original premise and turned Nucky into a gangster pretty quick.

Expensive production values. Big name star power in Buscemi. A story that has a limited shelf life as far as the time period goes (prohibition is going to end soon). Yeah, I can see it ending. 12 episodes are enough to tie it all up ending with either with the jailing or death of Buscemi. Most of the other characters are based upon historic figures so their story has already been told. As long as it doesn't end wi...

The reason he died at the end of season 2 was because the writers/staff were having problems with the actor (Michael Pitt). The had initially sketched out a storyline wherein he and his wife moved and lived in New York. A similar set of issues is why they killed off Paz de la Huerta's character. The only difference is that she was apparently insane and the on the set stories that came out are surreal.

And that's a shame. My grandfather knew the real Nucky Johnson (He'd first met him when my great grandfather was Mayor of Hammonton), and said he was one of those people who could sell ice to Eskimoes, and sand to an Arab.

Yeah, I'd heard that about the actor. Shame though, cause he made that show IMO. I don't feel like Boardwalk Empire has the Game of Thrones magic formula... i.e., you can kill off a major character, but all the other characters are so awesome it doesn't matter. Jimmy was by far the most interesting person on Boardwalk Empire.

The latest season has been over for over a month now. You shouldn't be all that surprised that a B.E. thread has spoilers in it. I can see up to  a couple of days or so but after that all bets are off. Get offa yer butt and watch the DVR if you care all that much about it. If you decide to wait for Netflix to have it so you don't have to pay for HBO, well, spoilers come with that territory.

5 seasons sounds about right for HBO. Much like Six Feet Under or The Wire, they're wrapping things up before the show wears out its welcome.

This sucks.  My favorite show on HBO,  and plenty of fuel for a few more seasons.  HBO does have a ton of great stuff in the pipeline, but losing True Blood and Boardwalk Empire in the same year is definitely going to make for interesting changes.

Still better than the Game of Thrones fanboys who go on every ahow thread just so they can blab spoilers that won't happen on the show for another year.

And no, it's not a pre-requisite to read the books before watching the show.

I don't even know how there could be a fifth season. Nucky has retired to live in the Florida swamps, Chalky is pretty much a nobody now, Mrs. Thompson has got Arnold Rothstein as her new SugarDaddy (oh, you just know that he's gonna bone her), Harrow's dead, and even "Dr." Narcisse is now J Edgar Hoover's shoeshine boy. The only ones who moved up in S4 was Al Capone and General Zod, but they're out in Chicago.

I LOVE this show, because for me it paints a BROAD canvas, but I don't know anyone else who likes it.  What I hear the most is, "it just moves too slow."***

Season 4 moved at a glacier's pace, and I thought it was by far the best season.  Imagine shaking a 2-liter bottle of grape soda for eleven weeks, then unscrewing the cap on week twelve.  That's what season 4 was like.

*** I hear the same thing about Hell on Wheels, another one of my favorites.  But HoW just doesn't have the payoff that B.E. has.

I don't mind that he's gone, because in seasons 1 and 2, whenever I saw him, all I could think was that he's the guy who got to shtup a 23-year-old Eva Green. I'd switch to my Dreamers DVD, masturbate furiously, and fall asleep.

Now I can concentrate on the show.

I was surprised he didn't die in the finale because his historical counterpart got smoked pretty early.

Was also expecting them to have Rothstein killed over his gambling debts because it seemed like they were setting up for that.

In real life, Arnold Rothstein was shot dead in 1928.  I'd like them to retain some sort of historical accuracy.

I am surprised as well.

Who knew there were people still watching commercials?

As for BE, it's time to wrap it up. All the stuff that doesn't involve or affect the folks in AC strikes me as filler. All the Chicago stuff just goes to establishing Capone. But his story is so well known, so why bother?

Yeah, I am ok with this, it's time. Love this series, but I don't want to see it slowly slide into something idiotic like so many shows do. Most of the time it's some bean-counter douche in a suit who wants to squeeze as much cash as he can from it.

Case in point - Lost, that show sucked balls.

Good for you HBO, move on to something new, you have a pretty good track record so far.

Well, the 4th season took place in 1924, so there's still room for that.

If they jump to 1928 for season 5, they can be historically accurate on Rothstein's death, the Valentine's Day Massacre, and maybe Capone's imprisonment.

I was bummed when I read the news on twitter from none other than Chalky (Michael K. Williams) himself. I had to google it to confirm it. Still bummed about it now.

While I agree that it is better to end a show before it gets stale, Boardwalk Empire isn't getting stale. There is plenty of room for at least two more seasons after this one. Al Capone is just beginning to show us what a nut he is.

Season four came to a disappointing conclusion. I was hoping Narcisse would meet his end in a satisfying way. Chalky turned out to be a bumbling fark up. Nucky is far from being in control... Most disappointing of all is that Richard Harrow had such a pathetic demise. A guy with his body count getting picked off like that? C'mon. I don't think they gave his exit the proper thought it deserved.

Well, I guess if they're gonna give their characters lame deaths, maybe they should end it.
