I caught a Gerard Butler movie called "Mavericks" or something recently. I had no idea he had ever been in a surfing movie and found this one to be rather enjoyable.

They already re-made point break.

old joke is old, but true.

the original holds up very well as a kick-ass action movie. It hasn't aged a day.   a re-make is not needed.

never.

never will that film see the light of day.

best to hope for is a gritty re-boot.  GB3 with the original cast would be sad, GB reboot trying to be comedy would never reach the highs of the original.

I think it's an age joke, though Swayze was around 38~39 years old when the original Point Break was made, and Butler is currently 44. Not really that large of an age difference. If Swayze had been 25 when making Point Break, the joke might make more sense.

I'll watch Gerard Butler in pretty much anything. Easy on the eyes, and he's just a likable fella.

So is this another one of those threads where we pretend a crappy movie from the 80s was the absolute pinnacle of cinematic perfection and couldn't possibly be remade because reasons?

Ya this is that thread. Point Break was a cheesy action flick. Not Citizen Kane. It can easily be remade and be just as cheesy and stupid as the original.

Then in 30 years or so your kids will be registering their disgust on the Internet they're remaking Point Break with Butler and LeBouf.

/"oh man they can't remake that movie it's a classic!"

I think the point is more that they should be remaking movies that were good concepts but flawed in execution.

Would you rather see a remake of:
Tombstone or
Star Wars Ep I

Home Alone or
Waterworld

Jurassic Park or
Godfather III

How about one that was done. Which one was the awesome concept with the flawed execution?:
Total Recall or
Oceans 11

See, as consumers we see it in a different way than movie studio people. They see "well this is a cult classic, it didn't burn the charts at the box office, but it has name recognition and we can squeeze a buck out of it with some bottom of the A-list actor, and lots of web 2.0 and synergy." While we say "remake the 100s of crap movies that had great fell flat. If you fail no one will care, if you pull it off, you'll be sitting on a classic"

Never saw the movie but he developed a Vicodin addition after hurting his back filming that movie. Now after his painkiller rehab he's going back to make a movie about surfing bank robbers. Not the smartest career move if you ask me. It's about as smart as remaking Pointe Break in the first place.

Pretty much this - Point Break was a downright shiatty movie. If we are remaking more shiatty early 90s/late 80s films, why not another shiatty Lost Boys, Die Hard or Young Guns?

A remake won't work, for any other reason than it is early 90s America thru and thru. The rise of extreme sports, the final great last gasp of hair metal, Gary Busey pre-brain damage.

Then, there's the plot. The rookie cop that gets in too deep, the burned-out vet that tries to help him, the crazy half-criminal girlfriend, and the ultra charismatic villain that leads a group of seemingly brain dead farkups that turn out to be expert criminals.

Those elements are too cliche now, but in 1991, they were a perfect storm of action filmmaking. There's a reason Kathryn Bigelow is critically acclaimed now. She elevated that movie to something far greater than the source material.

That was back when she was married to, and was a protege of James Cameron. Back in the late 80s-early 90s, that was a pretty good person to have on standby to give notes.

you may not like the film, but the fact is that Point Break is a damn near timeless action film and is actually good enough to not need a remake, at least now.  Someone above said it best - paraphrasing, "remake crap and try again.  Don't remake GOOD movies that actually hold up."

there is no way in hell a remake of Point Break will be as good as the original.

Sure it can. It'll almost certainly be a PG-13 instead of an R so more people can see it! Yay!

Point Break was just a crappy, disposable action movie (mostly because of that perennial plank of wood named Keanu) with some interesting bits.  I don't care if it's remade or not.

"While we say "remake the 100s of crap movies that had great fell flat. If you fail no one will care, if you pull it off, you'll be sitting on a classic"   "

Well fine, but a good question is whether that has EVER happened, where a craptastic movie was remade into a really good one.  I'm sure people will be able to name one or two but I can't think of any at the moment.

the classic film, "The Wizard of Oz" starring Judy Garland was a remake.
the classic film, "The Ten Commandments" starring Charlton Heston was a remake.
the classic horror film, "The Thing" starring Kurt Russell was a remake.
the classic film, "True Grit" starring the dude was a remake.
the classic horror film, "The Fly" starring Jeff Goldblum was a remake.

the originals of all of those films are unabashed crap.

2014-01-10 10:42:04 AM
Thank you, frep, though I might disagree with one or two of those.

Hey, I thought of one, too.  D.O.A. with Dennis Quaid was pretty entertaining movie (but not a classic or anything).

I went back and tried to watch the "classic" original, and it was just terrible, terrible.  The acting was really bad and broad and the pacing was so slow as to be unbearable.  I don't think I got past the first 1/2 hour.

2014-01-10 11:16:00 AM

Far Cough: Thank you, frep, though I might disagree with one or two of those.

which ones?   Because all of those films are classics.

people may eviscerate me for this one, but I'd include the new "Carrie" film as well.  I liked the original Sissy Spacek film ok, but the new one removes any need for me to ever watch that film again.  The new film destroys the original.

Also, people hated it, but if we are being honest, the Total Recall remake is really really good and taken as a stand alone movie is a fantastic movie.  It doesn't destroy the original classic, but damn I was impressed.
