Why would I need an ice axe to go over the falls?

Nothing captures the majesty and grandeur of a frozen waterfall like a still photo.

I triple dog dare anyone to go over the falls in a barrel while licking a pole.

doglover: That's not Niagara, that's the US side.

They're both Niagara Falls.  This is the American Falls, the other is the Horseshoe Falls. Put them together = Niagara Falls.

Holy smokes!  There's even cities called Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York, too!

/the more you know...

This is not a strange phenomenon.  The falls ice up every single winter.  Cuz it's winter, and it gets cold, and there's lots of water and mist to freeze up.

gregory311: They're both Niagara Falls

No. Horseshoe is Niagara Falls. The American side is just a waterfall.

No. I happen to live here.

Let me help you:

Niagara Falls  is the collective name for threewaterfalls that straddlethe international border betweenCanada and theUnited States; more specifically, between theprovince ofOntario and thestate ofNew York. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge.

From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, theAmerican Falls and theBridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side, separated byGoat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also located on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls byLuna Island. The international boundary line was originally drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has long been in dispute due to natural erosion and construction.

It depends whether you want your first time over the falls to be your last time over the falls.

I've climbed up a number of frozen waterfalls, but my interest in climbing down one is slim to none.

Serious question: is it because of the leverage and not being able to really see where you are placing your feet?

That I will agree with.

Niagara Falls, USA is a dump.

I live right by, and drive over the Delaware river every day.  It's no Niagra Falls, by any stretch.  But still, it is amazing to see so much ice on the river.  It's coming from the north and totally clogging and damming up around the brides in Trenton.  It's so bad that the river is actually spilling over it's banks into the city.

It's pretty wild.

The ice on the upper Niagara River is really farked right now - all the ice went over the boom outside of Buffalo during this week's snow.  Add in 50 degree temps scheduled for this weekend and you, sir, got yerself some serious flooding, there, sir.

To be fair, it's like a farking orgy of waterfall goodness anywhere else in the world.

It just happens to be located less than 700 meters away from something 10,000 times more interesting.

Agreed. Took a trip up to see the Falls back in the 90's...the Canadian side was beautifully manicured, gorgeous scenery and ambience. Drove over to the American side, and there was trash on the ground, and just generally looked disused.

This reminds me of the time back in '38 when an ice jam on the Niagara River took out the Honeymoon Bridge.

\totally different weather event but cool story about a bridge.

But if it looked disused how did the trash get there? Walked by itself, did it?

And of course the Canadian side is better in every way: socialism!
