I'm sure the Arizona demographic that keeps re-electing him feels he's worth every penny.

FTA:"Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (left) enlisted actor Steven Seagal (right) to train volunteer armed posse members to defend Phoenix-area schools against gunmen"

Good god. Are things so bad down there that you have to have armed posses guarding your schools now?

That's on top of the tens of millions in other legal fees and penalties Arpaio already has cost the good people of his county during his 22-year reign there. From The Republic

Wow, that Plato was really ahead of his time.

~~'The Most Expensive Sheriff in America' Is Getting More Expensive

Another multi-million-dollar bill comes due this year for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's reckless antics in Maricopa County, Arizona. And that's why more taxpayers may finally be asking: Who keeps voting for this guy, anyway?

That's what I'd like to know

As I understand it from people who live there, snowbirds who live there the requisite six months out of the year to be eligible to vote in their elections, and "Real 'Murican" idiots who think the constitution is something to wipe their ass with, unless it has to do with Duck Dynasty or owning a gun.

Old people.

Old people on Medicare who biatch about anybody else getting Obama care.

Old people who only live there in the winter.

Old people biatching about tipping servers at restaurants because they never tip that much back home.

Old people who still think White is Right and brown is criminal.

Old people who think every brown person is an illegal Mexican (I'm talking bout you Mom)

I lived in Arizona a long time but I dont' miss Sheriff Joe and his antics.

Senior citizens and fascist wingnuts who love "tough on crime" theatrics more than such piddling trifles as "not violating civil rights." A goodish portion of Arizona residents, in other words.

It's a circus that's costing Maricopa County serious bread.

I wish Arizona held their state elections in July. Screw all the snowbirds, come in-person and stand in line under a 115 degree sun if you want the right to choose how the state is run.

That's been obvious for years and years. The county doesn't save any money feeding inmates 15 cent meals and housing them in tents when they have to eat all the legal costs associated with the hardass's reign. There is absolutely nothing fiscally conservative about voting for Joe Arpiao.

I dunno guys...I kind of appreciate the irony of small government/spend less money Republican party forced to expand government and increase spending on some puffed up arrogant jerk with a badge.  what cost ideology, one wonders...?  every time a Republican says they believe in smaller government and less government spending, we can point to Sheriff Joe here and ask them how they would handle having this guy in their town...if nothing else, the mental gymnastics should be fun to watch.

The "small government" mantra from the right is bullshiat. Their stances on drugs, reproductive rights, gay marriage, the DoD, etc. put the lie to it over and over again.

When this argument was presented to a friend's father in Sun City West: "No, no, this how tax dollars should be spent! We are winning against crime!"

Generational change takes time. I think AZ and TX will vote very different in the next 10 years or so.

Subby, learn your titles. Sheriff Joe is not the "toughest sheriff in America." "Toughest sheriff in America" is an insulting title that actually implies the person holding it might not even be American at all. He could just be some tough foreign sheriff who happens to be inside America at that particular moment in time. He could be Italian or Japanese or god forgive me even French for all you know. And maybe at that one moment, because Sheriff Joe is sleeping or maybe taking a shotgun blast for one of his deputies that's gonna take him at least a few minutes to walk off, that foreign non-American sheriff becomes by default "the toughest sheriff in American." But he's not American, and don't you think for a minute he is, and his toughness is a fleeting a ultimately false thing.

See, what Sheriff Joe is, subby, is "America's Toughest Sheriff ©." As in, the toughest sheriff America has ever produced, which basically means there's God, there's Superman, and then there's Sheriff Joe. And you can bet your precious little lily-white ass that the moment Sheriff Joe wakes up, the very moment he shakes off that sting from the double barrels he just took in the chest to save that young deputy's life, he's gonna find that so-called "toughest sheriff in America" imposter and hand-carry his pansy ass back across the border where he came from. And then, just for kicks, he might come by to teach you a thing or two about respect. You like talking tough from behind a computer screen, subby? Sheriff Joe will teach you a thing or two about tough, and I'll warn now you to thank him for it when he does.

Yep. One dumbass kid calls a bomb threat into school to take a day off or something, and you get a bunch of armed, paranoid assholes running around the halls and grounds looking for something to shoot so they'll be a hero to the gun fetishists. Surely, nothing can go wrong with that.

A lot of folks who get good value for his services. That includes contractors who got him to roust the illegal workers they used to build housing development after housing development from Goodyear to Peoria, to the politicians who keep their tickets and investigations to a minimum, to the current owners of houses and businesses to keep their kickbacks useful. Well, that and the folks Joe has real dirt on. He is a vortex of corruption, but he's just the tip of the spear there.
