There is no such thing as plagiarism in art. Taking a classic comic strip and blowing it up counts as art. Taking a published photograph and re-colorizing it counts as art.http://www.theartnewspaper.com/articles/No-longer-appropriate/263 78 The guy took small book colors, made them large paintings and changed the colors. It counts as art, even though he is a schmuck for mooching off of another artist's work. He could have been respectful and asked first.

You do realize those "small book covers" were actually large paintings to begin with?

Yes. That's the point if the piece. Its a commentary on the futility of trying to run from destiny. No matter how far you flee you end up where you began.

Well, sure, except for established international law defining it. There's also no such thing as a speed limit, the sign certainly doesn't stop my car from going above the posted number.

Don't be a farking goober.

Yeah right. A party would never be so partisan as to excuse such behavior just to keep power.

Some people just deserve to get punched in the junk. With a sledge hammer. That's attached to the front of a dump truck.

Meanwhile the artist who did the Obama HOPE poster (Shepard Fairey) was sued by the AP because he used an AP photo as the basis for the poster.

While the HOPE poster is clearly a derivative work, the paintings are clearly copies.

I guess the lesson here is that if you are going to do it, do it a lot of times.

Is there really a market for $5.7 million sci-fi paintings?

Now you are just being silly, an African dump truck can't carry a sledgehammer , and besides , they are not migratory

So this guy would be entirely cool with it if some third party took high res scans of his entire body of work, tweaked the least significant byte of each pixel, and resold them (with a nod to him in the title, of course), right?

You could portray them as an expression of opinion on the works of Glenn Brown.

Fark that - he could've been respectful and cut the original artists (or their estates) in for part of the ridiculous profit he's making by copying their works. That's the real shame here. It's bad enough that this buttmunch is standing on the shoulders of others, but he's also making millions doing it when those other artists barely made anything for their original works.

Glenn Brown is a thief, plain and simple.

Laws against plagiarism are just another form of oppressive DRM.

Saying "there is no such thing as plagiarism in art" is wrong on a lot of levels.  I'm not even sure where to begin.

Not only is this guy a millionaire, but some other millionaire thought this work deserved millions of dollars. That sounds like science-fiction.

2014-01-09 01:37:07 PM
So, if someone were to copy this guy's paintings, glue a couple things on them, show them in a gallery, and make millions, I am sure the "artist" in this story wouldn't make a peep.

I don't see how this is different than a musical artist covering another musician's song.

2014-01-10 08:14:28 PM
So I guess everyone who is quick to judge did not realize that

A) the artist asked permission use the original art
B) the artist didn't ,make $5.7 million on it. The guy who bought it made the money after he auctioned it.
