While radiation levels were substantially above normal, unit leader Dieter Jonas says no one was in danger during Tuesday's incident.

Which made him happy as a little girl!

Lets see, Iodine 131 has a half life of 8 days.

Isolating the load for a week or two is a reasonable measure. Of course, isolating the load at the hospital for a month might have been more sensible. Perhaps they already did, but it's so many diapers that didn't help.

Anyhow, iodine tabs are standard for reactor breaches now.

When my grandpa was dying of bone cancer the oncologists gave his gold digging wife a pair of hazmat gloves and face masks and told her if he dribbled on the floor while peeling she needed to use them the clean up before it ate through the floor.

This happens with cat poop..if the cat has a hyperactive thyroid, the vet will prescribe radioactive iodine to fix the problem. However, that cat's poop is now radioactive for a few days and the cat must stay at the vets for a few days (expensive!)  until the radiation from the treatment dies down.

The problem is that after 9/11 many of the more scardey-cat paranoid municipalities installed sensitive radiation detectors in their disposal site and will shut down their facilities for inspection if they trigger,

They then literally wade through the trash looking for the source and identify the dumper of the trash by such items as discarded envelopes.
And they then bill the owner 1000's for the costs.

We get a lot of radiation alarms here at the incinerator due to the same medical issues. Not a big deal.

I sell I-131 for a living. It's used routinely in diagnosing and eliminating thyroid cancer. This is a common problem when traveling just after therapy as diapers are required to ensure that urine leakage does not spread the low level contamination.

2014-01-08 03:33:29 PM
Aw heck, I was hoping it was Russian diplomats wearing adult diapers.
