whither_apophis: So they're making a "Big Trouble meets The Thing" movie? That'd be cool.

I always thought they should have made more "Big Trouble in...." movies. Not necessarily Chinamen-related but the further adventures of Jack Burton in other places, like Indiana Jones.

They're already getting Greenland,

How does a British company seeking Danish, Chinese and other investors for mining operations mean that China is "getting Greenland"?

Because China is bankrolling the operations, and they always bring in their own workers. But they have to operate under EU flags to make it legit, and the British are providing that cover. We worked on this issue for DOD, and had Greenlanders asking if they'd have to set up a brothel to handle the incoming workers.

FTA - Its helicopter evacuated 52 people from the vessel, which the state-run Global Times said had once again confirmed "China's national progress".

And there is the problem right there.  I can appreciate what they are trying to do but you just know they were embarrassed as crap that their icebreaker got stuck in the ice.  So the very Chinese thing to do is to not talk about that  and hail the helicopter ride of progress.

I wish them well in their pursuits but I don't think we need to worry just yet.

Satanic_Hamster: You mean the Chinese icebreaker that took two years to reach its destination?

That and the scale of their research there is a fraction of ours.

I love the CHINA'S DOIN' STUFF! alarmists.
They're a big, ambitious country. They do stuff. But nothing they do even compares to what we do.
Last year or two years ago it was OMG CHINA'S GOT AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER! That was an old Russian rustbucket and doesn't even compare to the oldest ones in our inventory.

Somebody should do a video of the stuck ice breakers, the helicopter "rescue" etc., set to "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama

The Chinese say we'll thank them when we aren't devoured by the shoggoths.
