Police Bru-......

Dammit. I thought I could complain more about all cops being mindless evil minions for the government and not individualism with their own lives and opinions.....

"I think this shows that we're just people too."

After 30 years on the force that will be pretty unlikely.

He traveled only 3 blocks in the cab.  The cabdriver however, was working with Uber...

That was quite decent of them, but why didn't they stuff him into a cruiser and drive him home themselves?

2014-01-09 01:23:55 PM
Wait until he receives the bill for the cab fare, plus police time.

Probably not an appropriate use of police equipment/time.

Because they're clearly decent on duty cops and they have better things to do than ferry people to and from their traffic ticket court dates and waste taxpayer money.

As of 2010 Lilburn had a population of 11,596. The median age was 36.3. The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 52.7% white (34.3% non-Hispanic white), 24.4% black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.8% Asian Indian, 0.4% other Asian, 5.3% from some other race (0.3% non-Hispanic from some other race) and 2.8% from two or more races. 27.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

I was being a sarcastic asshole, you know how police routinely target "anything but white only" because people only want to believe that.

If it was Winnipeg, he would have received a 30 mile ride directly from the cops.  Of course, this would be to the middle of nowhere outside the city, as opposed to the person's home, and it wouldn't have happened for any court business reason.

Wellon Dowd: That was quite decent of them, but why didn't they stuff him into a cruiser and drive him home themselves?

I'm betting 3 reasons:
1. 30 miles away may be in an entirely different county, but definitely out of their jurisdiction, there could be all kinds of red tape from that.
2. They were on duty at the court house, not on patrol.
3. There may be actual city codes against using the cruisers as personal vehicles, with the exception of an officer going to/from work.

In short, I bet that they would have gotten in serious trouble. Pretty cool, which is nice to hear for a change. These guys would deserve the 'Hero' tag, considering how it's handed out, but some kid a few threads up totally owned it for at least the week.

A whole $80??!?! break out the ticker tape, some cops did $80 worth of good today. Better make a big news article about it.

Lighten up, Francis.  I didn't attack you for what you wrote or mock you in any way. I just put the facts out there for their own sake.

no.  no, most of them don't.  It would have taken a police officer less than an hour to run the man home.  Had it been a child, they would not have stuck the kid in a cab.

When the cops around my town spend a few hours a day at waffle house, a few hours sitting off the road waiting for people to speed, ect, yeah, I believe the cops could have just drove the man home.

but what they did do was pretty decent.

For the record, I'm pretty sure the cops at the courthouse are required to be there, so they would have had to call some other officer in to give him a ride. That's pretty much just like calling a cab, so it's hardly surprising that calling a cab was the first thing they thought of.

Obviously all cops are evil on Fark so this is fake.

Makes you wonder how the cops felt when they realized, as the cab drove off, that they forgot to sodomize the suspect with their nightsticks, taze him in the balls, punch him in the face and shoot him in the chest.

Good for these police officers. I like to encourage this behavior when I can.

I don't want to be That Guy, but it hasn't escaped my attention that the man is "unidentified" but we have the names of every officer who chipped for the cab. My burning question, therefore, is how did the paper find out about it?

By all means, encourage humanity from the boys in blue. "Underpaid policemen do a stranger a solid" is a headline I really, really want to see more of, especially after seeing the culture of my hometown's police force descend into Thunderdome over the course of ten years, under the management of a former Philly cop who loves the camera and bores easily. (He is way long gone; someone replaced him with a human being.)

I don't know whether this particular police department has any marks against it - I'm not assuming - and as far as I'm concerned, no, they didn't owe him a chauffeured ride back to his home, but I'm automatically suspicious of obvious incidents of own-horn-tooting.

Maybe the unidentified man requested that he remain unidentified when he told them, or maybe someone else involved (the cabbie, perhaps) said something.

I'm assuming you've never had the pleasure of riding in the back seat of a police car. Give me a cab every time.

Enough about the cops, already. What about this thirty-mile hike, which (at an average three-mile-per-hour pace) would've taken at least ten hours. That's some fine schedulin' there, Lou.

Wonder what the overall calorie burn was?

I have no sympathy with the way that cops in America act and where our country is headed regarding policing, but this is where I stand up and support my local PD. I've been very happy with the way the police in Lilburn perform their duties, and have let them know this.
For those of you questioning their motives or actions, this is no outlier, they are truly the type of police force that you would want in your town. I'm proud to have this make the news so everyone can see an example of a police force that does the right thing, hopefully other departments will take note.
