It really just looks like an American who was less than half-prepared for Russian douchebags on the train.

If you have to use a riot shield and two pimps to throw up your impromptu beggar's tour guide megaphone bullsh*t, you might be doing it wrong.  He just wanted those brutal sad f*cks to keep moving.

Then again, Russia.  You can be civilized or you can be Russia.  Mere flirtation with either notion confuses and aggravates the Rest.  We'll wait.  Russia looks lovely.

Every time I did something stupid driving (wrong side driving right-hand turns can be problematic) in the UK, I'd just roll down the window and say, "I'm sorry. I'm stupid; I'm an American."

Woman was a dick.
Douchebag was a bigger dick for hitting her, while her back was turned, then sitting there looking smug and self-righteous.

Honestly, this guy is how the rest of the world see you, America. His attitude, his demeanor, and his actions are all representative of you as a nation and your foreign policy. Lashing out is not the answer to every grievance you have no matter how justified you think it is. Then complaining that you get hit back? Pfft. You people shoot each other for less than that.

That said, I would have thought that turning a whiny dick who hits your wife was perfectly acceptable behaviour for Fark, The Russian biatchslap is stunningly effective to bullies and they live to experience the shame of whining like a girl. Great macho takedown with no serious harm done, I thought.

/I don't condone the woman with the phone but there are better ways to handle the situation.

Ummm. No. I'm a pretty laid back, welcoming, personable kind of guy. Met a few while backpacking in Australia and enjoyed their company.

Normally it would go like:

American: "Me?  I'm an American, on my way to Prague to meet some friends there.  How about you?"
Me: "Hi. I'm from England. Where in the U.S. are you from? Are you enjoying Europe? Where else have you been?"

This guy was being a dick.
No matter if someone else was being a dick, too. The lashing out then biatching about being hit back... you're a dick. I'm not going to be nice to you if you are a dick.
I was just pointing out how his actions were analogous to U.S. foreign policy in that you like to lash out at any grievance, especially when you think there's no retaliation, then whine like a girl when you get slapped back.
Also it was an observational comment on elements of your society. Fortunately, this happened in Russia, if this was the U.S. there's a strong likelihood of at least one of these people being shot and killed. See the piece on the old man and the dog piss.
I generally LIKE Americans. But Yanks can be dicks.

I'm so glad you have an accurate understanding of our culture and way of life.

There's less violent crime per capita in the US than in the UK. Fortunately bullet wounds are easier to treat than knife wounds.

Normally it would go like it is going right now, which was what I was saying. Always with the foreign policy, as if tying that to a rude or out-of-sorts tourist is relevant or even remotely insightful.  Backpackers are even more mouthy, presumptuous, and annoying than uptight Americans who don't know not to spank grifters on Russian trains.

This should explain why hostels are things I've been avoiding for decades.

I don't even know if I can be arsed to respond. How many people were shot in the U.S. in the last week? A few? Dozens? Likely hundreds. How many stabbings in the U.K? Maybe dozens. If that.

Back in the late 90's, one of your farking drunk Brit yobs was in town to do a show with the Black Watch in Austin,Texas.

I dunno how many people were shot in the US last week, but I can take a wild guess that it was fewer than 1 within 100  60 miles of where I live.  I could be wrong.  Maybe someone got shot near me?  I dunno.  We average 1-2 murders per year in my town.  I feel pretty farking safe.

Crime rates vary more by neighborhood than by country.   There's probably a few bad neighborhoods in the UK.  I know there are some bad ones in the US.  I stay out of them.

I imagined you saying all of that with a British accent.  It sounded funny.   Yeah, us Yanks can be dicks especially when a lot of us aren't cool with that term.  Newsflash, people from anywhere can be dicks.   We're dicks, you're dicks, but mostly most of us aren't actually dicks. Everyone I've ever met from the UK has been perfectly polite and did not live up to the stereotypes perpetrated by the BBC.  There was not one Mrs. Bucket or Dennis Watts or Mr. Humphries and not even a Maggie Thatcher, the Queen or Winston Churchill in the bunch.  There were all sort of miserably average,

Canadians and Mexicans are pretty much the same too.  They're mostly nice people.  If you look hard enough you'll find a few bad seeds and unfortunately those few bad seeds stand out more than the rest and we elect them into office as well.  Sorry about that.  Well, we don't elect Canadians and Mexicans into Congress, but we have plenty of ignorant corrupt Americans to fill those jobs.

The key metric here is *per capita*. The UK is about a fifth the size of the US (by population). Taking this into account, and looking at the various ways that both countries report "violent crime" you get that the UK experiences at least twice as many violent crimes as the US, per capita.

This means that if you're going about your daily life in the UK, you're about twice as likely to be physically injured or manhandled in a criminal fashion than if you life your daily life in the US. This includes all violent crime, not just gun violence.

Predictably, the US has higher gun violence rates than the UK because we permit people to possess guns.
