How did I miss that?

Didn't Winfield choosing a Padres cap finally motivate the Hall to take that decision away from the inductee?

Ehhh missed Sparky but he's a manager so that don't count!

No it was Nolan since he only played 5 years with the rangers and pissed off Astros fans at the time. Are there any Astros fans left?

I thought it was the rumor (mentioned in TFA) that Wade Boggs tried to put it in his contract. Jose Canseco, too.

Winfield had the Padres cap assigned to him, and I'm sure he's happy with the decision, what with that whole "Steinbrenner trying to destroy him" thing.

DAMMIT! I got Boggs wrong because I thought they made that change after he went in.

The way I understand it: MLB offers the player a choice, but retains refusal rights in case of total stupidity. Winfield chose the Padres 1) because they launched his career without making him muck about in the minors, and 2) they offered him a retired number and front-office job. MLB, not being total pricks and knowing about his history with Steinbrenner, agreed.

/I saw Winfield play in a Padre uniform when I was just a wee BKITUling.

Well it was a rumor, which boggs denied but I do remember the stink over the rumor then combined with the butt hurt Astros fans they started to 'push' them to a team.

Not a bad idea, though I think even the Seattle Pilots caps were better than the ones the Montreal Expos had to wear:

The Pilots caps were dumb, but the Expos caps looked like something a trained seal would spin on his nose in an aquarium show at a third-rate amusement park.  Though the Pilots do have the added embarrassment factor of being such a pathetic franchise that it only existed for one year (and then got bought out by a group led by Bud Selig, of all people), so maybe that really is the better choice.

It took me 20 years of baseball life to figure out the Montreal hat logo was an "M" and not "elb"...

The logo was bad enough, but add to that the loud color scheme of the cap itself, and it all adds up to the worst baseball cap of the modern era.  Even without the bad logo, that cap looked like something a little kid would've worn in the 1930s with a propeller on top.

That's okay. Montreal is a pretty odd place compared to the typical MLB city, so they somehow made the look work. It never would have been any good in the States, though.

It's a franchise that started with one of their star players being  a guy named like he was a cage-dancer in a gay disco.

I miss the Expos. Cheap seats, and a surprising number of really hot women at the games.

The HOF always had the right to decide what cap, but until recently they always went with the players wishes.

There were issues around the year 2000. Notable events were Winfield's choice of cap and rumours that Bogg's was having it in his contact. There were rumours that agreements for choosing a team were more common, but I have never heard anyone other than Boggs specified.

Since 2000 or so the policy has changed. I am sure they still take the players wishes are still taken into account, but it it isn't the final decision.

Gulper Eel: I miss the Expos. Cheap seats, and a surprising number of really hot women at the games.

I found myself in Montreal for a few days the last season before they moved to Washington, and I thought I would take in a game at Olympic Stadium for the hell of it, having never been to one before (or since).  There couldn't have been much more than 5,000 other people in the stands that night.  The Expos lost, of course, to the Cubs--the Cubs, of all teams--but nobody seemed to care much.  In fairness, though, Maddux was pitching for the Cubs that day, so it wasn't really a fair fight.

And yeah, among those 5,000 or so people, there was a truly disproportionate number of hot women in attendance.  But of course one could probably say that about pretty much any gathering of people in Montreal in which females are in attendance.   That city is undoubtedly on the short list of North American cities with the greatest per capita numbers of hot women.

C'mon, how can you miss Hunter's "no logo"? If they give a weird random-seeming choice, then pick it!

If they would've had it as an option for everyone, though, I bet a lot of people would've gotten more wrong.

/got Anderson and Carew wrong (Carew because I was too lazy to read the dates and only remember him as an Angel)

If it was an option for everyone, I would guess virtually everyone gets Hunter wrong and a few people pick it randomly.

I got most wrong because I never really followed the sport as a whole, just the Jays and playoffs. There were maybe 4 or 5 I actually knew. Winfield and Molitor, obviously from Jays connections (hopefully with Alomar in people can quit whining about Molitor) and Gary Carter I knew as the Expo in the HOF (and as I recall there was some controversy that they gave him the Expos cap just to have someone in the Hall with one).

Honestly, I guessed most people and just put the team I associate them with. And I'd read Catfish's autobiography but didn't remember the no logo part...but it's just a rule of tests that if they put something like that in there, you have to believe it's for a reason.

I didn't even see that it was a choice.  I don't remember any controversy about it, but I just figured that since the majority of his best days (back-to-back World Series titles, pitched MLB's first perfect game in several years, etc.) were with the A's as opposed to the Yanks, and because he also came up in the A's organization and he didn't seem as happy in the Yankees organization, I assumed he would've chosen to go in as a member of the A's and I picked the A's without even looking at any other choices.

Well, he had back-to-back titles with the Yankees, too. (Though the A's went back-to-back-to-back).

/he was also the first real free agent and chose to leave Oakland for the Yankees

Yeah. Must've been a hell of a time playing for Charlie O. Finley AND Steinbrenner.

He and Jackson deserve to be in the HoF just for dealing with that.
