The Great lakes aren't frozen over (yet). That's cloud cover building over the relatively warm lakes, leading to some impressive lake-effect snows downwind. Here's a better pic:

Meh.
Looks like winter.
Crank up the snowmobile! We're going for a ride before the plows start clearing.

It gets above freezing tomorrow. And then after Thursday it won't go below freezing for a week. In January.

At least now we have named storms.  That means that years from now we can actually remember these winter storms.

common sense is an oxymoron: The Great lakes aren't frozen over (yet). That's cloud cover building over the relatively warm lakes, leading to some impressive lake-effect snows downwind.

Came to say this.  The lakes take a LONG time to freeze, because they hold so much energy from the summer.  On the flip side of that, they take a long time to warm up in the spring, and so they have the interesting effect of "delaying" the onset of seasons near the lakes.

Not quite. Temps on Mars can be as high as 35 C and as low as -90 C. Also, its a terrible idea to compare two planets that are completely different.

They moderate summers quite nicely, if memory serves.

I lived on Lake for over 3 years. I saw it every year in Oct-Dec before the major ice came in. It was nuts. I would walk to beach and watch. It was pretty awesome.

I thought I had some balls when I was cliff jumping in to Superior in Nov 2009 and again in April 2010 when water temp was 34 degrees. Those people though, are another breed.

It honestly took an entire day. My friends and I wanted to be the last in the Lake jumping in 2009 and first in in 2010. In 2010 where we were jumping there were still ice chunks in the water, but not where we were jumping. They were 20 yards away. I did one jump. It was so hard to swim 15 feet back to the rock face to climb out. Your whole body contracts and makes swimming such a short distance almost impossible. I never did it again. My skin was purple for quite some time coming out. We had blankets prepped and everything but those were useless.

It was fun. I'm glad I didn't get swimmer's heart attack/stroke. Now I only do in the summer time when I am visiting family up there. Here is a random photo where we went jumping, but it's from Google.

Last one. I'll show face this time. Here I am about 100 yards off the shore snow shoeing on Superior. It's the same place where Kid Rock filmed his video for Born Free. He loves his beaches.
