I look forward to the Winter Olympics.  I do not look forward to NBC.

When the luge is on, SHOW ME THE FARKING LUGE!!!!  Don't show me the 2 Americans and the 3 eventual medal winners, interspersed with feel-good stories about 3-legged puppies with cancer and how they taught an athlete to persevere.

How am I supposed to feel thrilled, disappointed, hopeful, etc. about the luge competition if I don't see enough of it to gain any context?

How long does NBC have control of the Olympics coverage?  Why isn't it rotated around like the Super Bowl?  Their coverage of the last summer games were an embarrassment, especially how they covered the opening ceremonies.

A few years ago-probably the 06 games- I had the chance to watch them on Canadian TV. Amazing, they actually showed SPORTS, the way Jim McKay and ABC used to.

Now you can watch for 2 hours and see exactly 4 minutes of events. Thank god for DVRs.

NBC, if you are listening. Please keep 2/3 of the "producers" you are sending to Russia home, and substitute more cameramen in their place.

NBC's televised main prime-time network coverage sucks, but I have to give them props for:

* The full unedited streaming events (although requires you have cable and they don't do the marquee prime-time events)

* CNBC/MSNBC all the hockeys and all the curling

And however bad you think NBC is, think back to when CBS had it

1.  World Cup
2. World Championships
3. Olympics

Ratio of action to filler has gone way done.  And the ABC segments ("Up Close and Personal") weren't the unadulterated schmaltz that NBC puts on.  Roone Arledge imposed a hard limit (2:30) on them, too.

Okay, I guess you know more about it than me. My recollection from like the '84 games were incessant cutaways to up close and personal.

If you, me, and everyone else hates it, why do they do it? It certainly can't be any cheaper to pre-produce hundreds of vignettes in different athletes' hometowns than it would be to just keep showing the events they are already filming. What is the rationale?

I've already decided to watch the online streams and basically ignore the TV coverage unless it's something worth watching (meaning an American medal). It's better coverage than the TV coverage and I can see everything instead of just what NBC wants us to see.

I don't preen to care about any of them, though. Curling is a fun distraction (like darts) so I'll watch it of it's on. I basically don't want to see a million posts on my Facebook feed about ice skating/ice dancing/etc

Sing it, brother! That very scenario is why I don't watch the Olympics any more on American television - I actually want to watch the athletes, all of the athletes, compete in a given sport. Instead, I get brutally edited nationalistic footage interspersed with the broadcaster's lame attempt at justifying their existence through innumerable ads, human interest stories, and jingoistic bullshiat.

I just want to watch them compete. How difficult is that?

How to win the Downhill

Method A
 * Stay in the tuck all the way down
 * Keep your skis smooth and in contact with the snow at all times
 * Keep your upper body as still and quiet as possible
 * Choose the optimum course down the hill
 * Avoid sharp turns and the need to overcorrect

Method B
 * Be Franz Klammer

Same reason that American Idol and it's ilk focus on the contestants sob stories, momma with diabetes cause she's a fat fark, daddy done got laid off'n the plant, m'parents were both meth addicts but I'm risin' above, ya'll. People clearly love that shiat. And there's, sadly, enough of them that it dictates the bullshiat backstory moments. When you have a country full of lessers, it makes them feel better to see that a handful of winners came from similar circumstances. Toss the losers a crumb or two. It's bullshiat, but that's how it goes.
