doglover: That's not Niagara, that's the US side.

They're both Niagara Falls.  This is the American Falls, the other is the Horseshoe Falls. Put them together = Niagara Falls.

Holy smokes!  There's even cities called Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York, too!

/the more you know...

Nothing captures the majesty and grandeur of a frozen waterfall like a still photo.

The One True TheDavid: gregory311: capt.hollister: Of course, it's the American falls that are frozen. Everyone knows Americans can't handle winter.

Speaking of falls, I loved seeing Montmorency.

That's nothing. I almost caught herpes from a chick who got it on with the drummer in Jane's Addiction.

How does one "almost" catch herpes? :-)

This reminds me of the time back in '38 when an ice jam on the Niagara River took out the Honeymoon Bridge.

\totally different weather event but cool story about a bridge.

No. Horseshoe is Niagara Falls. The American side is just a waterfall.

No. I happen to live here.

Let me help you:

Niagara Falls  is the collective name for threewaterfalls that straddlethe international border betweenCanada and theUnited States; more specifically, between theprovince ofOntario and thestate ofNew York. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge.

From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, theAmerican Falls and theBridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side, separated byGoat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also located on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls byLuna Island. The international boundary line was originally drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has long been in dispute due to natural erosion and construction.

This is not a strange phenomenon.  The falls ice up every single winter.  Cuz it's winter, and it gets cold, and there's lots of water and mist to freeze up.
