Yeah but almost every time the benefits were extended in the past, a Republican was President.  So it was OK.

Because Obama herp-a-derp socialisms.

You know, people always say that you should put politics aside when you interact with friends and family, and that there are good people on all sides of the political spectrum, but I have a very hard time withholding moral judgment from people who have this view of poor and unemployed people. It's pretty disgusting.

We need to stop giving money to unemployed and poor people because they'll just go waste it on food for their families. Everyone knows it is far more economically efficient to just give subsidies to farms directly and let people starve.

535 Lazy Americans still getting paid no matter what.

Since this is a cloture vote, I predict narrow passage, with those GOP senators up for re-election and facing a Tea Party challenger in the primary voting against is, and those up for re-election but safe voting for it, just enough so that all the Democrats vote for it, and we end up at 60 votes.

Then for the real vote, nearly every Senator, except those GOP ones with presidential aspiration, votes for it.

We're moving to this thread now?  ok.  uh, spoiler.  It passed the preliminary vote.

Yet another no-brainer issue that is only an issue because of conservative over-representation in government. Surprise, surprise.

So very much this.  If you are in favor of kicking people out to freeze or starve in the streets, you are scum, end of story.  Same thing regarding healthcare; if you want to see people dying of preventable/curable conditions, you are a vile bastard and I have nothing to say to you.  End of story.

I've never quite understood why the idiot politicians in this country can flush trillions of dollars down the tubes on things such as the Irag War, and this is accepted (and even lauded by some)...yet any mention of using even the smallest fraction of these funds to help the less fortunate in this country results in ZOMFG brain aneurism conniptions.

We should find new solutions to the "war on poverty". But we shouldn't do that unless the Republicans give up their wars against drugs, women, gays, Obamacare, and intelligence.

And wtf McCain?  Senate procedure is now dictatorial?

Is he up for re-election?

because bankruptcy will lift all boats in a service/consumer spending economy still coming out of a housing bubble!

The real vote will be in the House.  They might decide not to bring it to a vote while waxing patriotic about how  not helping people is the best way to help them or they will fully fund three a three month extension if we repeal Obamacare.

Susan Collins will support it.  Her Teahadist challenger in Maine recently went on record saying that his spousal abuse conviction (challenged all the way to the Maine Supreme Court) proves he has the proper integrity to fight for what's right.  He also called one of the Maine Congressmen a "closet homo" on Twitter, so I think she's going to be okay in the primary.

$100 Billion of Corporate Welfare

One surprising category of spending that turns up repeatedly in the expenditures of many government agencies is "Applied R&D". Here, rather than funding basic science research as a public good from which general applications might be produced by businesses, the U.S. government is instead providing funding directly to corporations for the purpose of developing specific products and services, even if they don't make any real business sense.

Which they don't. Because if they made any real business sense, corporations are more than capable of developing them on their own, without any government prompting or assistance.

That is why they first villainize and then dehumanize the unemployed before they do.  Then they whine how the government wants to take their money and give it to the lazy treacherous scum as a reason to oppose extending benefits.  Unless they actually speak to an unemployed person.  Then rather than call them lazy, they shed crocodile tears about how the awful economy with no jobs has betrayed the unemployed person.  In both contradictory messages though they fault Obama of course.  Obama is creating a welfare state with unemployment checks despite an abundance of jobs while he is destroying jobs making it harder for the unemployed to get work.

This is a sort of job program. If the money dries up, then landlords don't get paid. Other bills do not get paid. That hits the economy and more jobs are lost. So, unemployment is a job program.
