LlamaGirl: Remind me again why people hate her so much?

Because she keeps being successful despite their hate. This, in turn, reminds them of the fact that their hate is basically impotent, which then makes them realize that most of what they do actually does have a negligible -- impotent, if you will -- effect on the world. This makes them hate her more, and the circle continues. Like a rage-filled Lion King, if you will.

She's pudgy and her work insists upon itself. That's the best I've been able to discern from the mongoloidal grunting.

"What are you, 15?" One of the better skits on SNL in recent memory. Come for the poorly sized rubber hand.

I don't hate her....I don't like her...I have no feelings of any sort about her...but her show is beyond farking stupid.  We had a free-preview weekend of HBO a couple weeks back and I decided I would sit and watch one of the mini-marathons they run of the show, because I had heard of it and the hype surrounding it. Other than the occasional flap jack titty shots that she provides (because, Hey, titties!), it was a non-funny, non-entertaining hour and a half or so that provided no useful purpose in life.  At that point I decided I didn't ever need to see or hear of Nena whateverhernameis again....

2014-01-08 10:14:42 AM
I've never seen how the show is classified as a comedy.  It has a few humorous moments, but it's not really funny.

My wife likes this show.

I laugh at it too.

Best club scene when she had the fish net shirt on dancing to icono pop.

We paused it an laughed our butts off.

No doubt.  This season so far has been really....uneven.

I gave the show a shot (girlfriend loves it) and thought it was tremendously juvenile. The mentality reminded me of a female centered Cruel Intentions...

She annoys me (this interview aside) because of her seeming insistance of her brilliance. We get it, you're not classically beautiful but so very brave and independent and daring to just put yourself out there, so casually nude and being so real (blah blah blah)...

If you removed the gratuitous nudity you'd have a cookie cutter girlfriends in the big city show.

That said, I don't hate her. I hate that she occupies time on my TV on occasion.

She is the female equivalent to Jack Black. No one wants to see him with his shirt off either...

Gave the show a try... came highly recommended by a friend that generally has better taste in entertainment...

I wouldn't say that I hate it, but reaaaaally NOT my cup of tea.

Characters seemed annoying, utterly unlikable brats trying to appear smarter and deeper than they really are... I guess the show turned better eventually, but I didn't really liked...

/As many others, not the Lena I was expecting.
//She cleans up nicely, however...

I'm still disappointed that I haven't found a place to steal the "Girls" porn parody. I really just want to see how it can distinguish itself from the actual show, which already has tits and screwing approximately every five minutes.

I liked season 1 a lot. Season 2, meh...

I hate her character. I dislike most the people on the show.

Annoying self centered brats who use people around them for the most part.

I think she gets hate because the character is based on her.

The people I know that hate Lena Dunham can't stop biatching about her weight. They also biatch about Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson.

But they also believe the Chris Farley was one of the funniest people of all time.

This is pretty much the whole point of the show.  It is a huge middle finger to the selfish hipster youth culture.

A lot of guys hate the show because the female characters openly discuss issues relating to sex and female sexuality and this makes guys feel uncomfortable and even intimidated at times.

It's billed as a comedy but the pilot episode didn't have the funny, so I never made it past that. I'm not sure how HBO did either.

Then I fail to see it framed as such or is not doing a good work framing the characters and putting them in such light.

Most characters on Trainspotting are utter assholes to say the least, but the movie isn't trying to portrait them as other thing. I don't seem to get that from "Girls".

As I said, I do not hate the show or have issues with Dunhams weight or image or the themes that it brings... the show is simply not for me.

LlamaGirl: I have seen a couple of episodes and was amused enough.

I actually had to think about this.  I think her show is barely watchable and insists upon its own brilliance, but lots of shows do that and I don't hate anybody involved.  I actually think it's a visceral reaction to the media actively pushing her on us.  Every interview with her is all "LOOK AT HOW GREAT SHE IS! WOW YOU'RE SO AMAZING!"  All the while, it's abundantly clear that Lena Dunham is not a genius, she doesn't have a unique voice, and she's not terribly interesting.  If she was any of those things, then her work would speak for itself, and her show would be better than it is.  I also find it ironic that hipsters who biatch about mediocrity in every other respect will turn around and praise it when its human form is another hipster.

2014-01-08 11:30:48 AM
I think the show has its moments, it's very self-aware that its characters are self-absorbed, vapid and don't have a lot to offer anyone else, that's kind of the whole point. But I find the nudity really off putting. It's not just that the nudity is completely gratuitous, which it is, or that the one chick looks like a pale, sloppy baby who probably smells like a musty old sandwich. It's that she's in charge of the show. She puts those scenes in there because SHE WANTS THEM THERE, like a trench coated flasher in a mall parking lot.

I'm sort of resentful that she made me look at that.

It's really a shame that so much of the hatred of this show is based on simple misogyny (and it absolutely is), because it naturally overwhelms any legitimate criticism. It's sort of given it a "get out of jail free" card. Not that that's Lena Dunham's fault, mind you. It's just how it is.

Because she shows her boobs all the time and apparently they just aren't up to the standards that the average Fark neckbeard living in his mother's basement has become accustomed to thanks to their airbrushed porn.

2014-01-08 11:38:29 AM
People dislike her because she's a rich girl that has parents in the industry. She proved one in such position can shiat out just about anything and find success with it. I'm not saying it's right to hate her for her luck in life, but there it is.

And if the show is supposed to be some massive parody of hipster culture, they do an uneven job of presenting it that way.

That said, I don't get the body hate. I mean I get it from a "lol she ain't skinny like da rest o dem tv broads" angle, but I think she's cute and would take her out for a fun evening then respectfully wish her a good night after walking her home.

2014-01-08 11:43:52 AM
i think lena is cute.  i'd bang the shiat out of her.  the show she has made is terrible and needs to be cancelled pretty hard.

Casey Anthony: A lot of guys hate the show because the female characters openly discuss issues relating to sex and female sexuality and this makes guys feel uncomfortable and even intimidated at times.

yeah.  that's it.  guys are uncomfortable around girls that talk about sex.  "rolls eyes".  no, hon, a lot of guys hate the show because it is freaking terrible.

gunga galunga: The people I know that hate Lena Dunham can't stop biatching about her weight. They also biatch about Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson.

I don't care about their weight.  i care because people keep telling me how funny they are, and THEY MOTHERfarkING ARE NOT.  Chris Farley was in fact fat.  He was also in fact ONE FUNNY MOTHERfarkER.  He could enter a room and have everyone in the room laughing and NEVER EVEN SPEAK.

Melissa McCarthy is finally showing people what box office poison looks like.  She is "OK" in a supporting, small role.  Why Hollywood thought she could carry feature films is a motherfarking mystery.

Rebel Wilson is farking useless and the antithesis of funny.  Yes, hon, you're a goddamn water buffalo.  It doesn't make you funny.

Lena Dunham will be foot note in television history after Girls finally gets cancelled because even HBO can only keep up the charade just so long. She will prove herself to be anything but genius as one project after another is met with "MEH".

But the flaws of upper-middle-class urban hipster youth just aren't that interesting to me, they're just...self-evident. There's nothing to really say about these people. There's nothing there. And if that's the point, it's not a very sharp one in my opinion.

If you want to watch a truly brilliant, dense, difficult show about flawed characters, watch Enlightened instead. It blows Girls out of the water. Naturally it was cancelled after 2 seasons.

I have not seen one criticism of her based on that, and I'm not sure it's factually accurate; her dad is a painter and her mom a photographer. Her mom apparently made one short film in 2006, and that's her only connection to "the industry." And, of course, lots of actors and filmmakers come from money or have parents in the industry, but I don't see anyone shiatting themselves over the likes of Keifer Sutherland, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, etc.

I'm older than their targeted demographic, but I was totally disappointed with the few episodes I watched of "Girls". Not sure what I was expecting, but I felt gross for watching it. I didn't like any of the characters and am sad that they could be viewed as a representation of young women. Not the kind of woman I'd want my daughter to become for sure.

They're obscenely wealthy people, and I guess if you wish to believe that wealthy Manhattan based artists have no connection to the entertainment industry, go for it.

I have no idea whether you can directly trace her success to any of it, I have little desire to analyze her career on that level. Also, if you think people don't take fat crackling shiats all over Paltrow and Barrymore, I'm not really sure what to say.

From Box Office Mojo:

6/28/13 The Heat  $159,582,188  (mixed reviews, most real people I spoke to either disliked it or missed it, has already been forgotten on the whole, and made money because Sandra.)
5/23/13 The Hangover Part III   $112,200,072 (she was at her best here - a small role.)
2/8/13 Identity Thief   $134,506,920 (this movie just outright sucked.  critics hated it.  people hated it.  it was one of the first "try to make McCarthy a star" films and it was a miserable failure.  People went to see it because Bridesmaids did well (and was vastly overrated) and the media was telling them McCarthy was SO DAMNED FUNNY".  THIS is the box office poison.)
12/21/12 This Is 40  $67,544,505 (was on the whole a flop.  no getting around it.)
5/13/11 Bridesmaids $169,106,725 (vastly overrated, McCarthy wasn't funny in it, failed to ignite a franchise.  Made money because marketing people fooled people into seeing it with "HANGOVER FOR GIRLS!" which the film is in no way.  This is the movie that had Hollywood trying to make McCarthy into a star, because the film made money and NO ONE KNOWS WHY (other than deceitful marketing)- "everyone in the film sucked, but McCarthy picked up an award, so let's start shoving her in people's faces!"
