(Deadspin)   Will Muschamp of Florida martyrs himself running the SEC's only clean football program, which not coincidentally is lying in the ditch and losing recruits by the luxury car-full   (deadspin.com ) divider line

My team is clean...

I read this the other day. It's a really good long-form article by a guy who actually went and lived in Gainesville for a few months this fall to cover the program and is well worth your time.

Muschamp comes across as well meaning but way out of his depth.

From one Dawg to a former Dawg, fark you, Mus.

Good read. I'm a UF grad although I went there in the pre-Spurrier years, when you couldn't give away your student tickets.

Muschamp has returned the team to the glory I remember from the Gators.

Maybe Mack Brown knew what he was doing, trying to keep Muschamp on his staff when programs first came calling?

Sure, he's the only one doing it the "right way." That's why they stink. It's because they dumped low character 4 and 5 star recruits and are only using high character 4 and 5 star recruits. It's not all because Muschamp decided to see if you could win games without an offense.

Florida is one of those programs that can't really lose enough to make me happy.

Guh, I hate you now.  I gave the article a try because of your recommendation; the author comes across as yet another thin-skinned douche who wanted to talk about himself as much as possible.  Well, lesson learned.  At the end of the article I still had no idea what to think of Muschamp; all I knew was what the author thought of Muschamp -- not to mention a whole bunch of the author's perspectives on Gainsville that I didn't give a flying fark about.  If the guy stuck to the facts the article would've been about half as long. . . and, most of said facts were stuff everyone could know just by checking box scores.

Meanwhile, blatantly corrupt football programs continue to win and bring in millions of dollars for their respective schools. Yay.

As a Ga. Southern fan, let me just say, HAHAHAHAHAHA.

UF when down, "We only take the top 1% of 1%."

UF when winning, "We didn't know he was a serial killer."

Yeah being the most ethical college football program is about like being the only gal in a brothel who won't do anal. It may make you feel better about yourself but no one else cares or will give you credit being better than the rest of them.

Its great.  To be. A 4-8er.  Gators can keep Will Zook..I mean Muschamp forever as far as this Nole is concerned.

I wish Gators fans would run that sleeper agent for UGA out of town, strap him onto a Delta IV rocket, and launch him.

Are you kidding??? Muschamp taking the UF job has been the best thing to happen for you guys in the Florida-Georgia rivalry.

FTA:  There wasn't one arrest while I was in Gainesville. There were no "issues."

Maybe because you were there during the season when the kids are in class or at practice constantly, and don't have the time or the energy to go out and get in trouble?

There have been 14 arrests in the three years since Muschamp took over.  That's just shy of Meyer's pace.

Also, the ending about "the last honest program in Gomorrah" is probably news to UGA, FSU, SC, UM, and others.  Muschamp's no dirtier than the rest, but he certainly isn't clean.  (Anybody rooting for a program that aspires to win titles who thinks their program is clean is delusional.)

The university president, who came from Utah, is also the one who brought Meyer in.  You'll pardon me for being a tad skeptical of the pearl-clutching about the state of things under Meyer.  They didn't want him gone because he was scummy.  They wanted him gone because he was a head case who apparently couldn't win anything without Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen to do the coaching for him while his rivals were all down.

The only reasons for why they haven't canned Muschamp yet are Foley's reputation -- the two hires he's made (Zook and Muschamp) have been disastrous so far, so he Muschamp needs to work out -- and not wanting to send the next coach into the buzzsaw that is their schedule next year.

What'll be hilarious is if one of the Lizards' regional rivals scoops up Muschamp for its DC and clubs them to death with it.  He may be too much of a meathead to make it as a head coach, but ol' Boom can put together a defense.

Muschamp is a terrible HC and an even worse recruiter. Which will only get worse now that they have started losing and one of their main rivals has won a NC. The fact that the rival is also in-state just makes things that much worse. Most kids would rather compete for National or Conference titles than be the cleanest program in college.

If you can't recruit the best players in Florida, or the South East, like Spurrier and Myer could do, then you won't ever win in the SEC or against teams like Miami, Georgia, or Florida State. Especially if you're a marganial HC to begin with. As we've seen more of Myer's recruits graduate or leave the program we've also seen the Gators record get worse and worse. That's no coincidence.

Until they get rid of Muschamp the Gators will suck a little more each year until they bottom out (much like where they're at right now).

What is this article?  It seemed to simply be one person's recollection of this season's games and their following press conferences, to be described in the most purple way possible.  It's over 6,000 words and I'm not exactly sure what it is saying.

Muschamp is done at the end of 2014.

Jon Gruden will be the next coach of the Gators. Fans and boosters will rejoice.

As a Seminole, that would be glorious.  Jon Gruden is possibly the most overrated coach in the history of football.  If you want a guy with a great scowl who can spit out catchphrases all day, he's great.  And he'll be happy to tell you all about how many hours he puts in.  But without a Monte Kiffin defense to bail out his mediocre offenses, he won't last two seasons in the SEC.  And that's not even getting into how poor his track record is for developing young talent, especially quarterbacks.  He didn't have the patience for 28 year old quarterbacks, what the hell would he do with an 18 year old.

He's not a bad coach, but I don't think Gruden has the patience for the college game.  Coaching 19-year-olds is different from coaching 27-year-olds.   Some guys make sense in the NFL, some make sense in college.  Gruden is in the former group.

I'm not even sure he's ever going to coach again, honestly.  I think he actually likes the commentator gig.

My best guess was that Charlie Strong would wait out Muschamp and eventually take the UF gig.  The nightmare scenario would've been Strong at UF and Jimbo going to Texas.  Instead, UF holds onto Boom, Strong goes to Texas, and Jimbo stays.  Win, win, win if you're a 'Noles fan.

Well, yeah. The article was about how an outsider would view the insular community. That was the point. If it's not your particular taste, fine, but don't hate a well written article because it succeeded in what it was trying to do.

Fifty Shades of Grey

succeeded in what it was trying to do.  That doesn't make it good writing, much less something people ought to read.  TheMephis sums it up perfectly:

TheMephis: It seemed to simply be one person's recollection of this season's games and their following press conferences, to be described in the most purple way possible. It's over 6,000 words and I'm not exactly sure what it is saying.

. . . though I'd amend that to say I'm pretty sure I know what it's saying, which is basically a "reporter" thinking it's OK to be paid to behave like just another fan for an entire season as long as you write a mini-memoir about it afterwards.  The whole thing was about as productive as reading an FSU fan blog.

Also, yeah, I don't necessarily hate the article.  It's too amateurish, pointless and utterly forgettable to be offensive.  The anger stems from the fact that there's most definitely something else out there that was far more deserving of our time, and you directed us to this PoS instead.
