Public health officials are particularly concerned about people who binge drink, which the CDC defines as more than four drinks at a sitting for a woman, and five drinks for a man.

Or, known by its more common name: a relaxing afternoon watching football.

Binge drinking is defined as more than five drinks where a glass of wine may contain up to five drinks. Ok.

Reasonably though, I'm probably right on their eight drink per week line even if I assume most of my drinks are 2-3 drinks in one.

2014-01-09 01:03:40 PM
Again, I take issue with their definition of 'binge' drinking. Stretching it out at a drink per hour isn't a binge, it's a pleasant session. This strikes me as the CDC teaming up with whatever shadowy prohibition movement is out there trying to slowly kill all the pleasures in life.

/still anti-smoking, but that's because I value having working lungs far more than living 80+ years.

How very scienticious of you. Do you have some sort of data to actually challenge the findings of health professionals who have performed studies on the matter or is your argument basically "it must be a conspiracy because I don't like what they're telling me"?

If you're going to drink beyond a healthy limit simply because you want to, fine, but you could at least be honest with yourself about it and accept the potential risks associated with that behavior. You don't hear people who go skiing poo-pooing the notion that blunt force trauma to the head in a fall is bad for your health. They just accept that the risk is there and go anyway because it's fun and they're okay with that risk. Why should you view your own hobby and its associated risks differently?

I've got to wonder if something like that is going on. The modern temperance movement seems to have infiltrated the CDC as well as NHSTA and a few other agencies. Hell, even the Navy is on the bandwagon these days with a lot of 'one drink will ruin you for life' types of ads on AFN (which is the only TV you can watch on a ship).

People's tastebuds differ. I REALLY like the taste of wine, craft beer and good liquor with just a little ice and water. I'm not a big fan of sweet things, and fruity drinks give me the horrors. You can make a virgin Mary that I'll drink, but it tastes better with vodka in it.

More than 6 4 3 2 1 0 drinks a day and you're an alcoholic.  Of course you are.  If you deny you are, then that just means you're in denial, and therefore an alcoholic.

This. Goes for all pot and smoking threads, too.

/I LOVE booze, but it's not very healthy. The CDC is there to tell you what's healthy. You can ignore them (I do when it comes to booze and red meat), but don't pretend like they don't know what they're talking about.

Did anyone else RTFA? Subby's trollerific headline has very little to do with what the CDC said about how much drinking is healthy. (Hint: they didn't mention alcoholism at all).

Good for you. I'm such a drunk that I get WAY too many calories just from booze, and I lose my self control over snacking after the second drink.

The Egyptians invented writing, built hundreds of impressive structures, and created civilization. They had beer for breakfast, beer for lunch, beer for dinner, and beer to relax later.

I'll have a beer.

The classification of binge drinking always bothered me.  Let's say you go out from 9-2.  If you have 1 drink an hour you are teetering on the edge of binge drinking...and depending on your weight you are still legally sober.

I'm old now, but when I used to go out there wasn't a single night out we wouldn't do at least 4-5 shots (unless you were the DD).  6 drinks in a night would be taking it (really) easy.

TFA doesn't have anything to do with alcoholism, it's about the level of drinking that becomes unhealthy because it's associated with higher risks of disease and when you should notify your doctor to ensure you're not causing yourself unnecessary problems. Those are two entirely different things. There are many, many people out there who are not addicted to alcohol but are still drinking to an unhealthy extent.

It's just like people who get fat because they eat too much. Just because you shovel four McD's burgers down your gullet every night for dinner and give yourself serious health problems doesn't mean your addicted. It's two different things.
