How much of this thread about the Holocaust will speak exclusively about the 6 million Jews that lost their lives, and not one mention of the 5-6 million ethnic Poles, Roma and Belarusians, and the tens and hundreds of thousands each of Serbs, Slavs, Jehovah Witnesses, African descent, Mentally Handicapped, Homosexuals, Bosnians, Albanians, Freemasons, and Slovenes persons that were murdered in the concentration camps and elsewhere with the same purpose of extermination?

Actually,

The article did not bring religeon, hertiage, ethnicity, nor did anyone in the thread.  But you did.

Why do you hate the Jews so much?

You know, that it happened to the Jews was scary enough.

The point of the matter is that the saying really is true:

They came for (fill in your blank for unpopular minority demographic), and I didn't speak up (repeat ad nauseum)
Then they came for my kind, and nobody was left to speak for me.

BEARS REPEATING:
The Nazi's came for everybody.
Even if you fit their genetic profile, if you didn't tout their ways/acceptance, they came for you, too.

I hope it's a better watch than Spielberg's efforts.

Yes, I mean Steven Spielberg. If your Oscar winning documentary has interviews that can be easily debunked by some internet-nazi nerd, you have problems regarding veracity.

This is a serious question and related to the video above: Is it possible to 'erase' tattoos ie, the ones the Nazis did on the Jews, by injecting some sort of chemical into the skin? I have never heard of this or anything remotely similiar and yet, there's a woman in that documentary who says that's what happened to hers. And she mentions that 'skin lampshade' thing as well, which I read was a rumour and never proven. Anyway, I found Spielberg's doc to be highly dubious in its accounting, which really surprised me.

"could happen again" ?  What Utopian  planet do you live on?  it's happening right now it's never stopped "happening".  Never Again is a nice slogan but that's all it is a slogan.. There are death camps all over this world right now that make the NAZIs look like boy scouts and what's the world doing about it? absolutely nothing, What are Farkers doing about it? absolutely nothing

Never Again, Always, and Forever my ass...

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm pretty sure that when Israelis said "never again" they meant "to us". Clearly if they meant that for everyone... the state of Israel wouldn't have allied itself with South Africa while it's racist, repressive white government rounded up black people and forced them to live in ghettos and placed all sorts of other barbaric restrictions, enforcing this system with murderous force. I'm just kidding. I'm sure those black south africans were somehow a threat to the existence of Israel and their actions were totally justified

Ugh. Now instead of ignoring him I have to look at his quote again, and you're trying to inflate his previous statement.
You get -5/10.

indarwinsshadow: Jekylman: indarwinsshadow: Some it is available from PBS

I just watched it, and again I think. How the hell can anyone, any human, do this to another human and still think of themselves as civilized?
Religion aside, what kind of monster could possibly think this was a good idea. How did they sleep with the fact they killed innocent people?

I'll never, ever, understand the mentality that went into the holocaust. It's the worst of humanity.

It's really fairly easy to successfully portray entire demographic groups as, by definition, not innocent and therefore deserving of whatever hateful thing you can do to them. And it takes only a few steps and a few public relations campaigns to institutionalize it.

I understand the indoctrination process. What I don't understand is how individuals co-operate on mass murder willingly. I get how one deranged individual takes it into their head to commit a crime, I don't get how you find a group of unrelated people buying into the idea that the solution is to torture/murder a group of people who have never personally harmed you.

It's not conditioning. It must be something else. Even simple indoctrination or education couldn't convince rational or apparently rational people to murder or allow to be murdered children, women and men who haven't done them physical harm.

I'm not naive. I'm just not wired to hate people enough to kill anyone in a premeditated fashion based on ideology.

I don't like a lot of people, based on personal experience. In my case, I don't like stupidity and willful ignorance. I can't imagine that as a criteria for rounding up lots of people and murdering them.

One has only to look at how WE treated Japanese people living in the US during WWII. The Japanese had been vilified, and lots of US citizens took out their hatred on the innocents living here. we even rounded them up into camps. We stopped short of genocide, which is the only thing different between 1940s USA and the Nazis.

Mudd's woman: LeroyBourne: I'll watch it, but I will only compare it to Salo.  If it's more disturbing than that I'll be impressed.

This may be a dumb question, but I'm curious as to why that film would be "Not Rated" as opposed to, well, "X" (NC17 nowadays?)?

The whole rating system is "voluntary." When the MPAA originally came up with the system, they trademarked/copyrighted the system and the ratings, except for some reason, the "X." Which is how you had porn films advertised as being "rated" "Triple X," and why the "NC-17" rating is copyrighted/trademarked.    Wikipedia entry on the topic (NSFW language).

Films made before 1968 were not rated under the system you see now, but were subject to the "Hays Code" for determining whether they were "moral." (Hence the hulabaloo over the closing scene of Gone With the Wind, or perhaps it was a bruhaha.)

The rating system, in part, was to deal with "censorship" issues (which the Hays Code pretty much was - a censorship system), and to avoid some kind of government rating body (though in light of the 1st Amendment, that would be tough to do, even with all the dilution of some of the other amendments).

Today, films or variants of films ("the director's cut") are released without running them through the MPAA rating system, but instead just contain disclaimers about disturbing scenes or suitability for children of a given age.

Lighten Up, Francis. You forgot non German POW's.
We all know it happened to this full extent- Time published tons of photographs from the soldiers, and all survivors were captioned.
However, given this is a documentary made(edited) from the films created by English and American soldiers of the time, chances are that some of the survivors will be shown to not necessarily be Jewish in descent.

There's some crazy footage out there from the European theatre. It's rumored that what finally killed Henry Ford was watching film of the concentration camps. He really liked those crazy Nazis (they gave him the highest medal available to non-Germans) but when he saw the footage he supposedly suffered a stroke from which he never recovered.

There's one clip of an American (non-commissioned officer, I think) who accepted the surrender of a Field Marshal or similar rank. The German saluted and handed over his baton. The American took the baton and cold-conked the German with it.

I wish they could put the footage up raw on Youtube. It'll never happen but it would have been nice to be able to suffer through it.

That brings up a good counter question. Do you think of any other group of persons other than Jews when the word Holocaust is used and what is the first thing you think of when someone mentions Jews?

There was a Pew Research Poll a few months ago that found that 73% of Jews when asked "What does it mean to be Jewish?" answered 'Remembering Holocaust'.

Where have we let the remembrance of this tragedy go when we forget all the loss that resulted because of it and one group comes to identify with it more than any other aspect of their heritage?

That's not so much a counter question as a desperate move to turn the thread to the subject YOU want to talk about. And/or moving the goal posts. It's an important lesson to be learned: wait until someone brings up a subject before you respond to it.

Don't waste your time. IQ here tried turning a crop circle thread into a politically motivated jerk-fest about the evils of corn (or something).
