Armond White is the personification of YouTube comments.

Oh, that man is quite a coont.

Armond White is such a contrarian, self-aggrandizing piece of sh*t that RottenTomatoes dropped him.  And they still carry TONS of obscure asshat blog reviews.

As soon as I read the headline I knew it was Armond White.

The one you're thinking of is mostly gray with blotches of green and brown, depending on the flesh consumption by various microbes and worms.

This guy has always intrigued me.  I don't think he is a "troll", as many people have said.  I want to believe he's just a misunderstood guy with interestingly unpopular opinions (something I love to read).  I've read and agree with many of his reviews, in fact.

Honestly I think the truth is far more banal:  he is a really, really outspoken guy who has poor taste in movies.

Occam's Razor - as we sit here talking about his sorry ass, he is getting more known, which is the goal in the post-talent horroscape of entertainment in the 21st century, and that is a lot more likely than him actually having diametrically opposed viewpoints to the entire industry as a whole.

Armond White is brilliant... he's figured how to be a griefer and make a career out of it,

He's also a dick, and it really is something only a sociopath could genuinely appreciate or aspire to, but it's still genius.

Steve McQueen's a good filmmaker. "Hunger" and "Shame" were both excellent.

Also, puberty was very kind to Michael Fassbinder.

"This isn't the first time White, a controversial critic who often hates the movies everybody else loves and panned "12 Years a Slave," has thrown a public fit at the annual gala meant to celebrate film."

So basically the guy's a troll, why do they bother paying attention to him?

Whatever he is, his reviews are like a portal into Bizarro world, and I'm sort of glad this vortex into another dimension exists.

Yeah, now that Ebert's dead (spoilers) and every shmuck with an internet connection is a movie critic, being a movie critic is even more lame than it was before. So they guy's an intentional troll to get people to talk about him which we apparently are.

Other than Ebert and Roeper (through proximity to Ebert), White is the only movie critic I know by name. Thats disturbing yet totally unsurprising.

Having read TFA, I realized I'd never heard of this guy, so I went to Rotten Tomatoes to check out his reviews.  (thanks by the way for whoever up-thread explained why there were no reviews of his from recent movies).  I found this gem in his review summaries:

Jackass 3D Steve O's Super Cocktail Bungee routine in a feces-filled port-a-john utilizes distance and trajectory in a way that recalls the great waterslide joke in Norbit (and should help rehabilitate that wonderful film's unfair reputation)."

But to be that far wrong EVERY TIME? Occam's Razor says that he gets the buzz from other critics
and writes the opposite. He's just writing a contrarian review every time. You yourself could easily walk into an Oscar bait movie and trash it, and walk into a B movie and praise it. It really is that simple.

I like Scott Tobias, Nathan Rabin, and Tasha Robinson at The Dissolve (formerly of the AV Club); AO Scott at The New York Times is generally good; Richard Brody at The New Yorker is interesting even when I think he's off; and Film Crit Hulk is solid story analyst if you can look past the ALL CAPS gimmick.

FTA: "Redford told a story about how he made a New York stage appearance many years ago in a play he didn't name, other than to say the production wasn't good, despite what the director kept telling the cast. After it opened, he read a review that said "what a sorry excuse for an actor he was." That line drew a big laugh from the crowd."

That's your epitaph, Armond White. Anonymous idiot to serve as a softball punchline at an awards ceremony. While you were busy heckling, you just got served, Ebenezer Scrooge Christmas Carol style. Mommy Fortuna from Last Unicorn had a better sense of how to achieve immortality.

Armond White is fantastic.  I don't often agree with him, but his knowledge of movies and application of that to his reviews is an interesting, refreshing perspective on film.  fark you if you can't handle some educated guy criticizing a film you like. (I'm not condoning his heckling however.)

2014-01-07 12:32:00 PM
He's a bizarre guy who often makes extremely insightful observations in between odd tangents and an obtuse writing style. No excuse for heckling, though.

2014-01-07 12:35:31 PM
Rotten Tomatoes lists him as agreeing with the "popular consensus" of professional critics 52% of the time.  So he's not a full-time contrarian.  He just picks times to stand out, and the more out-of-line he is with the critic community, the more outspoken and asshole-ish he gets about it.

2014-01-07 12:38:05 PM
Armond White is killer.

I know I am probably feeding a troll, but I am going to go out on a limb on the off chance you realky ARE that pants on head stupid.

It is not because he hates A movie or even SOME movies people don't like that he is rightfully derided as worthless as a critic. It is because he has a damn near 100% record of hating what is universally praised/ loving what is universally panned. That kind of record only comes from intentionally doing so for attention or some form of insanity.

Even IF (and that is a long shot) those are his actual opinions, for him to somehow feel he is "right" and the entire rest of the world is "wrong" EVERY time shows a great deal of insanity. Either way he is a horrible critic and a "fantastic" attention whore at best.
