(Yahoo)   There are two unshakable pillars of American right-wing politics: 1) Abortion is immoral and evil and so is anyone who facilitates it. 2) Everything Israel does is always moral and good. So when Israel announces it is going to pay for abortions   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 285

The Israelis consider the American Evangelical movement to be useful idiots and nothing more.  They get money and influence over the American government via these southern idiots and all they have to do is simply exist.

Evangelicals believe that they're following a blueprint to summoning Armageddon and bringing Jesus back.  The Israelis just nod their head every so often and continue to play their regional power games.

This isn't the Israel of God's church.  This is a nation brought low by Satan pursuing a domestic agenda contrary to God's desire.  Their decision to embrace abortions will bring the nation low and bring in the End Times.  God's glory will be shown in all his majesty and the true Israel will be rebuilt!  All glory to his name!

. . . nothing changes, because Israel has historically been socially liberal in a lot of ways that break with foundational conservative dogma, but that country only "matters" to American conservatives because Israel fights Muslims and supports Republican politicians.

Bad Translator fixed it:
"Reduce the good bars unshakable principle: 1) abortion is immoral, wrong reasons why people find it), although Israel often poor and unethical behavior, though Israel has announced that it will pay for the abortion."

The abortion thing I kind of get. I think that using abortions as birth control an abhorrent practice, although I think that the Republicans go about trying to reduce or eliminate abortions in the most retarded ways possible. The best way, in my mind, to reduce the number of abortions would be easy access to effective birth control, family planning services (other than abortion, obviously), and proper sex education. But what the hell do I know? I'm sure that doing everything that you can to restrict birth control, defunding places like Planned Parenthood, and teaching "abstinence only" will work out just as well.

The love affair with Israel I really don't get. Especially from a bunch of xenophobic, borderline anti-semitic, Christianity-is-the-only-real-religion, foreign-aid-hating "fiscal conservatives". They do know that Israel is full of Jews who do not believe that Jesus was the son of God, right? I get that there are strategic benefits to having an ally in the region, but I doubt that the rank-and-file Teatard has given the issue that much thought. I just really don't understand it at all.

2014-01-09 12:46:50 PM
If there were hypothetically a safe and reliable way to give the whole country a form of birth control that both parents had to take a pill to temporarily "turn off", it would have a higher ROI than any public works project ever.

You know, I never really thought of it in those terms, "Summoning" Armageddon, but, on reflection you are exactly right that IS what they are more or less trying to do,  create all the conditions that the Bible says will lead to the apocalypse, and in that regard, End-times Evangelicals, are EXACTLY like the mad cultists in a HP Lovecraft novel who try to raise Cthulhu, and basically for the same end.

Short version: Paul's 'revelation' of the endtimes requires that Israel be an actual country.  Problem for Paul: Israel got destroyed shortly after he wrote the Revelation.  It wasn't until relatively recently that Israel was reconstituted into its own country.  So the Evangelicals collectively lost their shiat and now believe that Jesus will be coming back soon because the Revelation states that the whole world will rise up against Israel to destroy her and then Jesus will come back and save her and Rapture up the Jesus Fan Club and they'll have their version of the end of 'This is The End.'

It's simple selfish desire to see their Armageddon fantasies played out in real time.  They don't care a single whit about the Israelis.  But, they're God's Chosen, so they suck up to them in case God is looking down, still.

Stupid and contradictory, but we're talking mythology here, it doesn't have to make sense to have them slavishly dedicated to it.

mod3072: I think that using abortions as birth control an abhorrent practice

I think this idea is stupid and offensive. Abortions are birth control, in the sense that they stop a birth from happening. But they are not used like a pill or a shot or a ring is. In the same way a parking brake will stop your car from moving, but everybody just uses the brakes. It's still nice to have that parking brake there just in case the brakes fail, but we don't claim people are using it as their primary means to stop their car. Because they aren't. And neither are women when it comes to abortion. Because that's stupid, and claiming otherwise is offensive.

That's OK  in these people's mind because  when Israel regains it Biblical borders (which depending on who you believe involves them taking over all of Jordan, and all or parts of Syria and Iran and Saudi Arabia and Egypt)   The the End Times will happen, the herald of which will be 144,000 Jews converting to Christianity (so they can be the "12,000 from every tribe of Israel" that John sees being saved in Revelations, because as awe all know, non-Christians can;t possibly be saved) and more or less ALL the rest of the Jews being wiped out   (current whack-job thinking is that Iran (Magog) nukes Israel).

I don't see a major problem for US fundies

They are anti the Jews ("They killed Jeebus")

But pro-Israel bc their End Times narrative requires a huge Armageddon battle, followed by mass conversion of Jews

But that can't happen if Israel isn't there, so support Israel no matter how much hate Jewish race

/gross over-simplification of a complex issue

Mainstream Christian thought from AD 70 to about AD 1900 was that "Israel" in the prophesies of Peter, Paul, and John, referred to "the true church".  And this transition to "Israel of New Testament = Modern Jewish State" seems to have occurred in English speaking countries only.
