He talked himself right in to a fine. All he had to say was nothing or nope.

People are such assholes tho. Calling the cops on your neighbor, someone you have to live next to for the conceivable future over snow ? Really ?

My neighbors would have to be doing something seriously reckless for me to call the cops on them and even then i would hesitate.

I would think the "hero" tag would have been more appropriate.    Lazy Dbags who toss thier snow into the street are creating a safety issue for everyone else.

Doesnt illicit snow shoveling require a few whacks of a nightstick to the head.  I know it's not tase worthy but still.

The city hand't plowed yet, so the snow was going to get cleared anyway. It was only the snow at the end of his driveway, so it probably wasn't enough to obstruct traffic. And, knowing Peoria, his street probably didn't get plowed for 48 hours.

The neighbor who called the police about it is a vindictive asshole. End of story.

Is it just the residual snow bank from the plow that everyone has to deal with then get over yourself skippy... or if they are they using your driveway as a dumping ground I'd call the DPW and nicely discuss this, and keep folowing up. Usually in smaller towns you will get some resolution, if you lice in a major city, yea you're farked.

2014-01-09 09:42:48 AM
So the guy's a jerk that left a "mound" of snow in the street after shoveling his driveway? And the size of the fine, while not outrageous, has obviously gotten his attention. Bet he doesn't shovel snow into the street in the future. It sounds like exactly the way fines are supposed to work.

2014-01-09 09:42:49 AM
I used to live in Peoria. That's a part of town where the houses are full of rich people who can't stand to have any noise, traffic, or disturbances ruining their otherwise perfect day, and will call the cops for just about any little nuisance, and the cops will respond because (a) they have to and (b) they have nothing better to do to justify their salaries than hand out meaningless tickets. You probably know the sort.

OK, what if you are living on one of those pie-shaped lots around the outside of a bend in the road or in a cul-de-sac where there is a very small property frontage and limited space to put the snow?

Also, some idiot planners in the town where I live had the brilliant idea to have a fireplug located 3 feet from the send of my driveway. That's one side I cannot shovel my snow to.

Shared driveways are also a pain for shoveling snow, Obviously, the idiot city planner who put those in my subdivision must have originally lived in Texas, or is just plain retarded.

People who have all this wondrous 'advice' about shoveling snow etiquette obviously don't have to deal with these less than ideal situations (and neighbors!).

Businesses hire plow jockeys to clear the parking lots and driveways (revenue generating) areas and create compacted piles of snow along the property lines and sidewalks. Walkers have a choice of cli8mbing a snow pile or walking in the street and hope that drivers do not hit them. This is in addition to the plowing of road snow onto the sidewalks and sometimes covering fire hydrants.

cgraves67: The neighbor who called the police about it is a vindictive asshole. End of story.

It can have a big impact on people. I got the cops called on me once and actually walked across the street to introduce myself and apologize. I gave the guy my phone number and asked him to please call me if I was ever disturbing him in any way.

The cop TOLD me he was the neighbor who called, but the guy denied it. I actually had a few vivid fantasies about burning the guys house down. I am not saying that I am a badass or that I would actually do it, I am just saying that some people take that stuff WAY too personally...myself included.

Don't be a dick.

Yeah, I've got one of those farktards in my neighbourhood as well. Street is plowed bare until you get to his house where he's created an icy speed bump. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet but I'm told the excuse he tenders is that the "salt will damage his lawn". I noticed he got TP'ed twice around Halloween so I'm guessing he's got some other idiosyncrasies that endear him to those who have to directly deal with his bullshiat.

Don't throw the snow onto the street.  Yes, if your entire frontage of your property consists of just the width of the driveway (which I doubt ) you have to make sure the snow gets places somewhere other than the street. Shared driveway? Work it out with the neighbror.  This isn't rocket science.  If you have a problem you should talk with your city or town and change the rules, not biatch to DM on FARK.

Rich people problems. Last time it snowed they came through with a truck and threw down some sand a week after the storm. Plows? Hah, no. Those are for the one highway and church parking lots. It's not like I live in a shiatty neighborhood, they just don't touch the side streets around here.

And safety issues? Are you kidding me? From a pile of snow on an otherwise plowed street? Either stop driving like a maniac in residential areas or suck it the hell up, you whiners.

Am I the only one who tends to remove snow from the street so it isn't such a huge pile when the plow comes by a week later? I'm sure it's illegal too for whatever reason.

My next door neighbor used to have her son-in-law plow out her driveway with a big old truck plow.  He'd then proceed ram it into the curb across the street ripping up the grass in the process.  She seemed confused as to why that wasn't ok.

How much of a raging adolescent do you have to be to not understand basic street plowing mechanics by the time you own your own home with a driveway.

I had a retired neighbor throw a tantrum once at a plow driver, so he just left our street half-done. Luckily the plow came back later and finished, after the cops had talked some sense into the cranky old coot.

2014-01-09 04:30:28 PM
This story reminds me how much I hate shoveling snow. I used to live on a busy one way street. We essentially shared a drive way with the neighbor and on the other side of the drive way was a giant tree. The driveway it self was very steep and had a retaining wall on the side not shared with the neighbor. This left essentially no place to put the snow. I would shuffle up and down my dangerously steep and slippy drive way, shoveling snow and carrying it to one of two locations I could actually pile it. By the end of the season, we had to mountains of snow that would hang around for while. The worst was shoveling the end of the drive way where the plow would pile the snow. The street was busy so that snow would be absolutely nasty and usually extra wet and heavy. Damn snow.

/The guy shouldn't have shoveled snow in the street
//The neighbor is a dick and will probably get the favor returned in the future

2014-01-09 07:27:37 PM

Doubleodoug: Am I the only one who tends to remove snow from the street so it isn't such a huge pile when the plow comes by a week later? I'm sure it's illegal too for whatever reason.

I have shoveled the shoulder of road, so when the plow came along, his plow would be clean by the time he reached my driveway and had no snow to dump in my driveway.  It worked like a charm.

This time around, I didn't bother, however we did shovel the driveway real well and I now drive a large four wheel drive.  A neighbor a few doors down, did not shovel their driveway, only to not be able to get out at all when the plow came by.  I learned a lot about my neighbor by the method by which they got out.  They stubbornly stuck to the hit the gas till it breaks loose method.  I'm funny, I have used a shovel, cat litter, and even just pulling back into the driveway for a running start, but try something that looks like you have some problem solving skills.

When I mean stubborn, I mean they spent over a half an hour just hitting the gas.

2014-01-09 08:08:10 PM
Get your moneys worth... ask for a trial by jury, and demand they produce the physical evidence of the alleged illicit shovelling.
