The PC is dead. Long live the PC!

/every article on this topic for the past decade.

Until consoles somehow accommodate a modding community, PC gaming will always be superior.

Rev.K: Until consoles somehow accommodate a modding community, PC gaming will always be superior.

The bigger obstacle is that it's too expensive to make a console that can truely compete with a good PC on a power/graphics level.

No single device is an adequate PC replacement all by itself.

And that's the problem. Also, consoles aren't upgradeable. I get new video cards about every two years.

Exactly.

I'm not going to need a PC because I've got a Steambox in the living room?  Not hardly.  I've already got a PS3 in there.  As it is, the wife is playing Last of Us or Bioshock Infinite on the TV and I'm playing Skyrim, Civ or any number of games on the PC with my 27" monitor.  Twice the gaming experience going on at the same time.  If I didn't have a PC to game on, then we'd be fighting over the TV.  And it's cheaper to have a PC and monitor than big screen TV and console.

That was quite an advertisement.

Each has its place in the market.  This is like saying the automobile is going away because of motorcycles.

For most games it doesn't matter a whole lot.  Sports games are more fun on the consoles, IMHO.  But if I'm given the choice between playing FPS games on the PC or on a console, the PC is going to win every time.  Gamepads are simply not precision instruments.

Also, MMOs suck on consoles, and a virtual farkton of people play MMOs.

The PC was the jack of all trades, but master of none.

ROFL.  What the hell?

The thing that tablets and phones and Chromebooks and all this other nonsense have on the PC is convenience.  PCs became popular precisely because they could do everything.  People don't want these new toys because they're more efficient at the tasks they want.  They want these new toys because they're addicted to the technology and need to take it everywhere they go.

PCs are dead? So that means prices are going to bottom out as everyone scrambles to liquidate their stock right? Right?

Yeah I didn't think so.

You know GTA5 isn't on PC right?

if you can mod the shiat out of games on steambox like you can with steam games on glorious master pc, then maybe.

however, since i use a pc anyway, why not get one that can do games?

2014-01-09 01:42:24 PM
There were no big PC announcements at a show like CES? Maybe that's because the PC is now a mature market with only incremental improvements each year? And where a PC bought several years ago is as good as the latest one in almost every area and a ten year old PC is still perfectly useable for 95% of people?

Guess what? The design of a hammer hasn't changed for a hundred years, but millions of people still buy and use them. Saying tablets, phones and consoles have "killed off" the PC is like claiming pocket size Leatherman tools have killed off proper spanners and socket sets.

Wait, so Intel and AMD and NVidia and Dell and HP and Lenovo have all gone out of business?

Nobody has to type anything at work any more?

Cool.

This must be due to all that CLOUD stuff I keep hearing about.

No single device is an adequate PC replacement all by itself. But together, the growing menagerie of devices is making PC ownership less and less necessary for ordinary consumers.

Yeah, why would I want to own one thing that does it all when I could own 10 things.  That's way more convenient.

2014-01-09 01:45:27 PM
Aside from app "gamers" you can't really play games on a tablet, so, yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

I prefer different platforms for differnt uses. I like my PC for strategy and puzzle games and I like consoles for action and sports. I have to start building my new PC soon FrankenPC isnt cutting it anymore.

Okay one more time, yes the salad days of the PC are over. You know the days when it was the only device for doing computing. Now we have laptops, notebooks, Chrome books, and smart phones. Does this mean the PC is dead? No, it means those lesser functions like browsing, emailing, and even casual gaming can be done on those other devices. But understand PC stands for Personal Computer and what is more personal than your dam smart phone? Hell they use the same computing principals if not the same architecture.

Once again we have a writer who does not understand a computer is not just a desktop device, and a personal computer can be as big as a tower to a small as a device that has a 5 inch screen you stick in your pocket. They are all PCs, they are just not all desktop computers.

I'm amazed it took this long into the new year for the first "PC is Dead" article to pop up. I don't want a bunch of different specialty devices, I want a single device that does it all. I have no desire to carry shiat around to do different special tasks that I could do at my PC.

The Steam box thing looks ok, but from what I can tell you can get different versions depending on how powerful you want it to be. Sounds a lot like a PC to me, just for the TV, and I can send the video from my PC to my TV already if I wanted to do that. What happens when the components like video cards and what not for the Steam box are outdated or dies? I'm going to have to send it in to get repaired or upgraded aren't I? I can do that for the PC cheaper and faster on my own than sending it in. I have no problem with consoles, they have their place in the gaming world and people are free to use whichever one they want. I can see why some people would want a Steam box, they get the ability to play PC games on their TV without having to have much in the way of technical knowledge, but I don't want or need it personally.

My farking sex life is deader than the PC.

I'm sure they are fine saving some $4000 on video cards alone. Four titans were needed to push that display setup.

So you plug in a USB console controller to your PC for such games, and PC still wins.

As both a worker and a gamer... you're insane if you think the PC is going to go away. Touchscreens are a neat, fast interface when everything goes right... but I live in the real world, where crap doesn't go right all the time, and I need a keyboard to work around it/fix it/whatever. Aside from that... try playing a pvp game on a console controller v. someone on a keyboard... go for it... tell me how long it takes for you to realize the superiority of keyboard and mouse. Dont get me wrong, I have a 360 controller for my computer, it is neat and has functions, but a keyboard it is not.

Anyways, tech writers who don't know tech have been writing about the demise of the PC for the last twenty years... and PCs have continued leading the way for other tech... basically the neat parts you find in other things come to PCs first, then they find ways to make them smaller, more heat efficient, etc., and they find their way into other toys. The thing is, without the PC, there's no way these other things get developed and pumped into lower priced goods.... much like concept cars, or even just top-end cars that are production proof-of-concepts, you can't just skip steps in tech development and test marketing.

An analogue stick is a poor substitute for a mouse.

To play first person shooters on consoles is to spit in the face of God.

This! As long as there is the ability to mod, PCs will maintain power. Also, you can't program console games on consoles.

This would be closer to correct if you had said that desktop PCs are dead but even then you would be dead wrong.
