Is he really still trying to push the "traffic study" angle?

He's saying he thought it was a traffic study, because Baroni told him it was a traffic study.  Not saying it was a traffic study, just saying that's what he thought it was at the time.

The thing is, he didn't even throw them under the bus the right way.

What he said: "This behavior is not representative of me or my administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions."

The very least he should have said: "This behavior is not representative of me or my administration in any way, and I have asked for Bridget Anne Kelly's resignation, effective immediately."

"Words can't begin to express my disappointment. What Bridget did is anathema to everything I stand for, and, I thought that Bridget shared those values. I am heartbroken to discovery that she did not. And so, it is with great sadness that I must now eat her."

Screw firing them or letting them resign. If it can be proven they did this as a pressure or punishment tactic, then they should be prosecuted. If a regular person disrupted traffic on a major highway artery they'd be branded terrorists.

All in all I really don't see him running in 2016, truth be told I don't exactly see it in Hillary either.  Sure both might come out and say they may run or they might even do it but not advance, but I don't think we will see a Clinton vs Christie battle in 2016.  Simply put the spot light has been on them before the results of the last election.  I don't really see either of them putting up with that until then.  Having that kind of attention will really wear somebody down and that is without the work of actually running.

This. Christie is smart enough. What will happen is something like this.

"Hey look, I know you'll take some heat for this, but don't worry. I made some phone calls, and my friends will hook you up with a job that will pay you even better than this one does. Of course, that's assuming you don't do something silly like talk to the press."

I'm with whoever said that there was no way this went down without his knowledge and OK. Why would staffers take it on themselves to do something like this, then brag about it in the most indiscreet way? And come to think of it, if they had done something so egregious without Christie's knowledge, they would have been fired as soon as this hit the headlines. Before. As soon as 142 characters about it hit Twitter.

C'mon, you know the first primary debate will have to have some truly insane candidates to balance out the ones who are just idiots.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Vets were forced off an open mall. Which vets? When? What mall? This is the sort of information it is customary to provide for the people with whom you are trying to communicate.

From: POTUS

-Time for some closed national parks.

From: Secretary of the Interior

-I feel badly about the retired vets.

If I learned anything in my travels in the Internet, it's this:

"Homicide" is not a charge.  It's just legalese for "unnatural death".  So a suicide would a form of homicide.

The charges would be voluntary/involuntary manslaughter or murder .. which comes down to "intent" and malice.

IANAL, but my guess, if appropriate would be involuntary manslaughter.

No wars, heaven forbid, and she will leave office having spent 8 years reducing unemployment, raising minimum wages to get the poor off public assistance -- a hidden corporate welfare program, fixing the potholes, etc., and paying for it all with about a 50% cut to the defense budget.

I was around during the post-Viet Nam draw down, and it wasn't pretty. When Congress gets it in their minds to reduce spending there is only one non-entitlement area that scale of money can come from, and it's the military. They've had a great 20+ year boom, but all good things must come to an end and now it's their turn.

Stone Meadow: RepoManTSM: Stone Meadow: gja: Stone Meadow: After due consideration I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Governor Christie for single-handedly ensuring the election of Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States. Well done sir!

I wonder if she will have them stop mowing the lawn because....natural.

Hillary is no earth-mama...not with the makeup, hairdos and polyester pantsuits. Wanna know what kind of President she'll be? Look at Angela Merkel...careful centrist coalition-building corporatist. No wars, heaven forbid, and she will leave office having spent 8 years reducing unemployment, raising minimum wages to get the poor off public assistance -- a hidden corporate welfare program, fixing the potholes, etc., and paying for it all with about a 50% cut to the defense budget.

I think you really under estimate the military-industrial complex.

Agreed.

When you outspend the next ten nations in combined military spending, you might need to cut back a bit and focus on stuff like education and infrastructure to advance our interests. It's long overdue.

That said, enough with the fat jokes already - they just damage a lot of good arguments about why he is a shiat.

You sound fat.

It's always slightly surprising to me what pols get away with easily and what they have trouble with. Playing politics with public resources is the kind of thing I would expect a big city mayor to be doing pretty much ALL the time. This bridge thing seems kind of petty for a governor's office, but with no sex or money involved, I'd have thought a guy like Christie in a state like NJ might even get away with coming right out and samjacksoning it. "You're gotdamned right I did..."

Then again maybe I don't entirely understand the underlying shenanigans that they're trying to cover up.

2014-01-08 10:52:28 PM
The problem with this kind of scandal is that people can't really know if the governor personally ordered the machine of state to pursue his personal vendetta. The drip, drip, drip of information leading in that direction encourages people to THINK he did.

It's like finding out a used car has a serious flaw the seller tried to keep from you. What else has he been hiding? Best to just cut ties to be safe.

AeAe: LessO2: Witty_Retort: At least nobody died.

Except this woman.

When homicide charges are brought against one of these jokers, someone will roll on Christie.

Calm down, even Dick Wolf or Jack McCoy couldn't make homicide charges stick.  Way too much to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" for homicide.

Take a deep breath and see how things play out.

That would require proving beyond a reasonable doubt that the woman would have lived had the paramedics arrived that about four minutes earlier, as they estimated they would have were it not for the traffic.  Given there probably were no doctors at the scene to testify as to her medical condition four minutes prior to the paramedics arriving (let alone knowing what her vital signs were at the moment), I don't think you can prove, again, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the woman would have lived simply based on the four or so extra minutes.

I'm not saying she would or wouldn't have lived, but I am saying it seems to prove that in a court of law would be an extraordinary thing.

Not trying to find a way out for government slime balls, I just don't think the case can be legally made for homicide, manslaughter or whatever.  Too much reasonable doubt and likely not enough proof.

Okay, but you'll have to fill me in, since all those scores are assigned to her by the several hundred organizations listed, not the other way around.

And please feel free to tell us whom you wish to vote for. No snark here. I'm genuinely curious if you feel she's not progressive enough to vote for -- in which case whom do you think COULD get elected. Or if you think she's too progressive, whom might you vote for among the still standing GOP hopefuls?

Thing is, this defence isn't even plausible

You really want us to believe that your staffers decided they wanted to punish the other guy?

And not because the boss wanted it?

Smacks of desperation that this is the best defence they can come up with at short notice

It is going to be so widely disbelieved that even 'plausible deniability' won't fly in the marketplace

I'm picking a grovelling mea culpa half-assed apology in next few days, particularly if the redacted bits of the emails become public

Somehow I don't think the government shutdown went down like this:

From: POTUS

From: Secretary of the Interior

-I feel badly about the retired vets.

From: POTUS

But who spends more money closing a park, with law enforcement detail than if they just 'left it'?

When a company closes a factory, they don't hire 20 armed security guards to guard the place, they pack up and leave......

Jamming up traffic to carry out a vendetta against someone who refused to endorse you is anything but typical politics. It delayed school buses and slowed down ambulances, endangering the lives of citizens.

Now you may believe Christie wasn't involved. He had no knowledge. He was still

1. Joking about the incident
2. Supporting the lie that the cause was a traffic study
3. Calling it no big deal
4. Claiming his staff had nothing to do with it

And maybe you still believe Christie had no knowledge, despite the fact that

1. His Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly ordered the lane closures
2. His port authority appointed executive (and high school buddy with no transportation experience) David Wildstein replied "Got it", implying this plan had been discussed earlier
3. They both joked about the mayor's desperate pleas for help, and about kids being late for school (but they were the kids of voters of Democratic opponent Buono - har har!)
4. His PA Chairman David Samson being knowledgeable, and lying about what happened
5. His press secretary Michael Dewniak being knowledgeable, and lying about what happened
6. His campaign manager Bill Stepien being knowledgeable, and lying about what happened

Pretty much every major player in his administration was a part of or knew what was happening, and lied about it. But Christie didn't? Sure. Okay. When a company closes a factory, they don't hire 20 armed security guards to guard the place, they pack up and leave......

Unless that company still owns that closed factory, otherwise they still employ the security guards to guard it.

Probably someone beset by antigovernment protestors who refused public notices not to trespass on unbudgeted and closed federal land. It was a completely unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars brought on by taxpayers unwilling to just *stay the hell away during the shutdown*.

The shutdown was not a punitive action by the White House. It was the mandatory result of Congress not meeting its budget deadline.

JANESVILLE, Wis. -The symbol of this town's economic past sits rusted and nearly abandoned. The Janesville General Motors plant is still patrolled by a single security guard, who comes up and directs you away from the factory that was once the economic center of this town.

This is a factory that hasn't made a car in 2009, but GM still owns the plant and is currently on "standby".

This is a more apt comparison compared to a factory that's shut down completely. The Government still owns these monuments even during the shutdown. So why are you getting on the Federal Government for doing the same thing with property that they own that GM did with their property in Wisconsin?

The ramps in question directly impacted the US-46 and US-1/9 approaches, bringing them to a near standstill, which in turn increased congestion on the I-95 and I-80 approaches. It's a loose application, but if a prosecutor wanted to bring those charges against someone, they certainly could.

Other bridges/tunnels were also open

..which cannot be accessed by truck.. which, yanno.. carries the majority of goods in this country

A stray dog has closed lanes on the GWB, did the Feds go after the dog?

When homicide charges are brought against one of these jokers, someone will roll on Christie.

Calm down, even Dick Wolf or Jack McCoy couldn't make homicide charges stick.  Way too much to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" for homicide.

Take a deep breath and see how things play out.

Not murder, could be criminally negligent homicide though if it's determined that they knew or should have known that the traffic would cause delayed response time for emergency vehicles.

That aside what kind of petty high school level crap was this? I mean seriously? We would have passed on such a lame stunt as beneath us for our senior prank.

OK, I'm gonna correct myself here.. reading the emails, it looks like I-95/I-80 traffic actually -lightened- thanks to lanes on the bridge itself being clear from not having all the would-be traffic from US-46/US-1/9

This happens here in Seattle on an almost daily basis.  Got a football game at the Clink?  2 lanes of the 520 bridge will be closed so they can do their "annual" (IE 6-7 times a year) analysis of the structural integrity.  Big concert or Mariners game going on?  Major construction on Mercer street, take the side streets.

5-6 times a year traffic up here is gridlocked because of this crap.  Then people complain about the traffic, the Left screams we need more money for transportation; the Right goes apoplectic over taxpayer money wasted and/or not enough roads built.  It's a vicious circle up here and it's disgusting.

I don't know, I want to be outraged over this... but okay so the governor of a state messed with a bridge during rush hour to punish a political rival who is mayor of the city connected to that bridge. That seems like normal political bad behavior that a human being might do... not the evil cartoonish politics like NSA spying on all Americans, GMO and hormones in our food supply that are killing us while a corrupted FDA does nothing, the systematic destruction of our freedoms, and outright destruction the country for the benefit of the wealthy and corporations. I've been really outraged about that stuff lately... that a politician messed with traffic is actually kinda comforting, because I can wrap my head around the motive.

Nah, just unfamiliar with NJ geography. Guess it was plumb crazy to think something about a traffic study was related to this story about a traffic study.

2014-01-09 12:58:32 AM

m00: I don't know, I want to be outraged over this... but okay so the governor of a state messed with a bridge during rush hour to punish a political rival who is mayor of the city connected to that bridge.

In the grand scheme of things, you're right.. the act/impact itself is relatively minor compared to many other things. It's the outright maliciousness and arrogance on display here that's getting to me. For example, the Iraq War would be an evil by orders of magnitude greater, but most of the motives behind it were honest; money, geopolitical stage-setting, etc.

This bridge thing is just dickery. Being a dick for the sake of being a dick, and that bothers me.

What exactly is that supposed to prove? Because to me it looks like Christie's staff willingly and purposely did this to fark with people. And the blacked-out parts only serve to make it even more suspicious.

Well, in one email there is approval for 60k to a mayor, per request, to do a traffic study, and the word retaliate only appears after the study was farked with. I like you. You often times seem reasonable. Please don't tell me you buy the "traffic study" nonsense. There's a lot of farked up shiat in those emails. For example. the traffic study they mention is in Springfield, which is nowhere near Fort Lee. The Port Authority seemed pissed people were conducting "traffic studies" without letting them know. The extensive redactions do not help their case.

Really, it just stinks of shiat all around.

There is no direct evidence that this was done specifically because the mayor didn't back Christie, no, not that I can see, but it kinda doesn't matter does it? It's pretty clear to me that they did it to get back at the mayor of Ft. Lee for -something- whether it be for not backing Christie or maybe looking at them sideways.

Point is you don't maliciously negatively impact the lives of thousands of people over a personal grudge.

I've been corrected on the Springfield thing. I still don't see the evidence for what people are saying about this, in those emails. Since they were using personal accounts, perhaps there was personal stuff included, and therefore redacted. I'm not making declarations of guilt until I see proof. It's the American way. There's damning in the sense that they DO show that:

-this was done intentionally and maliciously
-it was done as payback for -something-. The reason the not-backing-Christie is the bandied about speculation is because, at this point, it's the only thing coming close to making sense

The traffic jams, according to messages exchanged between Wildstein and Kelly, were a retaliatory move against Fort Lee's Democratic mayor, Mark Sokolich, who'd declined to endorse Christie's re-election bid.
According to the emails the  Record obtained, Kelly wrote to Wildstein on August 13 at 7:34 a.m., telling him, "Time to create some traffic problems in Fort Lee."
"Got it," Wildstein replied.
Kelly and Wildstein went back and forth until mid-September, when Wildstein wrote: "We are ready to do this. Can you have someone call the Mayor of Springfield and tell him that Gov has approved $60k for their traffic study."
In other words, a guy from the Port Authority is telling the governor's top aide what the governor has approved, and what he's approved will create a massive traffic jam, under the guise of "studying" traffic in a neighboring town.
Yeah. It's shady.

s2s2s2: Kinda spooky that that dude worried about hospice patients dying. I guess with the way we are speculating, Foye must have been in on it, too!

Foye was trying to get the lanes back open.

What that exchange showed was Foye, a Cuomo-appointed member of the PA board, observing the media backlash after the first day of lane closures (Monday, bear in mind, this whole deal went on a whole week), apparently didn't even know it was going to happen as procedures weren't followed, and issued an immediate reversal of the decision and ordered the lanes back open Tuesday morning. Then Christie's people basically said "we need to talk about this before you start doing reversals and for the extra cherry on top "there can be no public discourse"

Now, I'm still not saying Christie himself had anything to do with it.. there's still no evidence to that effect (I'm assuming that's what you mean by "speculation"), but that Christie's -people- at least were clearly doing malicious and underhanded things.. there's no "speculation" about that.

Now as for my personal opinion on whether Christie is involved, c'mon man.. are you saying this is going to be the first time in recent political history that it actually WAS just overzealous staffers?

LessO2: AeAe: LessO2: Witty_Retort: At least nobody died.

Ah-ah-ah. If what they did (the lane closures for no reason) was a
felony (And if calling in a bomb threat to do the same thing is a felony, I'm not sure why this isn't), then couldn't 'Felony Murder' rules apply? After all, if someone dies in the comission of your felony, EVEN IF IT'S A HEART ATTACK, you can be charged with murder, no? (In states that have Felony Murder laws, anyways).

If she's fired, it's pretty much an admission of guilt... If she resigns, there's plausible deniability. She can say she resigned to remove the distraction of this witch hunt and allow Christie to govern... or some such nonsense.

Christie's screwed though. This is going to be used as a cudgel against him, and rightfully so, should he run for president.

This basically shatters the illusion that Christie is a moderate, commonsense politician, and revels him for the petty bully he is.

Now that the president knows about what's happening with the NSA, maybe he can provide the missing evidence that is needed to implicate Christie.

Yes, this is all about Obama.

But since you guys brought up the point, may I point out that your defense of Christie is that he is guilty of what you have accused Obama of doing.  That's a fine claim, and sure to win the hearts and minds of the old rednecks whose primary votes determine the GOP nominee.

NJ crap doesn't play anywhere outside the northeast and a few other larger cities.  The GOP is going to choose some extreme nutjob with a tea party base, but who is repellent to a generous majority of general election voters.

I'd really be interested in knowing how shutting down bridge access lanes in Fort Lee (green pointer) would be necessary for a traffic study for Morris Avenue in Springfield Township (red pointer - 20 air miles away). Especially, I'd like someone to show this study. Gimme a name; gimme a link to the study.

...You know what happens in a traffic study?  Local authorities are contacted so they can get the word out, especially if it happens on key days when traffic is about to increase, like the first day of school.

I see that after apologizing for the incident today, Gov Christie fired DCS Bridget Kelley, "for lying to me".

So, what's the over-under that she or Wildstein will be first to turn State's Witness against him?

What's the bet on a tragic suicide of either of them in the next few days?
